Dear
Representative/Senator ______________:

As a constituent and (professional dedicated to helping American citizens attain the dream of homeownership), I urge you to join the bipartisan group of cosponsors in support H.R. 2994, otherwise known as the Mortgage Forgiveness Tax Relief Act of 2013. H.R. 2994 is a one-year extension of current mortgage debt forgiveness, meaning when lenders forgive a portion of a borrower’s mortgage obligation, the homeowner is not required to pay tax on the amount of debt forgiven.

(We work daily with homeowners facing foreclosure attempting to restructure their mortgage loan or facilitate a short sale). The National Association of Realtors estimates that 20 percent of all homeowners with mortgages in the United States are “under water,” or that they owe more on their mortgage than their home’s current market value.

The vast majority of homeowners that are facing foreclosure due to job loss from the economic downturn caused by the mortgage crisis.  The extension of tax relief would help homeowners regain economic stability and recover from the housing market collapse.

I thank you for taking the time to consider this letter and for your hard work in our district. If you have any further questions about the Mortgage Forgiveness Tax Relief Act of 2013 please feel free to contact me. Have a great day.

Sincerely,
