Dear Friend,
At last I too have come here, to this expansive capital city – a pity I am not a younger man.
It goes without saying, of course, that I, as a Hungarian painter, must perforce look you up; after all, have we not been next-door neighbours for years? In the Museum of Fine Arts [in Budapest], to the right of your celebrated portrait of the Pope [4509], hangs my “Mother and Child”.[2]
So please be so good as to let me know when you can see me and

I do ask that it be as soon as possible, since I do not intend to stay here long because sadly I am not in a position to be able to enjoy this splendid English culture for much longer and I would like to go back home soon.

Tisztelt barátom,
Végre én is eljöttem ide ebbe a nagyszabású fővárosba, kár, hogy nem fiatalabb koromban.
Hogy mint magyar festőművész fel kell Tégedet keresnem az magától értetődik, mert nem hiába vagyunk a szépművészeti múzeumban szomszédok sok évek óta, a híres Pápa képed mellett jobb oldalon lóg az én „anya és gyermeke” című képem.
Tehát légy oly szíves és értesíts, hogy mikor fogadhatsz és

igen kérlek, minél előbb, mert nem szándékazom [sic] sokáig itten maradni, mert sajnos nem vagyok abban a helyzetben, hogy tovább élvezhessem ezt a kiváló angol kultúrát, viszont szeretnék hamarosan visszatérni.

Róbert Wellmann (1866–1946), Hungarian painter, trained at the Mintarajziskola in Budapest under Bertalan Székely, and the Munich Academy. Worked for some time in Germany, Italy, Holland and England. Exhibited in Budapest, Berlin and Munich. Known particularly for his meticulous drawings.

[1] The London telephone number of the Hungarian sculptor Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl (1884-1975), who had taken a studio in Hammersmith. The fact of it being written here suggests that the date of this letter must be the summer of 1933, which is when Strobl wrote to de László giving his telephone number.
[2] De László’s portrait of Pope Leo XIII [4509] is still hanging in the Magyar Nemzeti Galéria [Hungarian National Gallery], inv. no. 3206. Wellmann’s mother Mother and Child (1897), in the collection of the Hungarian National Gallery, inv. no. 1845, is currently not on display.
