It seems a long time ago when on the 7th of September last year, 15 members made the journey to Overton in the north of the county to run in a 5-mile race, our first ever Hampshire Road Race League event. Since then, there have been another 5 miler, four 10K's, four 10 milers and two half marathons to make up the twelve races in the League.
We entered one team in each of the four Divisions - the Men's A & B and the Ladies A & B. The first four men home make up the A team and the second four make up the B team. For the Ladies, it's the first three in the A team and the second three in the B team. That first race at Overton was the only time that we didn't have four complete teams.... something that most other clubs in the league haven't been able to achieve. Since then, entry numbers have gradually increased so that by the last race of the season, the D-Day 10K in June, Stubbington were the only club that had more entrants than Hedge End Running Club.
This fantastic participation level and our distinctive vests have certainly caused us to be noticed. There has been great feedback from the other club runners and a number of complimentary emails from other clubs and the HRRL committee.
In our debut season, we had to start at the bottom which meant going into Division 3 in the A Leagues and Division 2 in the B Leagues. It's a fantastic achievement that all four teams have been promoted.... as winners of the Ladies A Division 3, winners of the Ladies B Division 2, winners of the Men's A Division 3 and runners up of the Men's B Division 2.
Congratulations and well done to every single HERC member that participated in any of this season's races! Let's also not forget the wonderful support we've received from non-running members, friends and family who've come along to cheer us on. Their support makes a big difference and is certainly noticed by the other clubs. Thank you all very much for such a great start in the league.
