Week 8 Home Activities
YES! My Child LISTENS!
Like a muscle, your child's listening skills need constant exercise in order to grow stronger. Kindermusik Our Time classes give your @20 - 40 opportunities for your child to "exercise" and develop listening skills each week as we listen to “Hellos,” “Lap Bounce multiple ways,” “Listen to specific sounds (like the horse sounds we heard this week),” “Listen to many various instrumental sounds,” “Listen to directions and musical cues as we dance,” “Listen to encouragement from you to participate and share ideas,” Listen to various styles of recorded and live music and singing,” and of course “Listen to ideas from other parents and students,” and much more . . .
What is Listening? It is an ability to focus attention on what one hears. Becoming a “listener” will help your child:
- Learn more quickly and effectively for later academic success
- Heed danger signals
- Get along better with you and other adults and
- Make better friends.
There are many things you can do to help your child develop listening skills.
- Model listening skill: chances are your child will learn good listening skills from you!
- Ask your child "listening" questions, so your child's neural network will learn to listen.

HOME ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS
1) Our Home Play Theme : LISTENING SKILL FUN
- Make a homemade shaker as suggested on P.24 of your Home Activity Book. While you’re at it, make several shakers and help your child explore the different sounds each shaker makes, depending on the container and what you put in it.
- Make copies of the animal pages in your Watch Me story book. Post the pictures in various places throughout your home. As you read or listen to the story on your Home CD encourage your child to find the matching picture. For example, if you read the cat page, creep through the house until you find the picture of the cat.
- Find all the tracks on your Home CDs that have sounds to listen to like the elephant, cat, ascending pitches, horse sounds, etc. Find pictures in magazines or download images from the internet that match the sounds. After you and your child listen to a sound, ask your child to point to the picture that matches the sound.
- If you haven’t done so already, take a few moments to read the descriptions of the learning styles from last week’s class.
- Make your STORYBOOK: ”Watch Me!” a LISTENING BOOK: Make the sound of the animal or describe the animal and have your child “guess” what they are hearing.
- Go online to listen and see a variety of frogs "croaking.
