Course: Geometry with Data Analysis

Teacher: TiffanyAnn Borton

E-mail: TiffanyAnn.Borton@elmoreco.com

Welcome! In order to create the best learning environment possible, classroom expectations have been developed for our students and I ask that you and your child read through this syllabus carefully together. Then, parents/guardians please complete the student information sheet and sign the last page indicating that you and your child have read and understand these policies.

Communication: I believe that good communication is crucial for your student to excel. For the quickest response, the best way to contact me is via e-mail at tiffanyann.borton@elmoreco.com. I also use parent square and the instructions on how to get on the text messaging list will be posted in my room.

Course Objectives: In Geometry with Data Analysis, students incorporate knowledge and skills from several mathematics content areas, leading to a deeper understanding of fundamental relationships within the discipline and building a solid foundation for further study. In the content area of Geometry and Measurement, students build on and deepen prior understanding of transformations, congruence, similarity, and coordinate geometry concepts. Informal explorations of transformations provide a foundation for more formal considerations of congruence and similarity, including development of criteria for triangle congruence and similarity. An emphasis on reasoning and proof throughout the content area promotes exploration, conjecture testing, and informal and formal justification. Students extend their middle school work with conjecturing and creating informal arguments to more formal proofs in this course. This is a project based course. Be ready to work in groups and be prepared to work with any and everyone in this room.

Required Materials:                                                        Wish List:

1. 2  Composition Notebooks                                                 1. Copy paper

2. pack of sharpened #2 pencils                                         2. Hand sanitizer

3. Pencil sharpener                                                         3. Tissue boxes

4. Colored pencils or (8-10 pack)                                         4. Clorox wipes

5. Blue or black pen (s)                                                 5. Swifter refills

6. Scientific calculator (with sin, cos, tan)                                6. Paper towels

7. at least 2 different colored highlighters

Grading Policy: In this class you will complete hands-on activities, assignments, tests, and projects. I update grades on a weekly basis. Late assignments are graded after all new assignments have been completed and recorded. To get your work graded promptly, simply turn it in on time.

Classroom activities- Can include but are not limited to, individual warm-ups, group practice work activities, working on the board, brain breaks, and so on. It is expected that all students participate in all activities. Students are to enter the room, take out their supplies, update the table of contents in their notebooks and complete the warm-up on their own. These are designed to engage thought and determine what you know. Do not look up the answers in anything but your notebook. Class dojo is one way that I pick volunteers. If you are chosen, you will receive participation points in dojo. The person with the top amount of points can choose a prize each week. Students also receive points for helping others, participating in brain break activities and having the highest score in a brain break activity.

Group/ Pair Work Activities: Students will be doing a lot of group/pair work in this class. All students are expected to contribute to the assignment and to work collaboratively with the other student(s) in the group. Working individually is not an option.  A rubric will be used for all projects. Students in the group will receive credit for the work that he or she completes. This may or may not be the same grade as the other members of the group.

Individual or Group Independent studies: For some topics pre learning checks will be administered. If you score a 100% on the pre learning check you have the opportunity to do an independent study. You would either do a research paper, create and complete a project or develop a presentation. Your topic would have to be pertaining to math  and or technology and preferably be in the domain of geometry. You would develop your rubric, get it approved by me, for me to use to grade the assignment as well as what you would turn in daily to show progress. On the first day you would have to turn in a completed timeline. If you choose this route you must stick to it and turn in a finished product by the end of the time allotted for that material, usually the end of a week or two.

Make-up Work: (excused absence) Your absence is your responsibility. If you know you will be out make arrangements with me to get your work before you go. If at all  possible, do your missed work before the next time we meet. All assignments are on google classroom. Upon return to school see me within 3 days to arrange a reasonable length of time to make up your work, not to exceed two (2) weeks.

Notebooks: Notebooks are a major grade. You are responsible for everything if you are present or not. Writing absent on a page will get zero credit. You will be given at least 2 weeks notice of the due date for your notebooks. The notebook will be due the first day and accepted without penalty the next day. The day after that it will be accepted at a 50% max. After the 50% max  day the notebook will not be accepted for that quarter. Those with extended time get one day passed the due date only.  If you are going to be on a field trip or out for any reason on the due date, turn it in early.

Late Work: Test corrections and Notebooks will not be accepted late under any circumstances. The due dates for those items are given well in advance and have a range of days that they will be accepted. All late work will be docked 15%. The maximum possible grade for all late work will be 85%. Commitments to sports, band, dance, cheerleading, drama, field trips or any other extra-curricular activities are not a reason to turn in late work!   I will accept late/redo work for the first four weeks of a quarter until the progress report comes out with a 15% deduction for late work. Work from week 5 - 8 will be accepted late, with the 15% deduction until 3 pm Friday of the 8th week. No work will be accepted after these time periods. Basically, everything before the progress report is  only accepted during that time period and everything after that until the end of the quarter. Students that need to make up work and have not turned it in, in a timely manner, will receive flex detention until the work is complete.

Cheating: Will not be tolerated. If I suspect that you are cheating on a test. That test is voided and you will be given an alternate test on another day, which will be scheduled by me, that is a short answer and essay test.

Food and/or drinks: Food and/or drinks cannot be insight or a nuisance. Be discrete, do not share and clean up after yourself. If I find trash after your class. That block will no longer be allowed to have food or drink in the classroom.

Cell Phones or Other Electronic Devices Cell phones are not to be used in class under any circumstances. If I see one, I will contact the administration right away. Only chromebooks may be used for classwork.

Classroom Rules: Students are expected to adhere to the dress code and code of conduct  at all times in addition to the following:

1. Be Respectful        2. Be Responsible        3. Try your best

Class Behavior: Students are expected to follow classroom rules. Minor infractions will be documented and will have immediate consequences. If a student breaks or damages my classroom supplies, the parent will be notified and the student is expected to replace the damaged supplies. If students are disrespectful to one another they will receive detention during flex time.  Parents will be informed of these infractions. Repeated Infractions will result in the student being written up and the write up sent to the  administrator.

Netiquette :  Please use common sense.
