Communications Manager - Social Media and Digital

Number of vacancies: 1 (one)

Duration: One-year Consultancy contract offered on a part-time self employed  basis (two-three days per week), with the possibility of extension, subject to funding.

Working hours: Flexible working hours, but the expectation of being available between core working hours between UTC-6 (e.g.: Mexico City, New York) and UTC+3 (Madrid, Nairobi) time zones. 

Location: This is a remote role as part of a global team who all work virtually

Remuneration: Estimated rate of around 400 USD per day depending on experience and location/cost of living. You will be self-employed and expected to manage your own expenses and taxes, and report according to your country requirements.

Job purpose

We are seeking an innovative and passionate social media and digital specialist to maintain and grow our social media and digital presence. With the support and direction of Our Kids’ Climate’s Communications Lead,  you will implement Our Kids’ Climate’s social media and wider digital strategy.  

You will ensure that there is a flow of engaging content posted and scheduled across our main social media channels (Instagram, LinkedIn, X and Facebook). You will monitor and analyze social media performance. You will look for ways to improve our website presence and help set up new digital offerings, for instance, a mailing list. You will be responsible for writing a regular newsletter.  

Though your focus will be social media and digital, you may also be required to  provide support and ideas for wider communications at Our Kids’ Climate, for example assisting with communications across our programs (microgrants, fellowship, community) and campaigns as needed.

Who are you?

You are an experienced social media and digital specialist, ideally with experience working in the climate and social justice space. You are an excellent communicator, highly collaborative, self-starting, and organized. You are passionate about the power of intergenerational and parent-led climate organizing and committed to helping Our Kids’ Climate thrive and flourish in the social media landscape and wider digital world. You will be happy to be part of a small but growing team and be flexible enough to provide strategic advice and support on other aspects of communications as needed.

Main responsibilities

This role will be responsible for the day-to-day running of Our Kids’ Climate’s social media channels under the direction and guidance of the organization’s Communications Lead. It will also help ensure that other aspects of the organization’s digital presence, such as its website, are optimized, and help set up a new mailing list/newsletter for the organization.  

The role will:

  • Work with Our Kids’ Climate Communications Lead to develop, refine and then deliver a creative and engaging social media and digital strategy for the organization.

  • Create a clear schedule/diary of upcoming social media content and manage the day-to-day posting on social media channels, currently Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X.  

  • Create a dashboard to monitor, track and analyze Our Kids’ Climate’s performance on social media to ensure we can learn from what works and finesse our strategy.

  • Broker and coordinate social media partnerships with influencers and other organizations as required.

  • Keep across social media/digital trends and developments and use this knowledge to refine Our Kids’ Climate’s social media strategy.

  • Help optimize Our Kid’s Climate’s website and set up a digital mailing list/newsletter.  

  • Attend weekly one-to-one meetings with Our Kids’ Climate’s Communications Lead and other meetings with campaigns and program colleagues as required.  

  • Assist with other ad-hoc communications needs as required.

Person Specification - Qualifications, skills and experience

  • Substantial experience in social media management and running successful and creative social media accounts and campaigns, ideally on climate change or other social issues.

  • Strong writing and editing skills in English, and ability to tailor copy and content to different platforms, as well as the ability to rapidly absorb information from a variety of sources and translate it into effective social media copy.

  • Experience in producing regular reports on social media analytics and using this information to refine social media strategy and content.
  • Experience in creating and/or commissioning short-form video content for social media channels. Filming and in particular editing skills would be an asset in this role.
  • Knowledge and experience of using key tools for social media and digital content, such as graphic design tools like Canva, scheduling tools, such as Hootsuite, video editing tools, such as Capcut, and digital marketing tools such as Mailchimp.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to drive successful social media/digital campaigns, while fostering collaboration and partnership across Our Kids’ Climate’s team and global network.
  • Team player with proven ability to work in a cross-cultural environment, and keen to play a fully active role in a small, nimble, virtual team.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal abilities, with fluency in English.
  • Passionate about working with parents and intergenerational activists committed to pushing for a safer, healthier planet for all children.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of setting up a mailing list and running email marketing campaigns/creating email newsletters.
  • Experience and knowledge of social media advertising.
  • Experience in maintaining websites, tracking website analytics and SEO.

Candidates will be responsible for filing their own taxes as this post is initially offered on a consultancy basis.
