Welcome to a new school year! Our team is excited to be together once again. Be on the lookout for “Meet the Teacher” on August 11th, and “Back to School Nights on September 6th and 7th. I hope to meet you at both events. During August the students and I will spend time learning about each other as well as learning Woodridge procedures throughout our building.

In Room 506 the  students engage in learning experiences that encourage them to live the life of our learning profile.  Curriculum standards are accessed through different learning platforms - online, lab investigations, field trips, journaling, classwork and reading. You are encouraged to visit, help out, and become part of our learning experience. Our door is open.

Our science year starts by reviewing science safety, tools and science lab procedures.  During August, students will set up a science notebook as well as learn how to construct a well written scientific response using a scaffold: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning. Our resources are Stemscopes, Scholastic News, Generation Genius, and Pearson Interactive Science.

Our year starts with learning about the components of social studies: history, geography, economics, civics and government.  Students will set up a social studies notebook to record learning experiences.  Our resources are Teacher Created Materials, Scholastic News and History Alive selections.

Technology is integrated into our studies. Students are issued an ipad for classroom use. Students learn digital citizenship and practice working collaboratively as well as applying learning experiences to real-world situations. Be on the lookout for weekly email communications that share photos and movie clips of our learning experiences.

homework_clipart_2.jpgFifth grade has homework 50 minutes an evening, 4 times a week.  Mrs. Thompson, Mr. Simpson and I offer times before, during and after school for students to get help with assignments.  Please keep us informed of your child’s needs.  Classwork and homework will be adjusted to the needs of individual students.

Looking forward to a great year.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Dixon
