Preparation Steps

- Set the date & choose location(s) that make sense for your community:

- Host prep call with canvassers
- Split into teams
- Assign different areas to canvas

Day of Canvassing
- Check in with the group & practice
- Establish a meetup location
- Distribute flyer packets
- Break into pairs, practice, and give feedback to each other
- Canvas
- Spend 1-2 hours canvassing the community
- Introduce yourselves & hand out flyers
- Make sure to emphasize talking points (listed below)
- Note every business/place/person you interact with
- Briefly describe how the conversation went, their response, & what flyer languages are needed
- Track Responses
- Note every business/place/person you interact with

- Debrief as a Group
- Check in how the canvassing went
- What went well/what could be improved
- Did you talk to anyone who was interested in further resources/training?
- Collect leftover flyers for next time

Relationship Building
- Initial Canvassing: Establish Connection
- Introduce yourselves
- Hand out flyers and information
- Mention Talking Points
- Remember names: try to establish connections not only with managers & store owners but with the rest of the staff/workers
- Follow-up Canvassing
- Try to have the same people canvas the same areas
- Re-introduce yourselves, mentioning when you were there last
- Check in on how things are going & if there have been any ICE sightings
- Ask how you can support their business & the community
- Gauge interest in further training/events
- Building Relationships
- Maintain consistent presence in community
- Support the business: buy their food/merchandise
- Organize community events
- Ex: karaoke, tabling, safety
- Facilitate relationship building amongst the community
- Connect with neighborhood Leaders interested in canvassing & more localized rapid responses
Talking Points
- Private Spaces:
- You don’t have to allow agents into private areas of the business without a judicial warrant
- Kitchens, staff rooms, and storage can be private
- Hang a Visible Sign that denotes Private Area
- Judicial Warrant
- Has to be paper signed by a JUDGE giving the officer permission to enter your home
- An administrative warrant issued by an immigration official (including an immigration judge) is not a valid warrant and DOES NOT grant authority to enter private area
- Share Hotline Numbers and Personal Contact Information
- Offer personal phone number to share any ICE presence with Rapid Response networks
- Emphasize Hotline numbers from flyers in case of ICE presence
Canvassing Supply Tips

- Your trained volunteer badge
- Mini notebooks
- Pens
- Binder clips
- Clip boards
- Tape or thumb tacks (for posting flyers on doors, windows, or bulletin boards)
- Fully charged cell phone
- Water and/or snacks if needed
- Weather appropriate clothing
