QUICK GUIDE:

Delivery of Practice Problems

Use the Gradual Release Model, also known as the "I Do, We Do, You Do" approach, to deliver your tutoring sessions.

Step 1

To begin modeling the skill, display the first problem in the practice set on a virtual whiteboard, if available.

Model how to complete the problem by using the GET HELP button for hints.

Screen short of an example practice problem, "Problem One" asking students to discover the array using donuts. an arrow points to the "get help" button.

Step 2

As you click on each hint, be sure to “think aloud” to explain the math concepts being revealed.

Screen short of an example practice problem, "Problem One" asking students to discover the array using donuts. This shows that when the "Get help" button is pressed, a hint appears to help students.

Step 3

Once you’ve demonstrated (“I do”) for one or two problems, transition to a collaborative (“we do”) stage where you and your students work together.

Practice Problem "#2" is shown asking students how many boats are shown in the array. When students use the hint, the prompt helps them to answer the question using hints.

Step 4

For the rest of the Practice Problems #4 - #9, empower your students to take the lead and apply their knowledge independently. Remind them to use self-directed strategies. This practice is the “you do” for students.

Practice Problem #4 asks students how many objects are in the array? The hints shown help students answer the question without giving them the answer.
