HISTORY of TECHNOLOGY ASSIGNMENT

Your goal is to profile one piece of computer related technology by examining its history. In other words, you are to look into any ‘SMART’ device and tell me how it evolved to its current state.

The following is a list of suggested topics. Should you wish to choose an alternative topic, have it approved by Mr. Couprie before you begin.

History and Technology Part 1

A timeline of your topic’s development

Introduction Slides (1-2 slides)

Title and names of partners
Introduce your topic by answering these questions in a sentence each:

What is it used for? Serious business? Entertainment? Both?
Why are you interested in this topic?
How important is it to your life OR to who is it most important
A picture of the item.

To get up to 80% - Steps in History (5 Steps for EACH partner)

Each group member is responsible for finding a separate website which has some kind of timeline of the development of your topic. I suggest searching for “history of ___” or the “evolution of ____”. You will each use your website as the basis for the next instructions.

Each group member is responsible for creating 5 Steps in the History of your item, each one representing an important step in the history of your topic’s development.

When choosing your steps:

Aim for 1 step per decade (2 steps per decade for partners). If this is not possible for your choice of technology, that is ok.
Cover multiple companies with a variety of innovations if possible.
Use at least 2 sources of information

For each step in history:

Copy and Pastable Info

The title of the slide should contain the year (or era) and the name of the device.
Did it contain a processor? If so, what system(s) did that processor control?

Can't find this info? Say 'could not find' and then you will not lose marks

Explain why it was a big leap in technology. You can choose one of the following exact sentences or write one that is similar.

The ___ was the first ___ to ___
It had a ____ which was unique because ___
This was the first time someone was able to ______

List the company or inventor name. Or say ‘not available’
Include a relevant picture

Please make this section separate from the above points so that I can tell where the copying and pasting ends and your own thoughts begin.

To get 90% - Putting the History into Perspective

Go back to each of your history slides and add a section that says “This year in history…” Then add a sentence about something big that happened in pop culture that year. For example, it could be about the biggest movie or song of the year, an important sporting event, etc.

To get 100% - Advertising the Future

Partnerships must EACH do this for the marks. If you are in a partnership, place your name in the bottom right corner so I know who made it.
Make a prediction regarding the next big leaps in technology your item will undergo in the future. It could be a big leap coming next year or not for 50 years . (Be thoughtful and creative! Don’t just say better graphics and faster).
Then based on that prediction, add ONE NEW SLIDE and create an advertisement for a product with that new feature. Consider a Billboard ad or some sort of web ad.

You can use existing brand names or make up your own.
Include several images and text blocks
Remember this is an advertisement. Be sure to show off your ‘big leap in technology’.
Use small print at the bottom of your ad to explain in 2 or 3 sentences what this leap is/does.
