JoffreyRED & Joffrey West Summer Residence Life FAQ (2025)

The Residence Hall is located on the California State University Long Beach campus. Our live-in Housing staff are available to students and parents 24 hours a day and assist by providing support and guidance at the dorm and studio. Students can sign up for an escort to and from the studio.

Please Note: California State University Long Beach reserves the right to move the Joffrey Ballet School RED or West summer intensive housing students to a different dorm on their campus which may have different amenities, including no AC. Joffrey Ballet School will update the website, materials, and registered students if the dorm location changes.

Every effort should be made by students to arrive during the designated check-in time. Early check-in will not be available. Students will check in at Parkside North and will be directed to the dorm. Dancers are required to attend in-person orientation after check-in, and will also be preparing their living spaces for the week.

CHECK OUT

Students must check out of the dorm before they leave for classes on the Friday of their last week.

Joffrey will provide storage for students who would like to pick up their belongings after classes. All belongings must be picked up on Friday. Housing students are required to schedule a check out time and will be required to move out during that time. Dancers staying at the dorm for multiple weeks do not have to check out during the weekends.

Are students escorted to the studios?

Joffrey Housing staff will provide an escort to/from the dorm on a sign-up basis for all housing students. Students 13 and under will be accompanied by a Joffrey staff member at all times. This includes daily trips to/from the assigned studio. The students will have scheduled meeting times each morning to meet to travel together to the studios. They will also have a scheduled travel group to return to the housing locations for evening check in.

Can I have a roommate?

Students may request roommates under the following conditions: Roommates must reside in housing for the same period of time and must attend the same intensive and be assigned to the same group. Please note that although we will make every effort to accommodate requests, it might not always be possible. Roommate Requests are $100 per dancer. If we are unable to honor a request, the resident will receive a credit towards their tuition.

Are meals available? What is included?

The meal plan is required for dancers staying in housing.

Additional information: The campus dining hall does not permit outside food, bags, or water bottles. Dancers may leave items in locked studios during lunch, or in the student common room at the studios. Students will receive their first meal on Sunday evening after they check in and the last meal on Friday morning before they check out. Students must present their campus access cards (distributed at check in) to enter the campus dining hall. The dining hall is approximately a 10 minute walk from both the studios and the dorm.

Is there a packing list?

Bedding: Students are allowed to bring mattress toppers/mattress pads.
Bathroom essentials and toiletries.
Electronics: laptops, tablets, chargers, etc. JBS does not provide cable.
Storage: Hangers and any other desired storage containers.
Cell Phone: All housing students are required to have a phone with a United States phone number. International students may choose to purchase a “pay as you go” package or turn on their roaming feature.
Cleaning supplies: Disinfectant/sanitizing/cleaning products, wipes, paper towels, broom, trash bags, laundry detergent, etc. Students will be responsible to keep their apartments clean and tidy during their stay. Joffrey will have some cleaning supplies that students could borrow.

Provided: Bed sheets, blankets, pillows, toilet paper

Is Airport Transportation available?

Joffrey Ballet School does not offer Airport Transportation for the JoffreyRED or Joffrey West intensives.

Are there any extra activities?

Joffrey Ballet School will host extra activities for housing students. These activities will take place in the evenings and during the weekends. Information for activities will be posted on the student Band groups.

All JBS events are escorted and chaperoned by staff members. Students (17 and younger) attending activities will automatically have a curfew extension. Legal Guardians do not need to submit a request for a curfew extension. All Housing Students (20 and younger) must check in for curfew after returning from the activity.

Most of the activities will be free to housing students. JBS will notify students if any ticketed activities become available. Students should budget for activities if they want to purchase food, treats, clothes or souvenirs.

Who will be supervising my dancer at the dorm?

The Residence Life Department team consists of a group of live-in Resident Advisors (RAs) who rotate duty shifts. The RA on duty can be reached 24/7. The team facilitates daily operations and handles crises or emergencies should they arise. RAs are also available to take students (17 and younger) to the doctor, conduct rounds to ensure health and safety. Our team meets with students to conduct mediations, conflict resolution meetings, friendship introductions and any other situation that students need assistance with.

All of our summer interns take part in a robust selection process that includes a formal application, one-on-one interviews, group evaluations and background checks. Most of our interns are currently attending university or have graduated. All candidates must have a dance background or share an appreciation for performing arts.
