Unhealthy Couples fight Dirty vs Healthy Couples fight Fair

Rules for a Fair Fight  James 1:19-21

(For Christ Followers)

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters:   James 1:19

Rule 1 – Listen Carefully

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen…    James  1:19

Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.  Proverbs 18:13

Fools have no interest in understanding; they only want to air their own opinions.  Proverbs 18:2                               Listen & Restate

Rule 2 – Choose Your Words

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speakJames 1:19

Too much talk leads to sin.  Be sensible and keep your mouth shut.  Proverbs 10:19

Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.  Proverbs 21:23

Ask Yourself:  Should it be said? & Should it be said now?

Wisdom Not Talking Tips

1.     Don’t Call Names

2.     Don’t raise your voice

3.     Don’t get historical

4.     Don’t generalize, never & always

5.     Don’t threaten divorce

6.     Don’t say “Pastor Says”

Rules 3 – Righteous Anger Only

9 Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20 Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.  James 1:19-20

26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.  Ephesians 4:26-27

Rule 4 – Be Eager to Forgive

31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.  Ephesians 4:31-32

Final Round – The Goal is not to win but Grow in Holiness

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.  Ephesians 5:25-26
