Jesse F. Core attended school in Ford City, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. He graduated in 1937 from Penn State and went on to work for Pittsburgh Coal Company from 1938-1947.
He served as Chief Engineer for Island Creek Coal Company in West Virginia; in 1951 he joined U.S. Steel’s Frick District in Uniontown as First Mining Engineer, then Chief Engineer, and later General Superintendent in 1955. In 1958, he became Vice President in charge of coal operations for U.S. Steel. He was a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. He was Co-Founder and First Chairman of the Keystone Bituminous Coal Association; Chairman of Coal Division of the American Mining Congress from 1959 to early 1970’s. Jesse Core received the Erskine Ramsay award from the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1971 for his contributions to the general improvement of development of mining personnel. He served as industry member of President Carter’s Coal Commission in 1978.
Margaret M. Core was born in Fayette City, Pennsylvania, in 1915 and attended Mt. Mercy College (now Carlow College). Margaret became an active member of the Pennsylvania Western section of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and continued her membership for 35 years. She served as Chairman of the Scholarship Loan Fund and made many trips to present the Howard M. Eavenson awards and Leslie E. and Elizabeth W. Young Scholarship Grants to area colleges. She raised two daughters and delighted in her three grandchildren.
