NEWSLETTER - June 2014

This is the eighth of a regular ‘monthly’ newsletter published to club members providing summary key updates from the club.

All official announcements will still be made available as ever on the club website: http://www.hedgeendrunningclub.com/index.html

May Member of the Month

Ali Morant is the May member of the month. This is for completing her first marathon, for her run in the Netley 10K, for being the Female Championship winner at Netley parkrun back in March, and for doing a lot of the organising for the barbecue after the club championships at Netley.

HRRL Review

It seems a long time ago when on the 7th of September last year, 15 members made the journey to Overton in the north of the county to run in a 5-mile race, our first ever Hampshire Road Race League event. Since then, there have been another 5 miler, four 10K's, four 10 milers and two half marathons to make up the twelve races in the League.

We entered one team in each of the four Divisions - the Men's A & B and the Ladies A & B. The first four men home make up the A team and the second four make up the B team. For the Ladies, it's the first three in the A team and the second three in the B team. That first race at Overton was the only time that we didn't have four complete teams.... something that most other clubs in the league haven't been able to achieve. Since then, entry numbers have gradually increased so that by the last race of the season, the D-Day 10K in June, Stubbington were the only club that had more entrants than Hedge End Running Club.

This fantastic participation level and our distinctive vests have certainly caused us to be noticed. There has been great feedback from the other club runners and a number of complimentary emails from other clubs and the HRRL committee.

In our debut season, we had to start at the bottom which meant going into Division 3 in the A Leagues and Division 2 in the B Leagues. It's a fantastic achievement that all four teams have been promoted.... as winners of the Ladies A Division 3, winners of the Ladies B Division 2, winners of the Men's A Division 3 and runners up of the Men's B Division 2.

Congratulations and well done to every single HERC member that participated in any of this season's races! Let's also not forget the wonderful support we've received from non-running members, friends and family who've come along to cheer us on. Their support makes a big difference and is certainly noticed by the other clubs. Thank you all very much for such a great start in the league.

Wyvern 10K Marshalls

The club will host the Wyvern 10K on the 13th July.  Members will be encouraged to provide assistance on the day, rather than running.

Race Leagues (HRRL,SXCL & RR10)

The club is entered into two leagues throughout the next few months “The Hampshire Road Race League” (HRRL), and the RR10.

The HRRL is completed across various road race events and points are scored by the club and individually.  You enter any of the races as normal and by registering as a Hedgie runner you will automatically be part of the team depending on finishing position.

The RR10 league is a series of races organised by running clubs in south-west Hampshire for their members. The races are held on Wednesday evenings during the spring and summer. Entry is free. All of the races are 4-5 miles off-road. The standard of runners varies from 5-minute milers to 12+ minute milers so, however fast you are, there will always be someone to run with.

HRRL 2014/15

There will be no change to the HRRL races for the 2014/15 season which kicks off again with the Overton 5-Mile race at 2.00pm on Sunday the 7th of September. It will certainly be a tougher challenge next season, however based on this year's performances, (our Ladies A would have been promoted to Division 1 if we'd already been in Division 2) we have certainly quickly established ourselves as a credible, competitive club and can be full of confidence for the future.

The HRRL prize giving is held at the first race of the season, so let's try and get as many entrants and supporters along to Overton to see us pick up our four trophies!

Mile of Miles Relay (2nd July 2014)

HERC has been allocated 3 teams and has asked to be allowed to enter a 4th. There are 10 runners per team, we therefore have places for between 30-40 runners to take part.  We will also be operating a reserve list in the event runners become injured or are unable to attend.  Register your interest on the Facebook event.
