Second Salon To Be Opened In Paris To-day

Exposition of Decorative Arts Responsible for Summer Section of Annual Art Show.

By GEORGES BAL.

A second edition of the Salon organised by the two leading French art societies—the Nationale and the Artistes Français—will be inaugurated with the usual private view to-day. The public opening is tomorrow. The Salon usually closes on June 30, but this year the occupation of the Grand Palais by the Exposition of Decorative Arts has interfered with the customary arrangements. One consequence is that the Salon has been driven to the Tuileries, and another is that the organisers have divided the annual show into two sections, the affluence of visitors to the Exposition during the summer months making a second Salon worth while.

The new Salon contains several works which figured in the first Salon and in the exhibitions of previous years. There is little that is new and less that is really interesting. I could only discover one American work, a large canvas representing Arab women near a stream by Mr. F. A. Bridgman. I may find some more paintings by American artists today when the catalogue is expected to appear.

Among the more striking exhibits on a first glance round the rooms, I may mention a portrait of Marshal Foch by Czedekowski, which is certainly one of the most characteristic studies of the great military chief. The celebrated painter Laszlo shows a fine portrait of an officer in uniform [6363], and Mme. Louise Lavrut has a portrait of a smiling young woman. An idyllic landscape by M. Realier-Dumas, showing ancient ruins overlooking a bay in the Mediterranean, is an interesting work.

Most of the other exhibits are works which have been seen at previous exhibitions and include paintings by MM. Etcheverry, Cyprien Boulet, Dupuy, Bompard, Robert de Montcabrier, Zo, Devambez, Paul Albert Laurens, Dechenard, and Fouqueray.
