Summary

Right now thousands of Americans have taken to the streets to protest the continued assault and devaluation on/of the lives of black Americans across the entire country. Sparked by concurrent murders at the hands of police of two black Americans, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky and George Floyd in Minnesota, these followed the lynching style killing of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia. Not to mention, the disregard for black trans women’s well being. This is all happening in the midst of a pandemic. Many of us can choose to stay safe in our homes during quarantine, and some of us are vulnerable and unable to participate in Nationwide protests. I’ve put together this list of ways we can all support the families of victims and protesters throughout the country.

Bail Projects/Reform

The Advancement Project

Advancement Project is a next generation, multi-racial civil rights organization. Rooted in the great human rights struggles for equality and justice, we exist to fulfill America’s promise of a caring, inclusive and just democracy. We use innovative tools and strategies to strengthen social movements and achieve high impact policy change.

The modern Movement for racial justice needs you! Advancement Project reinforces and grows the capacity of today's grassroots activists and the local organizers fighting to build power for communities of color. This moment of unprecedented attacks on civil rights requires your attention, your efforts, and also your financial support.

This is a full-scale platform, consider funding their multifaceted efforts.

The Bail Project

The Bail Project™ National Revolving Bail Fund is on a mission to combat mass incarceration and reshape the pretrial system in the United States. 100% of online donations are used to bring people home. Since bail money comes back to us when cases close, we're able to recycle every dollar donated at least twice per year.

Philadelphia Community Bail Fund

The mission of the Philadelphia Community Bail Fund is to end cash bail in Philadelphia. Until that day comes, we post bail for residents of Philadelphia who cannot afford to pay for their freedom. We work to bring to light the inequities of the use of cash bail in Philadelphia and advocate for the abolition of bail and pretrial detention in our city.

We know that Philadelphia jails are filled with people who spend weeks, months, or even years incarcerated while waiting for court, simply because they do not have the money to pay for their own freedom. Pretrial detention leads to higher rates of conviction, the pressure to accept guilty pleas, longer sentences, and traumatic disruption of lives including loss of jobs, housing, mental health supports, and devastated families. By paying bail, our fund supports individuals in remaining at home with their families and communities while fighting their cases.

Peoples City Council Freedom Fund – Los Angeles

As the mayor and city council have sought to increase the LAPD's budget during a pandemic, and as police around the country continue to kill innocent people of color, we have taken to the street to protest the funding of state sanctioned murder. This fund will go towards:

Legal support, bail, fines, and court fees for arrested protesters

-Medical bills and transportation for injured protesters

-Medical supplies and PPE for Community Medics

-Direct monetary support to Black Lives Matter Los Angeles

-Supplies and support for protesters and organizers (megaphones, pamphlets, PPE, etc.)

-Direct monetary support to National Lawyers Guild and other groups assisting protesters with legal support. They are a little less than $100k from their goal of one million dollars!

The Louisville Community Bail Fund

To build transformative communities, we must perform transformative acts of liberation. Cash bail is one of the aspects of the criminal justice system that keeps communities wrapped up in systemic slavery and in debt. The need to end cash bail is not new. Thanks to the Ferguson Uprising and the Kalief Browder story, we know that the bail system creates financial barriers for those who find themselves against the criminal justice system. One of the largest barriers is not being able to afford bail.

The Louisville Community Bail Fund exists to not only bail out folks, but provide post-release support to get them from jail, fed, and to a situation of safety. LCBF also maintains a focus on preventative measures for those targeted by law enforcement and threatened with incarceration. While we work with national networks, we are also one of the only bail funds that rely entirely on support from individuals in our social justice community.

The Minnesota Freedom Fund

There is nothing “normal” about cash bail - the United States and the Philippines are the only two countries in the world where someone has to put up cash to avoid being imprisoned before their trial. We stand against cash bail as unjust and identify wealth-based discrimination as a vehicle for the criminal justice system to target populations for structural violence. People of color and immigrants face higher rates of arrest, harsher sentencing, and disparities in the setting of bail compared to white citizens.

The Brooklyn Bail Fund

SUPPORT EMERGENCY BOND OUTS!

Thousands of lives are in imminent danger in ICE detention centers across the country. The COVID-19 crisis has increased the urgency of freeing all incarcerated people from detention, where access to medical care and sanitary facilities is severely limited. BCBF has instituted emergency procedures to identify those most at-risk during this crisis, particularly the elderly, people with underlying medical conditions and those facing imminent deportation. While we continue to demand that they #freethemALL, and we mean ALL, we're doing everything we can to free as many of our immigrant neighbors as possible NOW.

Your support in any amount today helps us free as many people as possible, as soon as possible.

Black Trans Lives

According to the HRC, 2019 alone saw at least 26 transgender or gender non-conforming people fatally shot or killed by other violent means. We say at least because too often these stories go unreported -- or misreported.

Already in 2020 twelve transgendered people have been brutally murdered. The situation is urgent, we must advocate and educate. For that reason, and that I am one person editing this guide, some of the entries will be brief with links to their stories. I want to be able to include as many individual lives lost as possible, in addition to paths to justice through our support of advocacy groups. I without a doubt value the lives of trans folx, I just want that known.

Brought to my attention my the legendary Lina Bradford, the mission of the BTFA Collective is to connect the community of black trans women and non-binary femmes in the arts & to build power among ourselves.

Support for Iyanna Dior

Iyanna Dior was brutally beaten by a group of young black men following a fender bender. There are a lot of details surrounding the violent attack, so I have chosen to link to an article in Elle Magazine that states, According to accounts on social media, the beating took place on June 1 after a so-called "fender bender." The video appears to show Dior, 21, and an unidentified Black man having a disagreement outside of a convenience store before a large group begins beating Dior and yelling transphobic slurs. There are anywhere from 15 to 30 assailants, who are reportedly mostly cisgender males. A crowd around Dior and her attackers forms, with no one stepping in to aide her. Eventually Dior breaks from the crowd of onlookers to duck behind the register while a store employee tries to de-escalate the crowd. The video of the attack is disturbing and may trigger and incite trauma, so it's not linked or embedded here. Read the entire article

*At the time of publishing there seems to be some confusion as to how to donate to Iyanna (there were some fake accounts sadly). I have reached out to Iyanna directly to hear from her where she would like to receive donations.

Donations: I imagine donations will be for medical expenses. I feel concern for her because, as per the Elle article, the following day had come and she had not yet sought medical attention. I believe she has suffered dental damage. I will post an update on IG and FB when/if I hear back from Iyanna.

Homeless Black Trans Women Fund

Update: As of June 3, 2020 HBTWF has crossed the million dollar threshold! Right. On!!! Power to the People! The organizers have reached out to existing Trans organizations in Atlanta to prepare them to be a positive funded force in their community!!

This is a fund for the community of Black Trans women that live in Atlanta and are sex workers and/or homeless.

So far, we have been able to get 5 girls a cell phone, gotten them hotel rooms during vulnerable times, and got 2 housing in a rooming house. This fund also covers food and necessities. Atlanta has almost no resources for Transgender women, so I took matters into my own hands.

Color of Change

Color of Change’s itinerary of action will leave you breathless! Their scope is wide and far reaching for the advancement of black and brown people in so many aspects touching our lives. Thankfully, their ability to organize, research, and serve notice to organizations, corporations, and politicians is something we haven’t had before their inception, yet desperately needed. If there is a matter that draws you to them, you will exit their pages feeling fully informed. They are an action organization, they need you to show up, sign petitions and spread awareness in your circles. They make that very easy too. Color Of Change helps people respond effectively to injustice in the world around us. As a national online force driven by 1.7 million members, we move decision makers in corporations and government to create a more human and less hostile world for Black people, and all people. Until justice is real.

Criminal Justice Reform

Dream Defenders

Born out of the tragedy of Trayvon Martin’s murder, Dream Defenders are a coalition of young folks of color who are unapologetically taking on the system down in Florida. Their projects include keeping eyes on states’ most powerful position, Attorney General, delivering report cards on performance and keeping their communities informed. They are a people-funded membership based organization. Following the trial that set George Zimmerman free, the group organized a 30 day sit-in to end Stand Your Ground laws. Although unsuccessful, they have not been deterred with taking on a number of projects throughout Florida that reach beyond Criminal Justice Reform. They have every intention of growing to become a national “squadd.”

Know Your Rights Campaign

Colin Kaepernick began this campaign to educate and empower Black and Brown communities the navigation skills they will need in an unfair system of justice. More than simply knowing their rights, the camps the organization sets up in several cities and growing, are about empowering communities with the tools they need to navigate a system designed to work against them and not form them.

Our mission is to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities through education, self-empowerment, mass-mobilization and the creation of new systems that elevate the next generation of change leaders.

Justice and Memorial Funds

Official George Floyd Memorial Fund, and George Floyd Family Fund

https://www.gofundme.com/f/georgefloyd

Organized by George Floyd’s sister, Philonise. This fund is established to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist our family in the days to come as we continue to seek justice for George.  A portion of these funds will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund.

Gofundme for Darnella Frazier

I received a few requests from readers to seek out information on Darnella Frazier. She is the minor who recorded the confrontation and ultimate murder of George Floyd, while other officers watched. For anyone this would have been a traumatic experience, much less a young kid. Unfortunately, love and support isn’t the only thing Darnella has received. She is being trolled and bullied, immediately accused of doing it for the attention and potential to monetize. Much worse, people say a child should have done something to stop the officer (while other officers stood keeping folks back). This is utter nonsense. Darnella has been experiencing social anxiety as you might imagine.

A person by the name of Mica Cole Kamenski, who was a stranger to Darnella’s family up until a few days ago, knew that something had to be done to support her. Through a network, they were put in touch. Darnella being a minor, the gofundme must have an adult, Frazier’s mother, as the benefactor. What the family does with this money is their business and theirs alone. And I am sure they will incur expenses come trial time.

“You can’t put a price on a child’s spirit. This fund is to support the healing and the restoration of hope for Darnella Frazier —whatever that means to her. There are many places in the movement where your resources are needed. This is one of them. Thank you.“

I Run with Maud

Organized for the benefit of Ahmaud Arbery’s mother. ALL donations are going towards the fight for making sure justice is served and to ensure that Ahmaud's mother has the resources they will need.  Having to grieve and deal with getting justice, are already two major burdens.  The goal is to help lighten the load by eliminating the financial burden as much as possible.

Justice for Breonna Taylor

Breonna Taylor was killed while sleeping in her bed. (below you will see her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker’s gofundme) In the early hours of March 13, 2020, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) used force-ably entered the apartment of Breonna Taylor, where Kenneth Walker and Breonna lay asleep. The police were there to serve a warrant on a person that did not live at the address and who was already in police custody.

“The community has been reaching out in support of Bree’s family and wanting to donate to the cause. First off, we are SO THANKFUL for EVERYONE standing up for justice and saying her name! We’re not stopping until we truly get justice! All of you are such a blessing! It’s amazing!”

Justice for Kenneth Walker

For the defense of Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker. The 3 officers of the LMPD claim to have announced themselves, however, neither Kenneth, Breonna, nor any of the neighbors heard them do so. Kenneth, in self-defense, fired shots believing the police to be intruders, with the intention of protecting himself and Breonna. The police fired over 20 shots into the small apartment, killing Breonna. She was unarmed and died from 8 gunshot wounds. Kenneth's life was also endangered, but fortunately, he survived.

Health and Aid

The Northstar Health Collective

We are a small group of people that respond to enormous events.  As you might imagine, we can become very strapped for resources. We would appreciate any help you could give in the following ways.

The North Star Health Collective was created in response to the Republican National Convention (RNC) in St. Paul September 1-4, 2008. We coordinated and provided health care services, resources, and training to ensure the safety of our community over the weeks before, during, and after the RNC. Thousands of community members and families attended protests against the RNC.

Going forward, we continue to provide health care and support to a diverse array of causes.  Membership is open to all who share our principles of unity and follow our guidelines for membership.

Continuing to add to the list! A big thank you to everyone who has shared this list or chimed in with additional resources. Like many of us, I am stuck at home but desperately want to participate in what has quickly escalated into massive social action across the country and very powerfully all over the globe people are taking to the streets in a skin chilling show of solidarity. We are not alone in our fight for social justice. Take this list and use it as your resource. You will see this list grow to provide an array of resources for empowering you to take some kind of action, even if from home. It will also serve as a place for educational resources. First and foremost, this is a National dialogue that won’t be quieted again! You have to arm yourself with knowledge. When we’re speaking with friends or on social media reposting… we have to say more than “Black Lives Matters.” You have to speak to the specifics. In other words, this list will also serve as an aid to being “Woke!”

Editorial Note: Although I’m putting this together journal style. I added Darnella Frazier’s gofundme just below George Floyd entries.

Black Visions Collective (BLVC)

Out of Minnesota… believes in a future where all Black people have autonomy, safety is community-led, and we are in right relationship within our ecosystems.Since 2017, Black Visions Collective, has been putting into practice the lessons learned from organizations before us in order to shape a political home for Black people across Minnesota. We aim to center our work in healing and transformative justice principles, intentionally develop our organizations core “DNA” to ensure sustainability, and develop Minnesota’s emerging Black leadership to lead powerful campaigns. By building movements from the ground up with an integrated model, we are creating the conditions for long term success and transformation.

BYP100

Founded in 2013, BYP100 (Black Youth Project 100) is a member-based organization of Black youth activists creating justice and freedom for all Black people. BYP100 was, at one point, just a hashtag for the 2013 “Beyond November Movement Convening” developed through the vision and leadership of Cathy Cohen.

BYP100 actions cover a lot of ground. While taking on their national agenda, local chapters also address a myriad of issues close to home. In New York, they have a Swipe it Forward campaign, where members gather at subway turnstiles to swipe black and brown folks into the subway system for free. They were also responsible for leading the effort to have the statue of J. Marion Sims removed from Central Park. Sims was the father of modern gynecology. Black women were his laboratory slaves, used for gruelish experiments against their consent and will. (want to learn even more about this abhorrent man in an artful way? See the work of Doreen Garner.)

BYP100 has local chapters in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, D.C., Detroit, Durham, Jackson, Milwaukee, New Orleans, New York. Is your state not listed? Check out their National agenda’s She Safe, We Safe campaign, or if you're a black or brown youth or youth leader, reach out to them about getting BYP100 actions started in your community and/or become a member by emailing membership@byp100.org!

Forced Trajectory Project

Forced Trajectory Project (FTP) is a long-term multimedia project that began in 2009 documenting the rippling effects police violence has on communities beginning with the families who have lost their loved ones to police murder. Utilizing moving pictures, stills, and sound, the project’s goal is to paint an intimate and accurate portrait of the “forced trajectory” these family members find themselves on after their loved one is killed.

M4BL in DEFENSE OF BLACK LIFE

The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) was formed in 2014 as a platform for Black organizations to coalesce around a bevy of ideas and with them create a unified strategy to address political conditions. Find your way to sign up for text message alerts, stay up to date on their calls to action like the Rising Majority which organizes around community action to support progressive candidates like Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. But it is their current mobilizing efforts to which I direct your attention.

The M4BL Week of Action in Defense of Black Lives, is organized on their website by day. You will also see their guidance on color coding which categorizes each task at hand by level of risk. Tweets, phonejams, these tasks by day, give you the opportunity to use your social media streams in a coordinated effort. And higher risk actions like creating an art installation (I know there are a ton of artists flipping through this guide), and of course safely organizing outside of your home. Please visit them ASAP, WEEK OF ACTION is already in motion and there is something for all of us to do regardless of our level of self-imposed quarantine. Remember, your actions are supporting multiple organizations collaborating through M4BL!

Knowledge Base

I am aware that this guide has been viewed and used by our allies of the Movement. So this knowledge base is for you and it is also for all of us looking to learn and share knowledge. Knowledge-bases put together by the people are crucial to the success of this Movement. And why? Because the bulk of our public education has been deliberately spreading misinformation. An ahistorical perspective, that has always and willingly glossed over any self-incriminating facts in our country’s short history. From accounts of indigenous people’s genocide to the history of Slavery, Jim Crow, and the decades that have followed the Civil Rights Act, if you have never taken a college-level course on the history of indigenous people or Black American history you do not have all of the facts. If you don’t understand exactly how modern-day prisons are an extension of slavery, this and other knowledge-bases pertaining to our Movement are for you. If you learn about, as an example, Peonage and how the steel industry (which replaced Cotton as America’s leading industry) used this form of Black prison labor to advance the production of Steel manufacturing while dividing and weakening poor white labor’s ability to demand higher wages, you will see the long history of government and private corporations collaborating to maintain wealth and power, and how these same practices are used in contemporary times.
