GHE Fundraising Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where are we with our current Fundraising Goals?
  • If the school is publicly funded by taxpayers, why should I donate money to the PTA?
  • Yes, our schools are publicly funded, but state and county funds do not cover many of the “extras” (see below) that make GHE a great school for students, parents, staff and teachers!
  • By providing funding for the items listed in the budget below, we can continue to attract and retain quality staff; they provide the framework for our students’ success!
  • Not So Fun Facts about NC Public School Funding
  • $35,000 for Facilities- This is the largest portion of the budget, but these are the improvements made to GHE over the years
  • Repainted Media Center, added flexible seating, added new collaboration tables
  • Increased and improved GHE’s recess areas:
  • K-2 Playground (Click for Images): added an additional play structure, resurfaced the play area, added banners and awnings, repainted existing play structure, new landscaping
  • Purchased metal and wooden “Buddy” benches for the playground
  • Improved GHE’s technology
  • Added 30 Laptops, 15 All In Ones, 3 Apple IMacs, new chairs and collaborative tables
  • Increased Classroom Technology: added 40 portable Smart Boards, 45 Touch and Dual Boards, 41 Short Throw Projectors (less chance of tripping over cords and allows more activity space in classroom) and 40 Mini Ipads.
  • $14,500 Teacher Supplies and Grants- Each year teachers can submit grants for specific needs in their classrooms such as class size carpet mats for all Kindergarten/1st Grade teachers or grade level specific nonfiction text  classroom sets. All GHE teachers receive a PTA $120 supply fund to buy the materials they need for their classrooms.
  • $10,000+  Doughnuts for Dads, Math and Science Night, Bingo Night, Ice Cream Social, 5th Grade Recognition, GHE musical, licenses, printing costs, GHE competitions, GHE clubs, GHE Awards and Recognition, cultural arts/educational programs, etc.
  • $4,000 for Online Technology Licenses- The PTA pays the licenses for educational applications such as  Reading A-Z, RAZ Kids, Moby Max, etc. These applications allow students to further their learning both inside and outside of the classroom!
  • $5,400 Hospitality- Provides catered food for teacher lunches
  • $1000 Recess Equipment- Replace/repair recess and PE equipment each year.
  • $3500 Specialist Support-  Instruments, art supplies, etc.
  • $2,000 Field Day- Covers inflatables, supplies, snacks, games, etc.
  • Why do you send so many e-mails?
  • Statistically, our strongest pledges always come in on the last night of Boosterthon. We are normally always $10,000 or more off within 24 hours of the event.
  • Why is the hospitality and appreciation budget $5400? Can’t we trim that down?
  • In the past, we tried to do parent “pot luck” donations when feeding our teachers, but we didn’t receive enough items and had to supplement the meal anyway.  We still do one or two meals “potluck” style but the rest we cater.
  • Why do we use a program like Boosterthon when fundraising companies take so much of our donations?
  • Before using Boosterthon our average contributions were $60,000. Boosterthon (on average) brings in an additional $25,000 a year.
  • We’ve looked into other fundraising opportunities (cookie dough, wrapping paper, butter braids, chocolate/candy, magazines, etc.)  Those venues either provide the same percentage or LESS when comparing the returns.  Boosterthon is also a sliding scale; the more contributions we receive, the higher percentage of kickback we earn!
  • Boosterthon doesn’t require students, parents, or teachers to navigate paper orders, handling monies, storage and delivery of sold goods, etc.
  • The Boosterthon Team provides mini character lessons in all of our classrooms; they genuinely care about connecting with our kids while they are here.
  • Over the past 7 years, Boosterthon has provided over $200,000 in additional funds to our school!
  • The Boosterthon Team handles the set-up, tear down, prize distribution, etc.  If you haven’t experienced a FunRun, please watch this Boosterthon Video to understand it a bit more.
  • We have the Book Fairs, why do we need Boosterthon?
  • All funds raised from the book fairs go directly to the Media Center so that they can continue to purchase, replace, and update the resources available to the students.  PTA funds the Book Fair Parent Night (cookies and entertainment) to help boost funds for the Media Center.
  • Why don’t we just create our own large Fundraiser and keep all of the funds raised?
  • We do this with our Spring Carnival. It brings in $15,000 in contributions. However, it takes an ENORMOUS effort
  • Coordinating 90 volunteers from Cary Teen Council
  • Requires 30+ parent and teacher volunteers the night of
  • Estimated 250+ volunteer  hours to make carnival happen (decorations, securing sponsorships, buying raffle basket items, buying supplies, setting up games, etc.)
  • Every year we struggle to find enough people for the required slots to make carnival happen.
  • I don’t want to donate money when a portion is taken by the fundraising company; what can I do?
  • I’m already donating to charities, religious organizations, disaster relief, etc.  What if I don’t have much to give?
  • Any donations (no matter the size) are greatly appreciated!
