Zoltán Szász, ‘Spring Exhibition. Portraits, Landscapes[1]

Room VII is dominated by portraits, with two by Horovitz, two by Lotz and four by László [4825][7243][111074][111114], whose star is on the rise, not only for the number of commissions he receives but also in terms of admirers. The four works shown here attest to a fine talent, though it would have been better to have exhibited only two, the two at either end, which would have created a more distinguished overall impression. The slenderness of Mrs Hubai [4825] is interesting, almost translucent in quality, somewhat reminiscent of a dainty painting on porcelain. The portrait of Karina Friese [7243] lacks a lifelike sense of unforced nonchalance. The two other works are more successful [111074][111114], although neither can be said to demonstrate any kind of progress or development on the part of the artist.
