Research

IT Service Management and Business Intelligence

Together with her colleague Elsa Cardoso, started in 2008 to research in the areas of IT Service Management [C14, MSC3] and Business Intelligence [C13, MSC2].

Fénix@ISCTE project

Based on a protocol between ISCTE-IUL and IST, the Fénix@ISCTE project started in 2005 and consisted in the conjoint development of the FénixEDU open source project, initially developed by IST alone. FénixEDU is one of the leading academic management systems in Portugal.

Zás project

A project aiming at the study and development of an aspect-oriented authorization system [TR20, C12, MSC1].

SCRUARM project

Based on a protocol between ISCTE-IUL and Brisa, the SCRUARM project took place between 2002 and 2005. One of its aims was to develop license-plate recognition techniques, based on image analysis, for use in paid motorways to detect frauds [TR17,TR18,TR19,C10,C11].

MODEST project

The ACTS/EU MODEST project aimed at developing an agent based highway surveying system. From 1998 until 1999, participation in the development of agent communication techniques, of a domain specific description definition language, as required by MPEG-7, and of techniques for typical vehicle trajectory estimation and detection of the abnormal behavior of vehicles for camera surveyed highway segments [C9].

MAVT (Mobile Audio-Visual Terminal) project

From 1992 until 1995, participated in the RACE/CEC MAVT project and the closely related COST211ter project [TR1-TR14]. The projects aim was to develop a mobile videophone and the corresponding very low bitrate video coding techniques. Directed an ad hoc group dedicated to the study of video segmentation techniques yielding motion and texture coherent partitions [TR12,TR13,TR14].

Advanced video coding

From 1992 until 1999 researched advanced video coding techniques at the Image Group of IT (Telecommunications Institute[12], IST – UTL). Developed global motion compensation and cancellation techniques for mobile video telephony [C3,TR1,TR2,TR3,TR4,TR6]; studied knowledge-based segmentation techniques for improving the subjective quality of very low bitrate coding of mobile video telephony [TR5,TR7,C4], object-based coding techniques [TR9], and advanced segmentation techniques [C5,J1,C8]; studied contour coding techniques [C6,J2,TR8, TR10,TR11,TR16] and the segmentation and motion estimation interdependency problem [TR13]; and designed object-oriented video codecs [C7].

Computer control of distillation columns

From 1989 until 1992 studied distillation column dynamics [C2], developed a distillation column simulator (in C) [TAP3], and designed a binary distillation column control system using classical and robust techniques [TAP4].

FSVs (Free Swimming Vehicles)

From 1988 until 1989 studied the dynamics of Free Swimming Vehicles (FSV) [TAP2]; developed a visualization engine for the simulation of FSVs (in C) [TAP1]; and studied variable structure control [TAP2] and adaptive control [C1] performance when applied to the control of FSVs.
