In the Beginning

The current Iranian calendar, the Solar Hijri, is the product of a succession of calendars invented or used for over two millennia in Iran (Persia). One of the longest chronological records in human history, the Iranian calendar has been modified time and again during its history to suit administrative, climatic, and religious purposes.

The Solar Hijri calendar is also the official calendar of Afghanistan. Each of the twelve months corresponds with a zodiac sign. The first six months have 31 days, the next five have 30 days, and the last month has 29 days in usual years but 30 days in leap years. The New Year's Day, called Nowruz, always falls on the March equinox, which this year was this past Monday, March 20th. (wiki)

From the Rabbis and Beyond…

Rav Ovadia Yosef z”l

Daf Bite  –

What level of mourning is appropriate when thinking about the destruction of the Temple?

Rabbi Yehoshua concluded that some level of mourning must be maintained, yet too much mourning would be a burden that the community could not shoulder. Therefore it is appropriate to follow the rulings of the Sages:

* When building a house, the house should be plastered, but a small area should be left unfinished.

* When preparing a meal, all food can be included, but a single dish should be left out.

* When a woman does her cosmetic treatments, she should leave out a small item.

The Gemara concludes with the statement that it is those people who recognize and mourn the destruction of Jerusalem who will merit seeing the city rebuilt, based on the passage in Sefer Yeshayahu (66:10). “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all you that love her; rejoice for joy with her, all you that mourn for her.”

(Daf Yomi from Steinsaltz.org; Ketubot 60a-b)

A story - of bread and butter

There was a farmer who sold every day a pound of butter to a baker. One day the baker decided to weigh the butter to see if he was getting the right amount, which he wasn’t. Angry about this, he took the farmer to court.

The judge asked the farmer if he was using any measure to weigh the butter. The farmer replied, “Your Honor, I am an old fashioned man. I don’t have a modern weight, but I do have a scale.”

The judge asked, “Then how do you weigh the butter?”

The farmer replied:

“YOUR HONOR, LONG BEFORE THE BAKER STARTED BUYING BUTTER FROM ME, I HAVE BEEN BUYING A POUND LOAF OF BREAD FROM HIM. EVERY DAY WHEN THE BAKER BRINGS THE BREAD, I PUT IT ON THE SCALE AND GIVE HIM THE SAME WEIGHT IN BUTTER...”

On the Parasha & Beyond…

Mila bəParasha - Aviv

This Tuesday is the first day of the month of Nisan, which in the Torah was known as the month of Aviv (sometimes transliterated as Abib.) For example, Shmot 13:4 states "This day you are going out in the the month of the Aviv": הַיּוֹם אַתֶּם יֹצְאִים בְּחֹדֶשׁ הָאָבִיב

While in modern Hebrew aviv means spring, in the Bible it meant young barley. We see this in the plague of hail (Shmot 9:31) "the barley was aviv": כִּי הַשְּׂעֹרָה אָבִיב. The barley was not damaged by hail because its stem was still young and soft. But then came the locust...

Parasha: Vayaqhel-Pəqude - Shemot (Exodus) 35:1-40:38

Historical Context: Bnei Israel's 40-year journey continues. Location: Against Har Sinai (Mount Sinai). Creation Time: 2448 (1476 bce).

Parashort: Vayakhel: Moshe assembles Bnei Yisrael, reiterates to them the commandment to observe the Shabbat and conveys God's instructions regarding the making of the Mishkan (Tabernacle). Large quantities of materials were donated by the community. The chief architect and craftsman were appointed.

Pekudei: A further description of the Tabernacle's vessels, furniture and clothing is given. The dedication ceremonies are begun. (Torah Productions)

Maftir: The Torah reading of Parah (Numbers 19:1-22) is added to the weekly reading. Parah details the laws of the "Red Heifer" and the process by which a person rendered ritually impure by contact with a dead body was purified.

Haftarat Hahodesh – Yehezkel (Ezekiel) 45:18-46:15

Haftit: Ezekiel’s Prophecy regarding the Messianic dedication services in the 3rd Temple. This Haftarah takes place in the future. The prophet Ezekiel speaks of the time that the 3rd and Final Bait Hamikdash (Holy Temple) will be standing.  Prior to the beginning of our Haftarah, Ezekiel discusses the 12 tribes' division in the land of Israel. (See pictures). Ezekiel's prophecy explains how the Nassi will supervise the karbanos (sacrifices) in the 3rd Bait Hamikdash. In that time there will be a Levite portion and a portion for the Mashiah. (haftorahman)

Connection to Parasha: This Shabbat’s Haftara is the last of the 4 special Haftarot read before Pesach (Passover). They are Shekalim, Zechor, Parah & Hahodesh. This special haftara is a prophecy regarding the Paschal Offering that will be brought during the Messianic Era, reflecting the theme of Shabbat Hahodesh Torah reading—Moses' command to the Israelites in Egypt to prepare and bring the Paschal lamb. (chabad).

Speechless in the Parasha: Vayaqhel-Pəqude

From which tribe was Bezalel? From which was Aholiav? From which tribes were the other builders of the Tabernacle?

Biblical Quiz: Vayaqhel-Pəqude

All: The month of Nisan has three names:

Kids: Who built the first Temple – Beth haMikdash?

Youth: What is the meaning of his name?

Adults: How old was he when he was crowned?

Experts: What was his yearly income in today’s dollars?

About the Parasha

 1. Naso is the longest single parsha.

    2. Matot-Mas`ei is the longest double parsha.

3. When Vayaqhel-Pəqude is read on either Shabbat Para or Shabbat Hahodesh, the "extra piece" from the second sefer makes it longer than Matot-Mas`ei.

4. The maftir for Para is slightly longer than the maftir for Hahodesh (by 2 pəsuqim and a few lines in the sefer Torah).  5. So Vayaqhel-Pəqudei and Para is the longest reading of the yearş

6. Since Vayaqhel-Pəqudei is ALWAYS accompanied by either Para or Hahodesh, it is ALWAYS a longer reading than Matot-Mas`ei even though the actual double parasha is shorter.

Jewish Month - The Month of Nisan

"Hashem said to Moshe and Aharon in the Land of Egypt, 'This month shall be for you the beginning of the months; it shall be for you the first of the months of the year.'" (Shemot, 12:1-2).

The Zodiac sign of Nisan is the טלה - "kid," the young goat, that animal which was worshipped in Egypt, but which the Jewish People were commanded to sacrifice as the Pesach sacrifice.

The first day of Nissan was and always remains a historic day for the Jewish nation. It was the day when the people received their first commandment as a nation:

Sanctify the New Moon!

Rega’ shel Ivrit -

Rating, rating, rating. We always hear and talk about ratings.

A rating is the evaluation or assessment of something, in terms of quality - as with a critic rating a novel; quantity - as with an athlete being rated by his or her statistics of performance; or some combination of both.(wiki)

We can hear in Hebrew someone saying: “Haseret kibel ahala rating - the movie received a great rating!” or “rating gavoha - high rating.”

In Hebrew “rating” is מִדְרוּג - midrug. The Nebrew definition for midrug is:

מִדְרוּג הוא אומדן של שיעור הצופים בטלוויזיה בתכנית מסוימת על פי מדגם. המדרוג משמש גם בכלי תקשורת אחרים.

Promise that you will start using it?!

Riddle Solved

As of 2010, there were approximately 400,000 types of flowering plant species in the world, according to The Guardian. More than 600,000 plant names were deleted due to discoveries of duplicate species upon further examination by botanists. The repeat 600,000 plant names were a result of monikers and subtle differences within one plant species, according to Phys.org. For example, the tomato had 760 different names.
