Webquest -- Fractions Introduction
For this webquest, try each exercise, video, or activity. Make a note when you have completed each one. This webquest is meant as an introduction to fractions and should be completed before the beginning of a 5th grade unit on fractions. This is meant to review topics taught in previous grade levels.
- Check out this slideshare presentation on fraction basics. When you have completed the slideshow, draw a diagram representing three fourths. Draw another representing three fifths.
- What is a fraction? Read a simple explanation here. Now try out this more complex explanation. Finally, use this tool to show you visual examples of different fractions. Now explain what a fraction is using words.
- Fractions are division problems. Watch this Khan Academy video which illustrates this point. Now check out this Math Antics video on the same concept. Finally, try out some online practice from Khan Academy and a few practice problems from Math Antics.
- Fractions can be represented on a number line. View this first slideshare on number lines and try the activities at the end on scratch paper. This slideshare covers the same concept and talks about how it applies to a ruler. When you have completed these slideshows, draw a number line from zero to one which shows eighths on it. Then draw a number line from zero to four and place halves and fourths on it.
- You can convert a fraction into a decimal by dividing. Watch this review video on this concept. Learn a different method on this video. Take this quiz when you have mastered this concept. Please show your results to your teacher and record your score.
