Dear Fülöp László,

As a long-time subscriber to Pesti Hírlap, I know you from its articles and illustrations, as well as from the beautiful “Magdalen” painting [2932] which you sent to the Szépművészeti Museum.

Forgive me for troubling you with this letter but although we have never met, I would like to ask you for rather a large favour, which if there is any way of fulfilling, I would most urgently request as a poor Hungarian boy.

I am a technical engineer, 30 years old, unmarried, employed as the foreman in one of the Hungarian factories. I work in the electrical sector, with low and high-tension radio-transmitter lamps and neon tubes for street advertising; I am specially trained in the manufacture of this kind of glasswork.

I have read that from his Surrey villa near London, “His Majesty Prajadhipok the Emperor of Siam^[1] is returning home and a large number of economic experts, craftsmen,

as well as several scientists, have been contracted to accompany him to Bangkok and to serve at the court of Siam for at least three years.”

In short, Sir, I would like to ask you to find some way of recommending me for such a position, for which I would be grateful to you for the rest of my life.

Once again, although we have not met, I ask you if there is any way of doing this, to fulfil a poor Hungarian boy’s request and I have faith in myself that through my expertise I will bring glory to the name of Hungary and to your recommendation.

I have never had any kind of sponsor and I am afraid that in our poor, truncated country my opportunities are very small. I have read so many wonderful things about you and about how well known you are in your new country and how many good English friends you have. It has given me the courage to trouble you with this letter.

Mélyen tisztelt László Fülöp ur!

Mint régi előfizető a Pesti Hírlap cikkeiből és képeiről ismerem azonkívül a Szépművészeti Múzeumnak küldött gyönyörű „Magdolna” képe után.

Bocsásson meg ha zavarom soraimat de egy igen nagy szívességre szeretném megkérni ismeretlenül, amit ha csak egy mód van reá nagyon kérném tegye meg egy szegény magyar fiúnak.

30 éves, nőtlen, technikus mérnök vagyok egyik magyarországi gyárnál üzemvezető. Elektromos szakmában, alacsony és magas feszültségű, rádió-adó lámpák és neon reklám csövek vele kapcsolatban lévő üvegtechnikus munkák gyártásában speciális képzetségem [sic] van.

Olvastam hogy London-közelében „Surreyben” levő villájában „Prajadhipok sziámi császár Őfőméltósága kerül vissza hazájában és igen sok gazdasági szakembert, mesterembert,

sőt több tudóst is leszerződtetett azzal a feltétellel hogy azok őt a elkísérik Bankokba és legalább három éven át a sziámi udvar szolgálatában lesznek.”

Szóval erre szeretném megkérni a művész urat hogy részemre valamilyen módon bejutásomhoz ajánlana, melyért egész életemre hálás lennék önnek.

Mégegyszer kérem ismeretlenül és tegye meg egy szegény magyar fiú kérését ha csak egy mód van reá és én bízom magamba tudásomba hogy a magyar névnek és az ön ajánlásának dicsőséget fogok hozni.

Protekcióm soha nem volt és bizony a törekvésembe szegény csonka országunk kicsi nekem. Önről oly sok szépet olvastam hogy az új hazájában is milyen közismert és mily sok jó angol barátja van. Ez bátorságot adott nekem ahoz [sic] hogy önt ezért zavarjam.
