As part of earning their Eagle Scout, scout must first complete a the 13 required merit badges, plus 10 additional badges.  Merit badges are not typically earned as part of regular troop activities; although some skills that are necessary as part of a scout’s rank advancement may be applied to some badge requirements.   Parents are encouraged to help their scout earn badges.

Before starting a merit badge, the Scout needs to speak with the Scoutmaster about their interest in working on a particular merit badge.  While the Scoutmaster’s signature on the merit badge application (aka the “Blue Card”) is not required for a Scout to begin, they must have that signature before they can receive their merit badge, even if they finished all the other requirements.  On the blue card, they have to identify the merit badge counselor that they plan to work with.  (See attachment below for more details)  Worksheets for every merit badge are available at meritbadge.org.  We suggest that each Scout keep a binder with this checklist and their merit badge worksheets, as well as their earned merit badge cards. (Baseball card holder pages work great for keeping your merit badge cards.)

The following is a list of the badges that are required for Eagle and badges that are often available to be earned at summer camp. This  checklist was created to help your scout keep track of their journey to Eagle.

Other ways to earn merit badges

Specific merit badge programs are offered through HOAC and can be found on their website.   “Merit Badge Colleges” are also offered by local groups like Rotary throughout the year. These “colleges” offer the opportunity to earn multiple badges in one day. These events usually require prerequisites or homework.  The Troop Committee will notify parents of these events and will post them on their Troop Calendar.  Click here:  http://bit.ly/2aIv9RM
