Soil Station - Group’s Plot Assignment: |
- Watch the demonstration video on JenkFERST.org.
- Each group member should collect at least one soil sample.
- Each plot has 2 permanent sampling points marked with white PVC pipe. Each group will collect a total of 8 soil samples (4 samples/PVC marker). Each sample should be approximately 5 inches.
- Take the sample back to class.
Label the Ziploc bag with: 1) Plot code; Date; Group Members’ Names
Population and Community Ecology Station |
- Part 1: Compare and Contrast Study Plots
- Visit plots 1-1B, 1-2B, 1-3B and Control B.

- Part 2: Photographic Survey
- Populations/Species (growth forms/functional groups)
- Be sure to record the plots where the populations/species were found.
- Visit as many plots as necessary to accumulate the following images:
4 different grasses | 4 different forbs |
2 different legumes | 2 different “woody” plants |
- Part 3: Google slideshow/document (Total of 9 “slides”)
- Make a slideshow using the images collected at this station.
- 1 Title Page slide with group members’ names (Total of 1 slide)
- 1 slide per growth form/functional group is sufficient. Be sure to title each slide with the growth form/functional group. Each image should be labelled with the plot code where the plant was found. (Total of 4 slides)
- 1 slide per community image taken in Part A. Be sure to title each slide with the plot code where the community image was taken. (Total of 4 slides)
- On the JenksFERST website, go to the “JenksFERST Visit” lesson and submit your group’s slideshow using the submission link found in that lesson’s “Population and Community Ecology Station.”
