The children will demonstrate that some objects stay on top of water while other objects go to the bottom.

What do you predict would happen  if we put each of these objects in the bowl of water?

  1. Review solid liquid and gas.
  2. Fill a clear plastic bowl with water.
  3. Display flip chart page 50.
  4. read the title aloud and track text.
  5. Have the children identify the pictured materials. (Bowl of water, wooden block, pencil, sponge, rock) Ask: Which of these objects are liquids? Which of the objects are solid? What do you predict would happen  if we put each of these objects in the bowl of water? Which objects would stay on top of water? Which objects would go to the bottom of the water?
  6. Check the children’s prediction, encourage them to to tell why they think they do.
  7. Record predictions next to each object’s name in the first column.
  8. Have the children sort objects by groups.
  9.  Have the children check their predictions.
  10. Have the children tell what they observed.
  11. Discuss the results.

 The children will:

  • Demonstrate that solids can be change by cutting, folding, bending and melting.
  • Demonstrate that liquids can be changed by freezing and melting.

How can solids and liquids change?

  1. Display a sheet of paper.
  2. Ask: Is this paper a solid or a liquid? ( A solid) What can you do to the paper to change it? (Cut, fold, bend, and color it) Demonstrate these actions and display the results. Is this still paper? (Yes)
  3. Use Flip Chart page 51 to review vocabulary terms.
  4. Ask: Have you ever put powder paint into water and mixed with a spoon? What happens with the paint? (It becomes liquid.) Is a fruit pop a solid or a liquid when you take it out of the freezer? What happens if you leave a frozen fruit pop on a plate in the sun? How does it change? (It melts.) When you fold your paper , is it still paper, or does it change into something else? (Still a paper) How has the straight pipe cleaner been changed? (It is bendt.)
  5. Discuss how solids and  liquids can change.
  6. Have the children use picture clues and answer the following questions: Where can I put water to have it freeze and change from liquid to a solid? What happen to ice cubes in my glass if I left it sitting in the sun?
  1. Have you ever put powder paint into water and mixed with a spoon?
  2. What happens with the paint? (It becomes liquid.)
