I help people to manage their relationship to technology, food, and other things. I do a lot of teaching, graphic design, branding, web development, and speaking engagements on technology topics. I have a long career in desktop support, system administration, and development. I have degrees in the Fine Arts (sculpture) and Organizational Leadership (communication). I really want to help you, let’s find a way to do that.
Read on for details:
I have a passion for design, and legitimately seeing a difference made for the better with the work that I do. But as an independent consultant, the question of recompense is an important one. In order to be compensated for my time in design, consulting, and technology help, I need to gain equal value from the project. Often, value is gained in partnership itself, such as alignment with a noble industry like libraries or education. Sometimes the work gives value in an opportunity for increased awareness of my services to a new or increased audience, such as talks done for not for profit user groups or communities. Sometimes, there is an intrinsic value in doing the work in and of itself, such as in my 365 sketches project. However, there is a particular kind of value in monetary compensation, in that it allows for the continuance of the effort in all other forms.
In many cases, especially where no budget exists for the work, I will consider an exchange of work for something else of value, such as advertising and marketing, an introduction to a new audience, follows, check-ins, or the intrinsic value of feeling that I helped someone who needed it. I am very willing to speak to or otherwise consult with non-profit or low-budgeted organizations free of charge. I reserve the right to arrange this with any client, and kindly refuse payment. I usually take on no more than three active pro bono projects at a time, including volunteer work.
In cases where graphic or other creative work is done pro bono, I consider it creative commons licensed (CC-A or Creative Commons Attribution licensing) work, and expect the license of CC-BY lemasney to be followed, e.g. in your credits and other opportunities for citation, I expect to see the following: Design: cc-by lemasney or Branding cc-by lemasney or Development cc-by lemasney et cetera.
In cases where you have paid for the work, all work files, graphics and other IP generated are entirely yours and licensing and reuse is yours to determine and police.
I have an hourly rate that applies to all work, including phone calls, emails, technology setup, infrastructure work, design, marketing, social media work, presentation, training, and other efforts.
I often do speaking engagements, classroom teaching, technology workshops, seminars, and other group opportunities at a rate of $75/hour. I have references from NJLA, Princeton Public Library, and the State Library System, as well as educational technology, adult learning, collegiate and school programming references.
I prefer payment by cash, credit card, check, or equivalent value in the form of goods, services, or deeds, in that order. I am happy to invoice you if you wish.
In general, I will not accept payment for work that does not meet your satisfaction, and I will make every effort to satisfy your expectations of quality.
Now, let’s do something great together!
