Achievement Awards Criteria

**Teachers of all applicants must be members of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French

Award 1:  Barbara P. Ransford Award, $500

For a secondary school student study trip to a French-speaking country or to the Arkansas Language Immersion Camp

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

  1. Participation in the National French Contest and the score, if known by the application deadline (previous year's data is acceptable).
  2. A current scholastic record. An unofficial transcript is acceptable
  3. Two letters of recommendation:  one from the applicant’s French teacher, one from another teacher.
  4. A list of extracurricular activities: clubs, etc., offices held, awards received.
  5. The purpose and plans for the trip.
  6. A written composition by the applicant on the advantages of studying a foreign language.
  7. Upon completion of the trip the student must submit a daily diary of the trip must be shared via Google Docs with arkansasfrench@gmail.com 
  8. The teacher of the applicant must be a current member of AATF.

 

                                                                         

Award 2:  Marty Deweese Grant, $500

For professional development        

           

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

  1. Applicant must be a member of AATF with at least a two-fifths teaching assignment in French.
  2. Two letters of recommendation, one from the principal or chair, the other from another member of the foreign language teaching profession.
  3. A statement written by the applicant stating the study plans, goals and benefits to be derived from the study program.
  4. Commitment from the recipient to give a presentation on the contents and benefits derived from the program at the applicant's respective AFLTA district meeting.

 

Award 3:  Lucille Colaianni, $600

For a college student study trip to a French-speaking country

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:

  1. A declared French major pursuing certification to teach French
  2. An intermediate high score (or better) on an oral proficiency examination with official documentation of test with rating
  3. An essay on "Why I Want To Teach French"
  4. An unofficial transcript of the applicant's college courses
  5. The overall grade point average in French
  6. Two letters of recommendation: one from an applicant’s French professor; one from another instructor
  7. The goals and plans for the trip
  8. Commitment to send a diary of the trip shared via Google Docs with arkansasfrench@gmail.com 
  9. The professor of the applicant must be a current AATF member

 

Award 4:  Dr. Annette Zakharian College Tuition Stipend, $500

For a high school student entering college

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

  1. The applicant must intend to pursue some French course(s).
  2. Participation in the National French Contest and the score, if known by the application deadline (previous year's data is acceptable if current is unavailable)
  3. A current scholastic record.
  4. Two letters of recommendation: one from the applicant’s French teacher, one from another teacher.
  5. A list of extracurricular and leadership activities.
  6. A list of awards.
  7. A composition by the student: "Why I Intend To Pursue French Language Study in College."
  8. The teacher of the student must be a current member of AATF.
