Dear Friend,

Please forgive me for only now replying to your letter of the 20th of August. Let it serve as my excuse that your kind letter arrived while I was at Bad Gastein, where it was sent on to me by my secretary’s office but where – since I was there for a complete rest cure, together with Ferenc Herczeg^[1] – I did not occupy myself with letter-writing.

Despite all this, I took steps to have a complimentary copy of your book^[2] sent without delay to Mr Marcell László.^[3] This has been done.

I can only approve of your wish not to spend the winter in London but to set straight off for the Riviera at the beginning of January. There is no doubt that this will contribute a good deal to a lasting improvement in your strength, just as much as the customary perpetual fogs and rains of London would be detrimental to it.

I was glad to see from your letter that – even if only in your mind – you are focusing on writing your memoirs. Your

life has truly been so eventful and varied that it would be a great service not only for the present generation but also for posterity, if you were to write it all down in a book.

Grateful thanks for your kind invitation, which I will be only too happy to accept if circumstances allow.
