A List of COVID-19 Donation Forums

by razaai

Moulali by Sambaran Das

Since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, marginalized groups across India have been hit the hardest. Whether directlythrough the lack of healthcare protection and funds to get treatmentor indirectlyin the loss of shelter, resources, employment, amongst other issuesthere is an evidently distinctive degree of damage wrecked upon the poor and/of various minority groups. As a response to such damage, a large number of groups are trying to collect donations in order to, allegedly, help the marginalized. Many private networks are collecting money to trickle it down to the grassroots; the government-initiated donations have collected a shockingly large amount of funds despite their non-transparent usage; even Facebook and Instagram, to show their support for the cause, have introduced a list of donation forums.

In such times, it is not merely important to donate, but to donate responsibly. Donated funds should reach the affected groups instead of getting caught up or used by the middlemen. Funding  given to big NGOs, programmes with corporate funding, international organizations, government programmes (especially now that they are outside the RTI Act), and other privatized networks do not reach the affected groups to the extent that they should. Rather than giving money to those who are already rich, it is imperative that funds and resources reach the ground directly. In an effort to reduce support for privatized (or non-transparent) donations, razaai - an arts collective has tried to compile a list of forums that provide direct relief to marginalized groups. This involves donations by labour unions, informal collectives, small NGOs, and rural-development groups, rights-based groups, and other related projects. Such a list is hard to compile given the variety of organizations and networks providing relief. Thus, for a more helpful categorization, the list uses a colour-code in order to distinguish various donation forums.

We suggest that you critically go through the various donation forums. This would involve trying to allot your funds to those programmes that do not have significant funding. It is also suggested that donations be directed to non-metropolitan cities and states with more provincial smalltowns that need more funds. This might be a slower process than a quick clickbait by private groups, however, it is essential to the project of donating responsibly.

We hope you all donate as much as you can and urge others to donate as well. A small amount, that might be an off-hand payment for you, or might cause slight inconveniences, could change someone’s life in these trying times. Donations of essentials and protective gear are not only helpful for the poor, but everyone, to reduce the spread of the virus. If you cannot donate, please share this list with as many people as you can. Together, we can amplify and increase relief.

razaai is grateful towards multiple people who helped with the list. Amongst other resources, Amnesty International’s list of donations was the most helpful. Similarly, many of the forums here are from articles by PinkList India and Free Press Kashmir.
