This tile commemorates a family journey, beginning at the turn of the 20th century with our four grandparents, the Cataneses and Cirinciones, who for economic reasons, traveled from Sicily to the Pittsburgh area, and back to Sicily.
Our parents, Charles Catanese (1908-1975) and Genie (nee Cirincione) Catanese (1912-2001), born in the Pittsburgh area, returned with their parents to their hometown of Campofelice de Roccella, Sicily during their formative years. They married in Sicily but the Italian political climate preceding World War II prompted their return to the United States in the 1930s, initially to California but eventually settling in Pittsburgh. Here they raised four children and worked in a business they owned with their extended family, the Shadyside Market at 5509 Walnut Street, from the late 1940s in the early 1950s. After selling their business, the family remained on Walnut Street in Shadyside, becoming
longtime residents and real estate owners, viewing many neighborhood changes from their second floor home on 5512 Walnut Street. Many of their large extended family live and work in the Pittsburgh area today.
With this tile, we thank our parents for their selfless dedication and enormous personal sacrifices for the benefit of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family and food, in that order were central to our parent’s existence, traditions their descendants continue to practice and value. We deeply appreciate the welcome and blessings that Pittsburgh provided our family.
