Dear Friend,

I read your letter gratefully and with interest just now and intend to be with you in Venice on the 3rd of September which I am looking forward to very much. I just want you to consider the following: to visit Venice at that time of the year is an unhappy choice. You have no idea how people suffer around this time right through to the second half of October from the Zanzarre, the mosquitoes which make many people suffer sleepless nights. In my opinion in order to get some rest you would have done better to stay at the Lido. The open sea there means that you suffer much less or nearly not at all from these disgusting animals in contrast to the city where whole swarms of them rise out of the lagoon and leave nobody alone at night. And don’t for a moment think that these beds with curtains prove a protection against this tiresome nuisance. One of the reasons they don’t offer protection is that it is simply too hot to sleep with the windows closed. The belief that the mosquitoes don’t come if they don’t see a light is also not proven. If I don’t hear from you to the contrary then I shall be at the Hotel Europa.^[1] But if you decide differently after my warning today, do please send me a short message with your Italian address. At that time of the year it is doubtlessly much more practical to stay at the Lido and visit the city of Venice by day then the other way round – to sleep in Venice and visit the Lido during the day. I am seriously worried that you and your family might not get any rest if you risk sleepless nights in Venice.
