
Open Education Conference Advisory Board
Description of Requirements & Responsibilities
The Open Education Conference is an annual convening for sharing and learning about open educational resources, open pedagogy, and open education initiatives. Building on a twenty-year history, the conference is organized through a community-driven process led by an elected Advisory Board.
The Open Education Conference Advisory Board will hold an election to select six new members to join the Board starting January 1, 2026.
Composition & Selection
As per election bylaws, the Advisory Board is comprised of 12 total members including:
- Six seats that will be filled by an election in 2025 to serve a term from January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027.)
- Six seats for returning members whose terms expire on December 31, 2026.
- Any additional ex officio (non-voting) members appointed by the Board.
Board Responsibilities
- Make major decisions about planning and priorities for a sustainable, community-led conference.
- Provide leadership for any additional project groups as required to implement key aspects of the conference plan, such as: program, strategic planning, community engagement, and communications.
- Decide on conference themes and keynote speakers.
- Work as a team and with the conference staff to run the conference and manage relations with the community.
- Shape conference policies and procedures and consult on decisions about sponsors, vendors, and major budget questions.
- Oversee the conference’s fiscal agent and its management of conference finances, intellectual property, data, and other assets.
- Hold regular public meetings to discuss the conference planning process with the community and to support transparency.
Participation Requirements
- Attend regularly scheduled meetings and ad hoc meetings as required.
- Actively engage in the conference planning process between board meetings, ensuring timely completion of key milestones
- Lead or co-lead a project group, participate in relevant meetings, and consistently update the board on the progress of key activities.
- Take responsibility for assigned tasks, ensuring they are completed on time with appropriate consultation from the board and community
- Participate in public meetings with the community.
- Attend and help facilitate the conference, either virtually or in-person attendance.
Eligibility & Commitment for Board Members Starting in 2025
- Board members must identify with the Open Education Conference community and actively support its Strategic Vision.
- Board members must have attended at least one Open Education Conference.
- Board members must commit a minimum of 6-10 hours per month, including meetings and asynchronous work, with additional time required during the month of the conference.
- Board members must ensure, to the best of their ability, that they are able to attend the annual Open Education Conference during their term (either virtually or in person).
- Board members must agree to abide by and uphold the Open Education Conference Code of Conduct.
