This preparatory drawing was made on 10 November 1930 during Lord Waterford’s first sitting for his portrait in hunting dress [5170]. The artist kept his first idea for the finished portrait, which differs only in the increased detail and inclusion of the sitter’s crossed arms. The portraits of the sitter and his wife [5173] were commissioned to commemorate their marriage in October 1930.
The first version of Lady Waterford’s portrait [5175] was rejected and the finished portrait was not completed until July 1931. De László also painted the sitter’s mother Lady Beatrix Beauclerk in 1922 [5414].
For biographical notes on the sitter, see [5170].
