Star Blazers Shotcast!

June 15, 2014

To save the human race from the evil Gamilons, humans convert and a 250 year-old Japanese battleship into a space battleship, so they can take the fight to the enemy and get what they need to save the Earth. How can you NOT love that premise?!? And love I did! In the early 80s, I fell in love with this imported Japanese cartoon that had the coolest spaceship since the Millennium Falcon (sorry Enterprise), a cast of characters you really got to know and love, and drama not found in its animated American counterparts.

Adapted from the Space Battleship Yamato Anime, Star Blazers paved the way for other Japanese Anime properties to make their way to American shores; Voltron, Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman), Robotech (Macross), Tranzor Z (Mazinger Z), and many, many others. Often considered more on the mature side (for its overall tone rather than content), Star Blazers gave us characters we could be invested in, and then have bad things happen to ... up to and including dying! At a time when Cobra troopers would jump out of their tanks before it blew up, this was an incredible departure.

And many others I am sure. You can also find it for purchase on sites like Amazon and Ebay.
