 Belonging to a Special Family

The children will learn to appreciate that they belong to a special family.

What items are use in a baptism?

 

  1. Gather the children on the rug and remind them that they are very special, and we belong to a special family.
  2. Show the children of Baptism.
  3. Explain that Baptism welcomes them into God’s family.
  4. Show the children a bowl of water.
  5. Ask: What water is use for?
  6. Remind them that when we had a wilted plant, we gave it water and the water brought it back to life.
  7. Distribute Activity P. 103.
  8. The teacher will read the top of the page to the children. Explain that all of us are God’s children. We are a special family, the Church.
  9. Point out the baby in the picture. Explain that when they were babies, they were baptized, and became children of God.
  10. Gather godparents, doll, water, and a candle.
  11. Have the  children in a circle and act out a Baptism.
  12. Then welcome baby doll into the family of God.
  13. Ask: What is use in a baptism? What happens when we pour water on a wilted plant? To what family do you and your family belongs to when you are baptized?
  14. Gather children around and lead them in the following prayer: “Dear God, thank you for making me part of a special family called the Church.”

  1. Have the children brainstorm words that describe bullying.
  2. Talk how those words make them feel.
  3. Read aloud “Hands Are Not For Hitting.”
  4. Discuss the story.
  5. Have the children tell what hands are good for.
  6. Make a poster of what hands are good for.
  7. Ask: When someone makes fun or hurt someone what is it called? How would you feel if someone was bullying you? What would you do to stop it?
  8. Have the children draw a face about how they feel about bullying.

The children will learn to experience the concept of Jesus as our Light

 

What does the candle means in Baptism? (Jesus’ light  at Baptism)

 

  1. Tell the children that today we will learn Ask: Do you know what candles are used for? (light, prayer, celebration)
  2. Tell the children that candles are used in Baptism because we are all given Jesus’ light at Baptism.
  3. Ask: What is this? (A candle) What is a candle used for? What does the candle means in Baptism? (Jesus’ light  at Baptism)
  4. Teach the children the song which will be sung during the prayer service (Read to Me Page 105): “Shine, Shine, Shine Your Light.”
  5. Give each child a cup cake.
  6. Help each child spread icing on the top to decorate with sprinkles. then add a birthday candle.
  7. Line cupcakes up on the table to form a cross.
  8. Have the children sing the song, “Shine, Shine, Shine Your Light.”
  9. Tell the children that we are celebrating that we are part of God’s family and that we have the light of Jesus in us.

Help the children express joy in belonging to God’s special family, the Church 

What family do we belong to?

 

  1. Gather children in the rug.
  2. Remind the children they belong to a special family.
  3. Ask: What family do we belong to? (The Church)
  4. Make an outline of a church with masking tape on the floor.
  5. Place a cross at the top.
  6. Have the children cross-legged on the masking tape forming the outline of the church.the teacher will take pictures of the children to show they make up the Church.
  7. Ask: What is the symbol of light in Baptism? Why is a candle use in a baptism? What family do we belong to?
  8. Direct the childrens’ attention to the rays of light across the page.
  9. Remind the children that Jesus if our Light, and we shine with his light for everyone to see.
  10. Have the children sing “Shine, Shine, Shine Your Light.”
