Achievement Awards Criteria
**Teachers of all applicants must be members of the Arkansas Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French
Award 1: Barbara P. Ransford Award, $500
For a secondary school student study trip to a French-speaking country or to the Arkansas Language Immersion Camp
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:
- Participation in the National French Contest and the score, if known by the application deadline (previous year's data is acceptable).
- A current scholastic record. An unofficial transcript is acceptable
- Two letters of recommendation: one from the applicant’s French teacher, one from another teacher.
- A list of extracurricular activities: clubs, etc., offices held, awards received.
- The purpose and plans for the trip.
- A written composition by the applicant on the advantages of studying a foreign language.
- Upon completion of the trip the student must submit a daily diary of the trip must be shared via Google Docs with arkansasfrench@gmail.com
- The teacher of the applicant must be a current member of AATF.
Award 2: Marty Deweese Grant, $500
For professional development
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:
- Applicant must be a member of AATF with at least a two-fifths teaching assignment in French.
- Two letters of recommendation, one from the principal or chair, the other from another member of the foreign language teaching profession.
- A statement written by the applicant stating the study plans, goals and benefits to be derived from the study program.
- Commitment from the recipient to give a presentation on the contents and benefits derived from the program at the applicant's respective AFLTA district meeting.
Award 3: Lucille Colaianni, $600
For a college student study trip to a French-speaking country
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION:
- A declared French major pursuing certification to teach French
- An intermediate high score (or better) on an oral proficiency examination with official documentation of test with rating
- An essay on "Why I Want To Teach French"
- An unofficial transcript of the applicant's college courses
- The overall grade point average in French
- Two letters of recommendation: one from an applicant’s French professor; one from another instructor
- The goals and plans for the trip
- Commitment to send a diary of the trip shared via Google Docs with arkansasfrench@gmail.com
- The professor of the applicant must be a current AATF member
Award 4: Dr. Annette Zakharian College Tuition Stipend, $500
For a high school student entering college
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
- The applicant must intend to pursue some French course(s).
- Participation in the National French Contest and the score, if known by the application deadline (previous year's data is acceptable if current is unavailable)
- A current scholastic record.
- Two letters of recommendation: one from the applicant’s French teacher, one from another teacher.
- A list of extracurricular and leadership activities.
- A list of awards.
- A composition by the student: "Why I Intend To Pursue French Language Study in College."
- The teacher of the student must be a current member of AATF.
