PALOS VERDES BREAKERS DEVELOPMENTAL TEAM
RECOMMENDED DRIBBLING DRILLS
WARMUP BALL CONTROL EXERCISE – Beginning with ball in right hand, circle the body by passing the ball from right hand to left hand and back to right hand, starting by circling the head/shoulders, then continuing down to the waist, then around both legs, then around each leg and back up again. Change directions and repeat.
STRETCH – Player places left leg in a stretch position behind him with the foot turned sideways for balance. Right leg is bent and player dribbles hard with right hand, the ball just outside his right foot. Switch leg positions and dribbling hand and repeat.
POWER – Player assumes good dribbling position: knees bent, feet staggered slightly, back straight, chin level to the floor, eyes scanning. Player dribbles hard with the ball just outside his lead foot, keeping the dribbling hand no higher than the knees. Switch lead foot and dribbling hand and repeat.
PUSH-PULL – From good dribbling position, Player dribbles the ball in a V fashion on the side of his body, moving his hand from the front to the back of the ball so that the ball is pushed forward and pulled backward. Switch sides and repeat.
SIDE TO SIDE - From good dribbling position, Player dribbles the ball in a V fashion in front of his body, quickly moving his hand from one side of the ball to the other so that the ball is pushed away from the dribbling hand side and pulled back toward the dribbling hand side. Switch sides and repeat.
V DRIBBLE – From good dribbling position, Player dribbles the ball in a V fashion from hand to hand as quickly as possible, keeping the ball knee-height or lower. Repeat the exercise, dribbling the ball behind the body instead of in front of the body.
BETWEEN THE LEGS – Player extends right leg and dribbles the ball in a V fashion from right hand to left and back again. Switch lead legs and repeat, starting with the ball in the left hand.
FIGURE EIGHT – Player dribbles the ball in a figure eight fashion around both of his legs using his right and left hands. Three dribbles with the right and crossover to three dribbles with the left. Initially dribble through legs from back to front, then change directions and dribble through legs front to back.
SMALL & TALL – From good dribbling position, Player does low (below the knee) Power dribbles for 5 seconds, then remains in that position and does high (shoulder height) Power dribbles for 5 seconds, then repeats low-to-high combinations. One minute each side.
BALANCE – Player assumes good dribbling position, then holds left leg out behind him and balances on right leg. Player does Power dribbles with right hand for 30 seconds, then switches to left leg/left hand and repeats.
SAME/ALTERNATE – Player assumes good dribbling position and does Power dribbles with both hands simultaneously for 30 seconds, keeping the same rhythm with each hand so that both balls bounce at the same time. Player then changes the rhythm so that the dribbles are staggered, with one ball bouncing, then the other. Continue for 30 seconds, then repeat Same-Alternate.
THREE-BOUNCE CROSSOVER – From good dribbling position, Player dribbles both balls for three bounces, then crosses over each ball simultaneously to the other hand.
SMALL & TALL – Same drill as one-ball Small & Tall, but using two balls at the same time. Begin by keeping both balls in unison, then alternate which ball is “small” and which ball is “tall”.
FULL COURT SPEED DRIBBLE – Dribble the length of the court in 6 or fewer dribbles while running full speed. Requires pushing the ball out in front of the Player. Go right-handed one direction and left-handed in the opposite direction.
FULL COURT SPEED CROSSOVER – While running full speed, dribble diagonally up the court, changing direction at the free throw line, half-court and far free throw line using an aggressive crossover dribble.
FULL COURT SPEED PROTECT – While running full speed, dribble diagonally up the court to the free throw line, stop and assume protective stance while keeping the dribble going. Crossover dribble to the opposite hand and explode at full speed to the half-court line, stop and again assume protective stance while keeping the dribble going. Crossover and repeat to far free throw line, then to the far baseline. Repeat in the opposite direction, beginning with the other hand.
QUARTER-COURT JUMP STOP-PIVOTS – While running full speed, speed dribble to the free throw line and execute a controlled jump stop. Forward Pivot a quarter-turn while keeping left foot planted and fake a pass, repeat three more times until again facing forward down the court. Speed dribble with other hand to half-court line, jump stop, and execute four Forward Pivots again, this time keeping right foot planted. Continue to far free throw line and repeat, using Reverse Pivots instead, and continue to the far baseline and repeat again in opposite direction.
