How do I register to vote?
- Make sure you are registered to vote at YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS by October 21! Register to vote or check your registration status. Note: your ballot cannot be forwarded to you. Make sure your address is correct for where you will be living in October.
- Same day voter registration is available! If you haven’t registered to vote by October 21, visit the County Registrar of Voters, during the 14 days prior to, and including, Election Day - or a polling site on election day - to conditionally register and vote using a provisional ballot. More information from the California Secretary of State.
- People aged 16 or 17 may pre-register to vote. You will need your California driver’s license or identification card number, or you may print, sign, and mail in your application.
- Review the state and local ballot guides. All voters will receive their state and local sample ballot guide booklet in the mail (or via email if you chose that when you registered) on September 29. Also check out the official California voting guide and local measures guide. Review SanDiego350’s ballot measure recommendations.
- Mail-in ballots will be sent to every registered voter on October 5 and should be received within the week after that. Track the status of your ballot, and if you haven’t received it by Oct 21, call the Registrar of Voters (858-565-5800) to request another.

How do I cast my ballot?
- Send in your ballot by mail by October 31! We recommend sending your ballot early so it is counted on Election Night, rather than weeks later. No postage is required!
- To be counted, your ballot will need to be postmarked by November 5 at the latest. It would then be expected to be received by the Registrar of Voters by Friday, November 12 to be counted.
- Follow the instructions on your mail ballot to mark your vote. Then, sign and date the outside of your return envelope. If you forget, you can fill out a form to send your signature.
- Drop off your ballot at a polling site by Tuesday, November 5! Ballot drop boxes are open from Oct 8 to Nov 5. Find your drop off location at sdvote.com or at this link.
- Visit a polling site between October 7 and November 5.
- Early voting is available at the Registrar’s Office beginning October 7, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
- Select vote centers and the Registrar’s office are open daily October 26 through November 4, 8am to 5pm.
- Over 200 polling sites and the Registrar’s office will be open daily Nov 2 through Nov 4, 8am to 5pm.
- All vote centers, official ballot drop boxes, and the Registrar’s office will be open from 7am to 8pm on Tuesday, November 5, the final day of voting.
- Find your closest polling location at sdvote.com or at this link.
- Tip: Mail Ballot Voters who decide to vote at their polling place should bring their Mail Ballot; if you do not, a provisional ballot will be issued but not counted until County officials verify you are registered to vote and have not already voted.
