Summary:

Open science refers to unhindered access to scientific information and data. Scientific knowledge should be opened up to communities without barriers of economic status, geographic borders, language, technological disparities or any other such factors. Open Science encompasses the process of dialogue, advocacy, strategic planning, policy making and cooperation to ensure free and equitable access to scientific data and knowledge. While the concept of Open Science has evolved from the concept of open access to research, it must today be considered in the context of developments in ICT applications, online research communities and communication. Increasingly the concept of Open Science is increasingly supported by policy makers worldwide who see in it benefits for the conduct of research and for global challenges to be addressed.  In this scenario, it is imperative also for scientific communities to focus on strategic issues in achieving the objectives of Open Science. With this in view the basic objective of this proposed session on 'Strategies towards Open Science' is to explore and leverage the ongoing work on Open Science Policies and strategies including efforts of OECD, UNESCO, CODATA, ICSU World Data System among several others. The session aims to involve stakeholders such as worldwide experts on Open Science, data producers, data managers, policy makers and academia involved and contributing to Open Science.
