Stay Safe Online over the Holidays

This week I have spoken to Year 4, 5 and 6 about staying safe online especially in light of the recent malware attack on the NHS.  I have spoken to the children about not ‘clicking’ on adverts or emails that appear too good to be true and explained that they could attack their computers.  This has actually happened to school this year and luckily our antivirus software kicked in and saved the day!

We also spoke about the use of social media and I was shocked to find out that around 75% of children in our school have snapchat, instagram, musical.ly and live.ly accounts.  ALL these applications are 13+.

Whilst it is up to parents to decide to allow your child on these apps it does concern me that children as young as 8 are being allowed to lie about their age to get these apps.

The NSPCC website has a fantastic section which tells you all about each app and the minimum age, the risks and also gives safety guides.  It can be found here Your guide to the social networks your kids use.

Stay up to date and keep your child safe in today's digital world’.

Below are examples taken from the website:

Instagram risks:

  • Strangers following or talking to them, particularly adults
  • Bullying, especially people posting mean posts or pictures
  • Hacking and fake accounts
  • People screenshotting and sharing their pictures and videos without permission

Live.ly risks:

  • The fact that anyone can see your content if you don’t change your settings or if you add people you don’t know
  • The fact it allows live streaming. Young people thought this was risky if people find out your location, you say inappropriate things or you share personal information.

Musical.ly risks:

  • Hackers
  • Strangers following them and adding them
  • A lack of strong privacy settings

If you do decide to allow your child to have one of these Apps then:

  • please set it up properly with them with a valid email that you monitor
  • make sure everything is locked down with all privacy settings to private
  • you must monitor your child’s activity - regularly

Family Homework

For this week and over half term we would love to find out about your families.

We would like you as a family to  create a simple family tree focusing on names and places of birth / where they live.  If you are happy to share this with us that would be fantastic.

You can do this as a family and draw it out together or on the computer.

Please send in after half term as our focus for Collective Worship is to celebrate family life and  diversity.

This is my family tree - I found this program online but not going to recommend it in case it gives you a virus!

Sponsored Walk

The children were amazing on the walk and the weather was kind!  They were exhausted in the afternoon as were the teachers!

We are aiming to raise £1300 to pay for the artist  David Bowers to create the mosaics with the children in June.  These will be a permanent reminder of the children's hard work on the walk.

The children should have come home with a certificate this week that you can use to prove that they completed the walk and then collect your sponsor money.

Please send in anytime next week or after half term.

Thank you for your support.

JUNIOR NEWBURY BUILDING SOCIETY - Colouring Competition

We are running a colouring competition for all children aged 9 and under. You don’t need to be existing savers to enter. It is open to everyone in the age group.

You can find entry forms here… and here...

The winner will get a £20.00 Newbury Building Society voucher.

The competition will run from 22 May 2017 to 30 June 2017.

Entry forms can be handed in to the JNBS cashiers in school or at the local branch.

Good Luck!

Veggie Patch Volunteers Required!

We are keen to get going with our garden and need some help in digging over the patch so we can get some plants and seeds in.

It shouldn’t take long with a couple of helpers and the children can then hone their growing skills!

If you can help, please contact Jilly Corcoran or leave a message at the School Office.
