‘Preparing each child for their future in an ever-changing world’

CARE - COURAGE - RESPECT - RESPONSIBILITY

Wednesday 4th January 2017

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.

Topic

This term the children will be continuing with the topic ‘Invaders and Settlers’ but will now be focusing on the Vikings and their invasion into Britain. The children will be learning about why the Vikings chose to invade England and whether they were ‘raiders or settlers’. They will also learn about the struggle for power between the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons – whom they studied last term. Alongside this work the children will also be learning about the Celtic tribes and the rebellions that took place after the invasion of the Romans, with a particular focus on Boudicca. They will be working to understand why the initial rebellion was successful and decide whether Boudicca would still be considered a powerful figure today.

Homework

The children will continue to receive either SPAG or Maths homework on a Friday which we will go through the following Friday. The children are still expected to complete at least 40 minutes reading each week and their diaries will be checked. We want to encourage independence and therefore we remind the children that it is their responsibility to take their diaries home to be signed and bring them in with all of their reading signed off.

This term year 5 will continue to take part in ‘Let’s Get Cooking’ on a Tuesday afternoon. The children will be split into their three groups and group one will start on Tuesday the 10th January. Any parents or carers that would like to help out with this, please contact the office. Any help you can offer even for just one week would be greatly appreciated.

Please pop in to arrange an appointment to see us if you have any concerns.

Many thanks from your Year 5 team
