What is Starfield?

The biggest, most epic Science Fiction thing you could possibly imagine;

The be all end all Science Fiction game we have all wanted to play

-Todd Howard

For those completely unfamiliar (this is probably a poor introduction to this game but oh well), Starfield is the next game in the works at Bethesda Game Studios, the Studio well known for their Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. It is their first new original IP in 25 years, since the creation of the elder scrolls in 1994 and has a release date set for 11/11/2022 for Xbox and Pc (Hahaha sike, the game was delayed to 2023 while I was creating this. As disheartening as this seems, Bethesda games often have a lot of really cool cut content, so hopefully this extra time will mean less cuts and compromises). In typical Bethesda fashion, we know very little about the game relatively close to release, but hopefully despite the delay expect an info blowout at Microsoft's showcase this summer on June 12th. An interpolation based on their last two games could mean a teaser livestream at the end of may ending with a new trailer to advertise before the show, however with the indeterminate delay this is up in the air. Some key things that we know about the game.

  • Starfield will be a traditional Bethesda single player focused game
  • “Think Skyrim in space in all the right ways” - Todd
  • The game has a “NASA-punk” aesthetic, with ships, buildings, outfits, and the world being reminiscent of 1960s-70s NASA designs. This leads to a much more utilitarian and realistic style compared to many other science fiction universes.
  • The game takes place ~300 years in the future, around 2330, after a war between the two largest factions in the game, The United Colonies, an idealized form of a future space republic, and the Freestar collective, an individualist pioneering group that values personal freedom above all else.
  • The player character is one of the newest members of an organization called Constellation, described as “The last group of space explorers.”
  • Multiple planets to explore and at least 3 large cities, New Atlantis, Akila City, and Neon.

From everything we have heard about this game, it seems to be gearing up to be the most ambitious sandbox that Bethesda has attempted, and I can't wait to actually get to play in it. In the rest of the doc i'll be going through all the information we have gotten and where it comes from, and at the end going through all the concept art that we have gotten.

But why type all this?

(Please Feel free to ignore this rant lol)

Good question! When Oblivion was released, my father got the prima strategy guide gifted to him, and although I was too young to play it at the time, (I tried but got lost in the tutorial dungeon a few times, not sure how) I remember flipping through that massive tome and being awed by the sheer amount of things and pictures it contained. When I finally was able to get out of the sewers, and was greeted with the view of ayleid ruins across a lake with that peaceful music playing, the scale of it felt unreal.

I've played all of Bethesda’s games now since morrowind, and there is an underlying formula there with all of them that make them feel special to me. The world with it's massive scale. The freedom you have in exploring it. The details that that world has in it's locations. Being able to touch all the little objects in the world. The ease at which modders can change it. Their recipe for an open world is uniquely Bethesda, and all these little things make their open worlds feel special.

When I heard about the “Starfield” trademark in 2015, that word was everything this community knew. I grew up next to the Kennedy Space Center, and my family has worked with rockets since before the Apollo program. To say that I am a massive space geek would be an understatement, so a Bethesda game in space seemed like a wild unrealistic dream. Even still, with just that word, “Starfield,” unknown if it even was a Bethesda game studios game at all, mine and alot of others in the community brains went wild with the thought. After seeing fake leaks for so long, when it was finally officially shown It felt unreal.

Over nearly 4 years now we have been drip fed information about Starfield, which is a very long time to keep everything in your head. So partly as an exercise to myself to remind me of everything we’ve gotten and analyze it, and partly to provide a central source to everything,[1] I had the idea to create this doc and share it. So now, without further ado, let's get into it.

Official Announcement Teaser

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUobbpHERh8

A “teaser for the tone” of the game, the announcement teaser provides very few details, but still some information can be gleaned from it. It starts with a planet being illuminated by starlight, and for a brief moment in the bottom left you can see the word “Constellation” alongside the now iconic Constellation badge used on the first page of this doc. Constellation was not known at the time to be the name of our organization and was thought to possibly be the name of the ship that the camera was on. The community's idea of the logo also changed over time, at first being the general outline we get in the teaser, then a black and white version when an interview with a dev who was wearing a shirt with the logo on the sleeve[2], which confirmed the logo in the 2018 build leaks.

The centerpiece of this trailer is the space station (craft?) so let's look at that.

This unique looking station has a few discernible features: 4 large triangular solar panels, 4 airlocks, and outer walkway with someone walking on it, either using antigravity or magnetic boots, a central core of the station, and a truss area extending below. Lots of speculation about this station since it was all we really had for two years, but only one that I believe feels all but confirmed. A later image that appeared as the thumbnail to a video called “Welcome to Constellation” was able to be linked back to the station. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5-XwTd-fbE)

The center of the structure, which was originally thought to be a reactor or telescope or some type of machinery, appears to be this circular library. Given as this image is the thumbnail to “welcome to Constellation,” we can most likely assume that this is a Constellation station or headquarters. (Actual library image will be discussed later with other concept art)

The “2018 Build Leaks”

There is a set of leaded images that have been confirmed to be from Starfield. All of these images come from a 2018 early build and are collectively often referred to as such. Most of these are images of a character and a building on a flat testing plain, but there are also a few images of outfits and signage.

Link to imgur with compilation of these leaks: https://imgur.com/a/2ZyUZNt

Better sorted link here: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarfieldAlliance/comments/tv702w/ultimate_collection_of_all_leaked_Starfield/

Many of the images show the player character in a third person view, wearing the same suit as the 2021 teaser, likely our starting suit / Constellation standard suit like the vault suit in the Fallout games. Notably, the backpack the character has possibly houses a jetpack seeing the two nozzles pointing down, which may be used only for EVA movement (moving in zero g outside a spaceship) or also usable for short boosts on planets like in mass effect andromeda.

Most of the buildings feel to me like they are from some prefab set; either that they are for a settlement mode that likely will be carried over from Fallout 4, or that they are a construction set for Bethesda to construct outposts from themselves. We also have a few outfits in the collection, which give off a utilitarian, industrial aesthetic, which is consistent with the concept art we will get later.

The UI is fairly spartan and likely not final, with health and stamina, an outline of the weapon, and ammo and grenade count in the bottom right, and a static compass in the bottom left.

This compass was discussed a lot, but in brief: compass pointer at the top, a possible radar top left, a g(ravity?) meter top right, a circle with a semicircle filled in (maybe something to deal with the planet and it's orientation), a triangle with a 1 underneath, and an O2 and CO2 meter on the bottom. We will see iterations of this UI later in the 2021 trailer and the watch, so let's not dwell on the early leaked version too much.

Finally the spaceship, which again keeps a utilitarian, spartan design, like a ship designed to work and not look the best. It reminds me of the ships in The Expanse, particularly a quote by the main character; “Holden reflected, not for the first time, on how so much of the human sense of aesthetics had been formed in a time when sleek objects cut through the air. The Donnager would never move through anything thicker than interstellar gas, so curves and angles were a waste of space. The result was ugly.

In my opinion these ships are nice looking in their own way but to each their own. And based on the ship designs we see later, it feels like Starfield will sit in the middle of more sleek ships like some found in star wars and star citizen and the more realistic ships of the expanse

To me, the most enlightening part of these leaks is this set of essentially stickers that are to be put around structures / ships.

Going through the interesting things first the use of stowage not storage, indicates a more nautical influence to Starfields ships. Most of the other plain text are general ship / plane / science identifiers. Top left we have a fire port, a restricted access sign, and most importantly a “NO A-GRAV” warning, essentially confirming some type of anti gravity technology. We also have some faded signs, a medical cross, and a speedometer type thing with TEC under it. Through this leak we see two major (companies?) via AXION ENERGY and TEC.

One sign says “Read before use: 233 Stars”. Makes absolutely no sense but the most wild speculation would be that there are that many stars in the game, but why it would be on a warning sign doesn't make sense. Also makes mention of a Starfield Alliance, and Space Nation Alliance, things we haven't heard officially. Perhaps these are the early names for factions like the United Colonies?

Interviews

After the reveal in 2018, Todd did a lot of interviews between the next showing, with the interesting ideas and quotes summarized here. Also got some times where Pete heins, vp of marketing, talked about the game.

  • Was right below fallout in universes that they wanted to make.
  • Talked about and thought about for a very long time.
  • “We are uniquely positioned to pull this off.”
  • An iconic quote from Todd repeated at E3 2018. Possibly referring to their style of games, their expanded team, financial success, the hardware technology, or any combination of these and more.
  • “The teaser teases the tone.”
  • “But we have a little bit of a roadmap in our head, like this [Starfield] is the one, that like, as a base technology, that this one adds…”
  • Todd doesn't really finish his sentence here but this is what gets me the most intrigued. Todd seems to be talking about how each game they put out adds new technology that gets used in successive games. Think skyrim dragons used for vertibirds, and fallout 4s settlements and robo modding used in the future. Starfield, according to this, should add a great base technology to their lineup, but what? Vehicles and flight? Multiple planets? Roleplaying mechanics? Endless possibilities.
  • “Starfield is definitely a big single player game.”
  • “It's focus is single player, whether is has some social connection,Idon't know,Idon't want to guess right now, but that's our focus.”
  • Possible online features were in the works back then, could be anything from co-op to base sharing.
  • “Starfield is playable (in 2018)”
  • The technology they want to make their games was “closer” to existing.
  • “There are sections of it that are very playable, we mess around for a while and then we know like this is the game we are making, and we know that now, we know the game we are making”
  • “There’s some specific design challenges that we know we’ll have to deal with because we are doing some new things”
  • Really important statement here in my opinion. While “some new things” causing design challenges is super super vague, these are possibilities: Manual space flight, multiple large planets, radiant ai 2.0
  • Visited spacex while working on Starfield in 2018
  • “It's a game but it still has an authenticity to ok this could happen”
  • “We talked, like, What kind of fuel do the ships use, like were using helium 3 which we can debate whether that's a good power source for space ships”
  • So most people read this quote as “Helium 3 as fuel” but I feel like that isn't 100% confirmed. What Todd directly says is that they are using helium 3 and you can debate about its use as a power source. This makes sense as the main interest in helium 3 in the real world is its possible usage in fusion. Since this directly follows the fuel statement, it could imply helium 3 is used directly in a fusion rocket as fuel, be the power for the ship and the ship uses an electric rocket, or be totally unrelated to the fuel.
  • Has to gamify physics in space, and gravity
  • Relates to the leaked ui gravity meter, it seems like physics, eva, and different gravities will be in the game which I feel would be amazing for immersion.
  • “Hey traveling in space in our game is still,Iwant to say it's like flight in the 40s, it's dangerous to go and explore even though lots of people do it”
  • Wanted to ensure Starfield has it's own tone
  • “It's the end all be all science fiction game that everyones always wanted to play, well we could be the ones to pull this off, we have enough talent and experience and technology”
  • Haven't planned past this game
  • “It needs to be fully fleshed out as to, How far in the future is it, what happened in all those years in between, what is the technology level, what do they eat, where do they go, what do they know, how do they communicate, what are the races or places or people or creatures or this or that and why”
  • Possible confirmation of races / alien species
  • Not related to Starfield, but Todd tells his story of how in previous games, if memory ran out they would pretend to be in a long loading screen while they completely rebooted the xbox to free up memory. Too good not to mention
  • “I think it's getting really good hype for a game no one’s seen”
  • I feel called out here Todd qwq
  • “Once we got on the new systems, the things we found that we could do, so it's a major engine rewrite on that game”
  • “What is it that gives you a preference for a hand crafted world?” “I don't necessarily have a preference, …, I think a mix is good, … , We want to spend our time hand crafting the things you can tell are hand crafted, where as nature, computers can do a good job at putting trees and rocks and making landscapes around that you can massage. So we want to make sure that for the scale of our development and out team that we are touching the things that are most important and if we can use procedural systems to generate content that keep the game everlasting that thats what we want to lean on. So went away for a while but we have been coming back to it over time, we like to experiment each game with somewhat procedural stuff, and the stuff we are doing now, we are pushing procedural generation further than we have in a very very long time with the stuff that's coming up.
  • The pushing procedural generation comment really has me expecting them to heavily lean on it for the creation of multiple planets, and based on the diversity that we see in the concept art, I doubt they had much choice.
  • “We have more people doing engine work now by a factor of 5, probably than we've ever had, so the overhaul on the engine is the largest we probably have ever had, larger than morrowind to oblivion. There are things that we do that we still like, the way we build our worlds, the way people can mod it, but from rending to animation to pathing to procedural generation,Idon't want to say everything, it's a significant significant overhaul, it's taken us longer than we would have liked, but it's going to power what we are doing with Starfield and elder scrolls 6, and when people see the results they'll hopefully be as happy as we are with what's on the screen but also in how we can go about making our games.”
  • In response to how advances in hardware change their view on game design, “For us it's been the world around you, pulling off the forest in oblivion was not something you could do before that game, I think going forward, you know the NPCs, how reactive they are, how many there are around you”
  • Todd mentions outer wilds, just as a game he played on gamepass and enjoyed, a 10/10 space exploration game imo.
  • Todd doesn't like minimaps as he feels that you end up staring at them instead of the game
  •  When prompted about what he felt skyrim could have done better, he mentioned making interactions with the game and systems deeper and npcs having greater reactivity
  • Bethesda starts with concept art, music, and interfaces to get a feel for the tone of the game
  • “It's been a huge jump, it's probably our biggest ever,Icould say morrowind to oblivion had been our biggest, this now feels bigger to us, and we felt that it was time, we could really take advantage of the new systems, redoing the renderer and the basic underlying guts of the system itself”
  • Starfield is “written in ink” for 11/11/22 (Edit: Lol, lmao)
  • Todd likes the number 11 for release dates
  • “There’s so much to do, it's a very ambitious game, and we are not going to let off the gas there.”
  • When talking about what skyrim influenced in Starfield, Todd mentioned being able to touch everything, looting, factions, skills, systems that he felt were not exclusive to skyrim but part of Bethesda’s dna
  • Skills in Starfield borrow some parts from elder scrolls and fallout
  • “Skyrim in space in all the best ways”
  • Todd loves Indiana Jones.
  • Will be brought up in the concept art, the Constellation library gives me an indiana jones / 19th century explorer vibe
  • Mentions “social elements” being added to their games again like in the 2018 interviews, saying that they tried in previous games but havent gotten it right.
  • Will be interesting to see where this goes, anything from coop to base sharing to who knows what.
  • “What do you want from me?”
  • “When we finally get around to talking about it, I think you will be impressed, I think you will say ‘That looked like it's worth the wait’”

The ship customization survey

Quick detour here, Bethesda made a survey that appeared on their website asking about what users liked to customize.

The inclusion of spaceships in that group would seem to imply that there is at least some level of ship customization, though the extent is unknown. Could be paints / skins, customizing the interior, full on modularity, or heck full on creation of ships panel by panel, we just don't know.

        The Watch concept image

(Don't know a great title for this one)

Before E3 2021, someone found this image on a Bethesda server, so it's authenticity seemed super high, but alot of the images that make up this image were found in outer places. This makes my head hurt so im going to analyze it, link two posts, one from when the image was found and the other who found the images sources and let you decide.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/n81vas/heres_a_cleaner_and_clearer_image_more_text_is/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/na6tyg/the_latest_Starfield_leak_is_probably_fake_its/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Starting with the right side:

Bottom right is the flight path for the Apollo missions, in a free return trajectory, you can even see the service and lunar module.

Right above that is a drawing of neptune with the trident symbol for neptune below it,

Then we have a watch, reminiscent of but not the same as the watch we see in the into the Starfield videos and patent we will see later. The watch has that half bar for O2 and CO2 that we do see there and in the 2018 leaks. Also the watch has sna written on the side, possibly space nation alliance, something we see on a poster in the 2018 leaks.

Text on the right side reads Gravitational something and 74583.4

Left side top we see a whole bunch of starships, many of which feel less “grounded” than the official ships we have seen, but again could be concept art that gets fleshed out. We again see 74583.4 here too. The text on the left reads:

… surface that is

… craters. It has no

… it doesn't have any

… moons

It is some description of a planet but no real info can be gleaned from it.

Finally we have a drawing of a structure with many ships tethered to it, and two celestial bodies in the background. Some think this could be an early concept for neon, or could be a space station. My opinion would be that it is a space station given how the ships are tethered to it, if this was neon the ships would have to be constantly burning fuel to combat gravity, and since ships are above the station they could not be floating in the sea below neon.

2021 Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYqyVpCV-3c

This trailer was the first big official amount of info we got, and has been looked at a lot. In particular, Odah’s iconic 53 page google doc[3] covers just about all that you could possibly want, but i'll go over it too emphasizing what feels important to me.

First thing to mention, Creation Engine 2 is used for this game. In the interviews a point Todd stressed was the engine upgrades, and these upgrades were worth a name change to them. We start hearing a voice, which I'll put off for now until we go through all the visuals.

The very first image we see is that of our ship, through a surprisingly low resolution “scanner” as the voice over describes. We then get the cargo bay of our ship.

This is a moderately sized area, with a ton of items strapped to the walls in a similar fashion to a ship's stowage. Most likely this would all be decorative, but it is a lot of clutter for a personal storage area. One item of note is a live plant in the bottom left, which appears to imply that there is some measure keeping the air inside the ship when the ramp was opened. On the center left, we see a distinct medical crate that stands out over the others, which my bet would be that it functions like the white medical boxes in Fallout 4 and 76 you can loot. Last but not least, the center of the shot contains a Ladder! Ladders are in this game to climb, albeit in a canned animation of you using them.

Next a shot from the outside of the ship looking in, the thing of significance here being the holstered weapon being visible on the backback. Hopefully this indicates a return to being able to see what weapon you are carrying not in your hands.

On the second deck of the ship, we have a shot focused on a center console / display table. In the background we see the same ladder as before, and a 4 person table with displays for eating, hopefully implying some crew / companion mechanics. On the table we have a Nova Galactic mug, one of the companies we will see a lot of, a form with a pen, a device close to the camera that appears to be a reader type device, it has text on it and a top and bottom button on it's right, and some type of pack.

Looking at the bottom left of the image we have some controls for this display. The dial there looks very similar to the leaked ui image we saw earlier.

We see an ETA of 22 mins and 3 seconds, possible travel time between systems not being instant? To the left there we see an Astroguidance Reference with a list of things below it and an icon designating this as an Astroguidance station

On the table we have the design used often when marketing Starfield, which most people assume to be a gravity field of some sort, used for ftl travel. We have numerous buttons on the display, Under status we are told that we are Landed, GFLA Spooled and Nav Compute. GFLA means graviton field loop array, something we hear later, and is most likely the term for ftl in Starfield. Other headers on the table include Chart config and Navigation. Most likely this acts as a map where we can plot out courses before setting off to visit them?

The next shot we see a possible grenade, a 7.77mm smg that the character lays on the table, some space food including a half eaten sandwich, some green and white possible currency pieces, and a Nova galactic flight manual for the ship, same company as the mug.

Then we have a stowage shelf with some interesting items, least of which is a broken helmet. In the back we have the “Constellation spacefarer’s guide”, possibly an in-universe tutorial book. Then we have two books, first of which is Omega, a story about a comet on a collision course for earth and how the world reacts. The second is Sailing alone around the world, a book about a voyage circumnavigating the world. Finally we have a Constellation box, which we see later in the Into the Starfield videos, and contains a watch and patch in that video. The watch is called the “Chronomark Lifepack Interlink LPV 6.0” and we will see the functions of the real watch which were leaked later. This watch appears to be a likely pip boy substitute or metro exodus watch, telling the player information about themselves and their environment.

This wall towards the front of the crew area has tons of information. First, there is a proper sealed door leading into the cockpit. It's inclusion here feels somewhat off, as there is no airlock from the ramp into the cargo bay, and from the ladder up to the crew quarter. Given the live plant in the cargo area, and the sandwich on the table, we can assume that these areas already have an atmosphere despite the open ramp. So either there is something keeping air inside already or the planet we are on has an atmosphere (which it does) and there would be a problem on other planets. The pressurized door here could be just for looks or maybe the ship can become depressurized in combat? Or maybe it just looks cool ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The mirror has 3 separate things written on it. First we have:

Best Settings:

ENG = 3,2,3

SHD = 6,3,1?

GRV = 4,2,2

Upgrade Reactor?

So the best guess that this is referring to is some way to manually divert power to the different systems, ENG = engines, SHD = shields, GRV = gravity, as the last line mentions upgrading the reactor. This brings up some questions, first of which is that gravity feels like the odd one out. In Star Citizen, they have a power diverting mechanic between engines, shields and weapons. Having gravity here, something you would not think is related to combat, is odd. This almost certainly refers to the Graviton loop field array FTL travel, as we see a GRV panel later saying that. Secondly, what do the numbers mean (mason)? They don't add up row wise or column wise to a consistent number, so it may not be a balancing act of power. Could be something you have to set before going out and not being dynamic, with n number of points given based on how upgraded a system is, ie engines and grav is the same so get 8 total points while shields are upgraded giving 10 total points.

        Next set of text:

Reminder:

Cydonia security does NOT have a sense of humor…

Location called Cydonia exists. Could be cydonia on mars, cydonia the asteroid in our solar system, or a wholly new location named after the ancient greek city. It is somewhat similar in that regard to Laconia, a Greek location used for a group / planet in the Expanse.

        Final set of text:

Vasco, we’re out of Tranquilitea. Do NOT get decaf!

Vasco is the robot we see through the trailer, and there is a drink item called tranquilitea, most likely named after the sea of tranquility on the moon where Apollo 11 landed. Most likely just trailer fluff, but possibly could send vasco out to purchase items when landed at a location.

On the right, we have a poster for a violin player Alyssa Demil… performing live at Akila city, capital of the freestar collective, possibly something we could see ourselves. Then we have 3 pictures of vasco in different locations. One desert, one jungle, and one lunar type environment. The dates here range from 2320 to 2305, and all say SOL before the date. This could mean taken in SOL, our solar system, or since they precede the dates, could be a way of distinguishing that the date system is what we use on earth, and not another system.

Finally on this wall we have a number of batches, stickers, and patches.

  • The Livingstone Project
  • Pioneer IV expedition
  • New Age Resolution

  • Top one with the space shuttle I cannot read unfortunately
  • New Discover(ie)’s expedition
  • The 10th planet
  • Also the name of a canceled Bethesda scifi game
  • Ranger medal
  • Astrodynamics

  • Top one here I can't make out again
  • (something) neptune expedition

My best bet? You earn these for completing missions for Constellation (expedition) and they get displayed in your ship afterwards (although the 10th planet one may just be an easter egg)

Then we get a close up of a diagram with the narration“what you've found, it's the key to unlocking everything

Top left we have sections given greek names, alpha beta chi delta epsilon and rho. Under that we have:

Debate in Constellation continues over the nature of the patterns. Circular design seems intentional, but the disconnected elements suggest separate meanings.

Center left we have diagram with labels:

  • Central? chamber
  • Large (something) Walls
  • Rough steps & after (something)

Bottom left a diagram of Rotating rings, Two rings, and 3 rings, apparently coming from the center of the structure we see next.

Here we have a description of We have so far been unable to determine what happens in the center. Best guess would be some kind of ancient portal / gateway that we will end up activating based on the rings that come out of it.

This whole diagram gives me remtech vibes from mass effect andromeda, or the ring builders from the expanse. One of the concept arts we see I believe shows this artifact, and will be mentioned in the concept art section.

We then get a quick shot of the main character flicking some overhead switches, like those on an airplane, but unlike those on  an airplane, these seem to be unreachable from the seat which is odd.

An exterior shot of the ship, outpost, and landscape. The ship has 2 main engine blocks on the back, each with 3 engines, and 2 downward facing engine blocks on each side. The outpost is mostly unremarkable, with very straight walls, but has a weird telescope / weapon / device on it's roof, with 4 thin panels making it up. The landscape looks cold and rocky, but the blue sky and haze indicates some type of light atmosphere.

In the background of this shot we have a canted chair, possibly for a crew member to man and provide support?

The next few shots deal with instrument panels, so let's glean as much interesting info from them. I am in the manual flight camp, andIthink with the detail on these instruments, Todd's comments about Starfield, the resetera leaker we just had, and more, that some form of manual space flight will be in the game

Weird angle, but here we see an angle of attack (AOT) indicator in the top left, this shows the pitch of the ships nose, with a special mark for landing. Also have a grav button highlighted near it.

Here we have some panels further back on the bridge, possibly at a support station.

On the top we have 3 panels

  • GRV (Gravity)
  • Here it says Graviton Loop Field Array, so we can assume this is related to ftl
  • 3 tabs on top named SX1 SX2 and SX3 and 3 tabs on bottom named PX1 PX2 and PX3 which slowly slide together, no clue their meaning.
  • We then have a number line looking thing with labeled tick marks
  • And finally a grid of cells, some filled in and some colored in, and a few boxes have numbers
  • Really no clue as to the significance of these markings
  • PWR (Power)
  • Bottom small text says R-2300 Supermax Genset
  • Top we have information about cores and more unreadable text
  • Middle left we have high temperatures around 175c, possibly engines, and then one low temperature at -200c
  • Middle right we have 3 tanks labeled HE3, further supporting helium 3 for power not directly rocket fuel
  • Bottom we have 3 bars combining to one, no clue on significance
  • LIF (life support)
  • Labeled Vita Survival systems J-series
  • Info about the environment, 22.3 degrees c, 60% probable humidity, and 9.82 most likely m/s for gravity on the ship.
  • Top right we have 4 “GPLA? Cells”, Flight deck, JL? Hab, and Bay. This seems to imply different sectors of the ship possibly having different levels of life support, possible breaches of the ships hull?
  • Big circle graph showing the make up of the atmosphere, being normal air composition with ~70% Nitrogen and ~21% oxygen.

On the bottom we have 4 panels labed BUS, similar to the terminology used in Apollo (most famously what's said right after Houston we have a problem being “main b bus undervolt”). Lots of dials and electrical / logical circuits here but nothing too interesting, but the partly obscured panel most likely labeled “breakers” lists a lot of categories

  • Main Engine / APU
  • Thruster Array
  • Shield Genset
  • Grav loop field array
  • Something pack something
  • Human something

Here is our best look at the controls for the pilot, which look very similar to star citizens drake cutlass’.

Right display:

  • Top right weapons:
  • PK X-8
  • PK Y-12
  • PK MISS
  • Missile weapons
  • All the weapons are currently ready, and have a tmp (temperature) spot on the display for overheating
  • Top left we have PFO header, with a circle in the center for navigation or targeting? and 2 pitch and yaw bars
  • Bottom left we have propulsion controls
  • Two thrust bars
  • Thruster display for fore and aft and which direction they are firing
  • Break and boost display
  • Fuel flow is on
  • Bottom Right we have shields
  • Labled WAV FLD 0 through 2
  • GRAV is labled as critical
  • Not in re entry config
  • Interesting that these two are under the shield display
  • Buttons on the bottom of the display allowing for switching whats shown
  • Current not legible
  • PFD
  • PROP
  • PEAP
  • DEF
  • ACS
  • SHLD
  • FAULT
  • My best bet is that this will function like star citizen’s MFD’s, where you can hit these buttons to choose what this display shows
  • Biggest nail in the coffin for this theory is that both the right and left seem to be on the left most tab but show different things.
  • Around the MFD we have physical buttons, none of which really stand out, but feel very apollo / lunar landery.

Center display:

  • Appears to be a target or display where something else will appear
  • Top right says Auto flight off and Capt co…
  • Biggest thing for me saying that we have manual space flight
  • Bellow the center display we have a number pad and some throttles
  • When the main character turns a knob from “A” to “status,” this display now says “Flight check override”
  • Another thing for manual space flight?

Far panel is basically illegible, but parts of it look similar to the displays like we saw for GRV earlier, with the 3 tabs on top and 3 tabs on bottom

Outside of the ship and vasco. Ship is titled or class Frontier with identification number NG1350. NG is almost certainly Nova Galactic based on the mug and flight manual.

We see vasco boarding the ship then the downward facing engines ignite for takeoff, each appearing to have 3 engines to a pod, and using traditional spark streams like real rockets for ignition:

Rest of the trailer shows a nicely detailed face on the main character and gives us the release date of 11 11 22.

A transcription of all the audio:

  • Controller: Constellation Starship Frontier, we have you on scanners.
  • Organization Constellation, Is a Starship, class / name Frontier
  • Controller: Performing remote system check.
  • Controller: Helium 3 tanks check, seals are intact.
  • Todd Howard in an interview mentioned that they used helium 3 as a fuel. Could also be used for power generation as helium 3 is a common candidate for fusion.
  • Controller: We are still [a] go.
  • Female Voice: They say, the wonder is not that the field of stars is so vast, but that we have measured it.
  • Now what the heck does this mean
  • The field (quantity?) of stars is vast, but it has been measured by Constellation / humanity.
  • Only possible thing that I could come up with: possibly the nature of their FTL travel limits them to a small region of space, and that region has been measured?
  • Female Voice: You're part of Constellation now, part of our family.
  • Female Voice: What you've found, it's the key to unlocking everything.
  • Another narrative hint, something about the structure discussed earlier.
  • Controller: We read you Constellation.
  • Our organization / call sign, probably going to be used like “Dragonborn” to refer to the character without using their name.
  • Female Voice: This is all we've been working towards.
  • Slightly cryptic, Constellation is about exploring and this is like the mother of all discoveries based on prior statement.
  • Controller: Jemison route looks good.
  • Jemison appears to be a planet as we will see later and a route has been plotted to it in advance by the controller, which could be a point against manual flight
  • Female Voice: We've come to the beginning of humanity's final journey.
  • Yet another cryptic statement, why is this our final journey? Final frontier? End of the species, either extinction or evolution?
  • Controller: Prepare for departure.
  • Controller: Graviton Loop Array Spool, check.
  • Sci-fi words strung together for a name for an FTL drive. Gravitons are “a hypothetical elementary particle that mediates the force of gravitational interaction,” so by manipulating gravity we can go faster than light
  • Controller: Space lanes clear.
  • How important is space traffic in Starfield?
  • Female Voice: That's why we're here.
  • Controller: Main engines go, ignition.
  • Female Voice: To discover what's out there.
  • Controller: Good luck Constellation, you are go for launch.

Whew and that's it for the 2021 teaser, not as much as Odah, but I think I hit almost all the interesting points there.

Into the Starfield: The Journey Begins

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wun9up_M87E

After e3 2021, Bethesda started releasing behind the scene videos called “Into the Starfield.” So far we have gotten 4 episodes including the introduction, and these have given us a ton of information about the gameplay mechanics and visuals through concept art. The concept art will be analyzed at the end, but here we will go over what they actually talk about

“When we look to the sky we wonder if we are alone, what's out there, what our future holds? In some ways since every element in each of us is from the stars, we want to return.” - another quote from Todd just stressing the exploration aspect of the game. Whenever they talk about Starfield, exploration and discovery seems to be the key point.

Most likely a look at Starfield’s main menu with a “press any button to start” on the bottom

We see Emil Pagliarulo, design director at Bethesda, working on a word document giving a lot of information about the game, specifically an in game notice about the crimson fleet

United Colonies logo at the top]

[SysDef logo below it to the left] [UC Vanguard logo below it to the right]

Urgent Communique’

Please Be on Alert

Pirates of the Crimson Fleet have extended far beyond the Kryx system and have established footholds in the Sagan, Cheyenne, Lunara and Narion systems. Both SysDef and theVanguard are committed to ridding United Colonies space of these parasites.

This is clearly no longer just a Freestar Collective problem.

Also be advised that the “Crimson Fleet” is not a single organized entity or faction. Rather, it is a loose confederation of individual captains, all organized under the same banner.

Shown here is the symbol, or “jolly roger” they've adopted. Anyone displaying that symbol is assumed to be associated with the Crimson Fleet, and can be terminated at will

[Crimson Fleet logo here]

Any questions should be address to Lieutenant John Tuala at MAST for the vanguard, and Commander Kibwe Ikande aboard the UC Vigilance for SysDef.

UC Fleet Admiral Pascual Logan

MAST [Military, Administrative and Scientific Triumvirate]

New Atlantis - Planet Jemison - Alpha Centauri

Lots and lots of good info here, lets pick it apart

  • SysDef and Vanguard
  • Seem to be two independent groups, both focusing on defense / policing / anti-piracy
  • Both working for the UC, Vanguard is called UC vanguard and SysDef’s Commander Kibwe Ikande is stationed on the UC Vigilance
  • Brings questions to why there are two organizations performing the same task, perhaps vanguard is state run while SysDef is more mercenary?
  • This is clearly no longer just a Freestar Collective problem.”
  • Crimson fleet originally operated in Freestar space?
  • System names dropped
  • Kryx
  • Home system of the Crimson Fleet?
  • Sagan
  • Named after Carl Sagan assumedly
  • Cheyenne
  • Lunara
  • Luna?
  • Nation
  • Alpha Centauri
  • Will discuss this in it's own point
  • Crimson fleet isn't one group, but common flag for pirates
  • MAST [Military, Administrative and Scientific Triumvirate]
  • Some type of overarching government for the UC
  • The final line is the most important for me, Says New Atlantis - Planet Jemison - Alpha Centauri.
  • We can assume this is City - Planet - System, meaning that the capital of the UC is on Jemison, the route to which we hear plotted in the 2021 teaser, and is in the system of Alpha Centauri.
  • Alpha Centauri is the closest star system we know of to Sol, comprising two close stars and a smaller one further out.
  • This begs the question, why is the UC headquartered in Alpha Centauri and not Sol? Some type of civil war that Sol lost? Perhaps based on the inclusion of the Omega book in the teaser, earth was devastated and lost its status as the most powerful planet / system? Or perhaps is just a trend we see in the real world where new capital cities are constructed from scratch to make a modern foundation

Leaving that doc now,

  • “In it we invite you to join Constellation, the last group of space explorers. It's a next generation role playing game where you'll be who you want, go where you want, experience our stories, and forge your own”
  • The last group of space explorers line is what really stands out to me. Why? Why are we the last? Does every other group not care about exploration? Is it referring to some humanity ending thing preventing anyone from exploring in the future?

  • “More than that, Starfield is about hope, our shared humanity, and searching for the answers to life's greatest mystery.”
  • Is just a line said, but hopefully indicates more emotional storytelling from Bethesda

Starfield: Welcome to Constellation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5-XwTd-fbE

An unlisted video with nothing major of note, but has Bethesda staff welcoming us to Constellation. Here for completeness.

Into the Starfield - Ep1: The Endless Pursuit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgSr9tuJS18

A Lot of general Bethesda information here, good to watch, but i'm going to just record the good Starfield info here.

  • Mentions again the list of games he wanted to make after morrowind, with scifi being just after fallout
  • “A Lot of our games are about exploration, and that's sort of the ultimate exploration, what's out there, what's past earth”
  • Another exploration comment
  • “It's got a more realistic science based backing”
  • “The mechanics of the world are entirely different, but there are similarities, those are things we like. We like playing first person, we like having the coffee cups, we like being able to touch everything.”
  • “To just sit there and watch the world go by, seems like it's not gameplay, but it is vital to how you feel through the rest of it”
  • “It starts feeling so real to us, ... concepting everything they eat, or the toys the children play with, or what are their bedtime stories. What is their art, what is their history, what is their entertainment. It is a universe not just a game”
  • “We always have that step out moment into the world … I like to say that Starfield has two step out moments, that's cryptic”
  • Two step out moments could be many things, but step out onto a planet and step out into space is my bet
  • “What does going to space mean to you, and everyone comes back to the same one ‘I want to see whats out there’”
  • Exploration stressed yet again

Into the Starfield - Ep2: Made for Wanderers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8_JG48it7s

  • “It's the level of immersion that we really focus on, that you're not just playing a game but you're living in this world, this universe.”
  • “You feel like you have an impact in the world.”
  • “The more that we can put you in the situation where you're going to decide, that's what makes video games the best form of entertainment that they are.”
  • I really agree with Todd here, choices and consequences are what make games unique. Many modern Bethesda games have been lacking in this when compared to others in the industry, so hopefully Starfield can expand upon this well.
  • “We don't just make rpgs, we make simulations”
  • “It's nice with Starfield to go back to some things we didn't do, the backgrounds, the traits, defining your character, all those stats”
  • Backgrounds can mean very different things. The simplest it could be is like in wasteland 3, background as a medic gives you better medic starting skill skill. In the middle is something like cyberpunk with a unique prologue but afterwards basically no consequences, or a system with consequences but no playable part unique to that background. On the high end of the scale would be dragon age origins, a game named after it's backgrounds. That game had 6 unique starts with their own prologue, and most importantly Your background came up again and again often throughout the story. A human noble would have vastly different interactions than a dalish (wild) elf. I'm really hoping Starfield goes that route and really makes them matter.
  • “The tech is based on scanning of real world models, similar to the photogrammetry we do in our landscapes, we are kind of applying the same thing to our people as well”
  • United Colonies - Future space republic idealized
  • Freestar Collective - Space western fantasy, people out on the frontier
  • Ryujin industries - Corporate life
  • In the opinion of Will Shel, the lead quest designer, Ryujin industries has the best “start”
  • Emil clarifies that “It's a megacorp, you get hired”
  • Starts probably means the start of the questline, but possibly (hopefully if you're like me and love alternate starts ala dragon age origins) could be a background like Todd talked about earlier.
  • “What are the groups that would make it [the world] feel whole and believable and then how does the player interact with them”
  • In regards to the crimson fleet, “They aren't just this foe, let the player join them, what does that mean”
  • If you want to play the crimson fleet content as a good player, emil says you can report back to your superiors and be like “space cop”
  • Feels similar to the railroad in Fallout 4 having you play the instrument content as a double agent.
  • “Something we really leaned into on this game, how those other characters [companions] felt about you” “That's probably my favorite part, like when you're exploring and then your companion makes some comment off the cuff about something that you're checking out or something that just happened. That just feels so perfect for immersion”
  • Focus on companion depth, enhancing the contextual comments we had in Fallout 4. Companions in Skyrim felt primitive compared to companions in Fallout 4, so let's hope for a similar jump.
  • Persuasion minigame thats has some beats with the oblivion system
  • “You have to think about what's my risk here, which one doIwant to choose, we didn't it to be a system where there was the right thing to say”
  • “It feels like you're having a conversation where you're actually trying to persuade someone”
  • Really excited for this, I loved the old oblivion system but it was a very very simple minigame. Hover over one of 4 emotions, if they look angry don't select it when a big wedge is there! It didnt feel like you were actually having a conversation with the npc, it was just a minigame. A focus on making persuasion not be an abstracted minigame like that or a simple dice roll or skill check is a system that i'm eager to see if they pulled off.
  • “I think when we knew we were making a game about space, you ask yourself certain questions, and that question is ‘what is out there’. And so as a game we have romance, adventure, mystery, butIthink with Starfield there's this other layer of the cosmos, the universe, what is out there.”
  • More and more comments about exploration, and exploration really is the main thing when you think about space. So many great sci fi rpgs have that “romance, adventure, mystery,” but really exploring star systems? There really is a niche that Starfield can fill here, and I think there is a large amount of people who want that focus on discovery.
  • “We're asking the big questions. Why are we all here? Where is it all leading? And whats next for humanity?”
  • Possible hints to the storyline of the game, feels very bombastic and dramatic, assuming that there is some big event we trigger or find ourselves in. My bet being on the artifact shown in the 2021 teaser.

Into the Starfield - Ep3: The Sound of Adventure

  • “In order to create this [music], you have to ask these questions. Where are you going, what's your motivation, what's your story, what is really pushing us. This is what really drove me more than anything else. These huge questions that are as big as space.”
  • The music was done with the concept art, at least getting started in 2005
  • Mentions that the music in at least the main theme is circular in it's composition, like the go out, adventure, discover, return loop in the game
  • Talks about weaving music into the game and making it ambient.
  • Hear quiet creaking noises in a ship, assumedly space ambience when your ship is still.
  • “The music is like the companion to the player in the singleplayer game”
  • “Our sense of scale had to be totally readjusted in, making a game on a planetary surface as we've always done before, and now where you have these very vast distances against this black starry background.”
  • Manual flight has to be a thing now right? If the game was a series of planetary surfaces and stations separated by loading screens this quote wouldn't make sense. Why would they talk about the distances against a black background if you don't actually experience them?
  • “It is a blank canvas in a massive playground, and all the pieces to write your own story.”

Todd howard Reddit Q&A

https://www.reddit.com/user/ToddBethesda/

On Nov 10th 2021 Todd did a QnA on reddit, some of the interesting responses:

  • You've repeatedly said tone is the first thing BGS prioritizes when designing a game. How do you pick a tone to build an entire game around? Are there conversations or even debates on what the tone should be? Also, how do you preserve tone across so many different areas of development especially the non-visual ones (such as npc dialogue) that can't pull so directly from your studio's excellent concept art?
  • Great question, and one we debate here often. Tone = world. What place would you want to explore? Why? Who would you be? What would you do? How does that pique your curiosity? How is that curiosity rewarded? We like mixing places with elements that you feel comfortable with or can relate to, alongside the fantastical.
  • Will there be any robot companions in Starfield?
  • Yes, kind of.
  • Vasco is a “kind of” companion? Possibly like a dogmeat  that you can have in addition to a regular companion?
  • I've read that a goal of Starfield is that it will be more of a "hardcore RPG". Can you verify this and flesh that out in more detail? Does that mean that the character creation will be more complicated like it was in Morrowind and Oblivion?
  • Really excited about what the team has done with character creation here. Including choosing background, skills, etc. You also can pick your pronoun (he, she, they) and we've recorded all the relevant dialogue to support that choice.
  • Similar stuff talked about in the into the Starfield videos
  • Hey Todd! What type of mod support can we expect to see in creation kit engine 2 for Starfield?
  • Our plan it have full mod support like our previous games. Our modding community has been with us for 20 years. We love what they do and hope to see more make a career out of it.
  • Great, mods are easily some of the best parts of these games imo.
  • Hello, Todd! In this past year, we saw the rise of some impressive Machine Learning tools that synthetize human voice, using assets from Skyrim (and other Bethesda games) to generate new realistic voice lines. What do you think about this technology, in general? Do you have hope to use it in some future game? And do you think it will have a negative impact on the relationship between game studios and real voice actors?
  • We actually use such systems during development so we can play the game with voices, but there is no substitute for professional actors. They are a huge part of our development and are amazing partners in bringing these worlds to life.
  • No ai generated voices to fill out content
  • Hi Todd, Odah here. The guy who made a 50 page google doc. about the Starfield E3 2021 Trailer. I'm going to ask, has there ever been a point in Skyrim's development where you thought of adding climbable ladders to the game? Also about that ladder in the Starfield trailer....will it be an animation (like holding E to climb up like in Mass Effect: Andromeda)?Ladderfield needs to know.
  • Despite the advent of super-computers and next gen hardware - ladders are our arch-nemesis. It's an animation, and we use sparingly.

Misc Starfield Videos

Starfield: Location Insights

Three videos released all at once, each on a major city in the game - Aug 27, 2021

  • Has a large spaceport
  • The capital of the United Colonies, the most powerful established military and political faction in the game.
  • The city is a true melting pot, and it's residents come from every race, creed, and ethnicity
  • Described as a “pleasure city”
  • Xenofresh corporation built a fishing platform, but found a psychotropic fish that they could turn into a drug, Aroura.
  • Aroura is only legal on neon and people come to the city from oll over to experience it and everything else the city has to offer.
  • Capital of the Freestar collective, a loose confederation of 3 systems
  • The citizens of the city value personal freedom above all else
  • The city is walled to keep them safe from the Ashta, an alien that is a cross between a wolf and a velociraptor.

Starfield – The Settled Systems

Video about the universe that Starfield takes place in -  Oct 22 2021 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjh5DJCEpxY

  • The game takes place in a region called “The Settled Systems” that extends out for around 50 light years
  • Around 2310 the UC fought the Freestar collective in the bloody colony war and they now enjoy a tense peace.
  • Logos for the factions
  • Plenty of human threats out there including
  • Ecliptic mercenaries
  • Pirates of the crimson fleet
  • Violent Spacers
  • Generic pirates / raiders?
  • Fanatical zealots of House Va’ruun
  • Constellation is committed to uncovering the mysteries of the galaxy
  • We are one of Constellations newest members.

Starfield Suite Musical Performance

As part of Skyrim's 10th anniversary, a collection of music was played by the London Symphony Orchestra.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaskxKfeFno

The last part of the concert was dedicated to Starfield’s music, that section has been separated here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqb0GhRhU88

I am not particularly adept with analyzing music but overall feels very sci-fi (obviously..). Many parts feel reminiscent of star wars music and other popular sci-fi franchises. A point that they have stressed over and over about the game is exploration and discovery, and the music feels like it captured that extremely well.

Starfield: Meet Vasco

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5NlI_QV0Gw

Vasco is our robot companion seen in the 2021 teaser. He is an early model built by luna robotics based on a standard Type A bipedal chassis. He was refurbished by Constellation and now serves with them. He is capable of traversing rough terrain, carrying supplies, and defending himself if needed. He is currently painted with the traditional red and white Constellation paint, albeit scratched and dented from his years in the field. Lots of good concept art from this video, which will be in the concept art section, but the main point is that he feels like he will be modular. Hearthfire was a test for fallout 4s settlements, and I believe that fallout 4s Automatron dlc where you could modify robot companions was a test for this.

The Chronomark Watch

Reddit user u/SquiddyVonn was able to find images of the watch shown in the into the Starfield introduction video, as well as the draft user manual for it. Really a 10/10 find and all credit to him

https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/s2qbap/new_images_of_the_watch_i_found_along_with_draft/

Boot up process of the watch shows the Constellation logo before loading. Shows the date and time in the center, as well as the time in an analogue fashion around the rim. The inner bar that is O2 CO2 in game shows steps as a percent of a daily target here. Grey line below date is the battery life.

Watch states that it was established in the game lore in 2188. On the left side the text says ATMOS AMET, where AMET could possibly mean Atmospheric model evaluation tool? But then the ATMOS would feel redundant so who knows.

Turning the watch off says a random “parting message” before going blank.

Can be toggled to show moon phase and sunrise and sunset.

Also can show barometer, accelerometer, magnetometer, and thermometer data.

Weather too!

Notifications as is customary with a smart watch.

Flashlight fulbright mode

Settings menu.

Overall the physical watch functions much like any other smart watch, although it has some unique specializations. The focus on sensor data, weather, and moon data helps play into the sci fi science theme for Starfield. However, little can be gleaned about how the watch will actually function in the game. Best guess so far is just like a pipboy, but how much it will be used for menus vs sensor data I cannot say.

Hevy008 Leak

Last lil detour here before the concept art, in late April of 2022, someone named Hevy008 posted some comments on Resetera that seemingly leaked information. Why would we care seeing as there have been many leaks just with text information in the past?  Two things, First, Hevy was verified by the Resetera mods as being a character artist. To be certified in this way the user has to provide evidence to support that they were in that position. Secondly, Jason Schrier said Can confirm that Hevy008 was legit. Can't necessarily back up everything they said, but they were definitely who they said they were. Hope the lawyers aren't going after them." If unfamiliar, Jason Schrier is a journalist who has had a very good track record with information, especially Bethesda information, leaking an early Fallout 4 casting script, and information about Fallout 76.

As he said, none of this confirms what Hevy said, but since they mostly likely were a character artist for Bethesda, it might give their claims more weight. We will likely see official info on this soon so no need to dwell on it too much, but the main take away is that they confirmed flying your own ship, albeit seemingly unintentionally, believing that it was already shown. Also mentioned a beta for the game, which would be unusual for a Bethesda single player game.

Again not 100% confirmed, but with Schrier and Resertera confirming their position, is much more likely than many of the other rumors we have had.

Concept Art

Finally the concept art. We have gotten a ton of this and ill try to go through each and every one we have gotten and look at it. While I love the concept art, It isn't in the game. The game may look radically different or radically scaled back from the concept art we have seen. That's just the nature of concept art, as the transition from drawing to in game has many complications.

Many of the concept art pieces we have may have been photobashed from real world locations. For two shots of neon, the original photographs were found:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/usigke/i_just_realized_this_concept_art_of_neon_is/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/uj8fe4/comment/i7iqaez/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

These photobash concept arts are even less likely to match the depiction of the things in the final game. Since we don't know for sure how reliable each of these concepts are going to be, the takeaway from them should be the overall theme and feel of the image, not any specifics. Still going to have a go at looking at them all 😅.

Marketing the game using almost exclusively concept art is a little strange, but considering that before now Bethesda was radio silent until 5 months before release it becomes more understandable. Todd has constantly said he likes to have the reveal to release time to be as short as possible. Fallout 76 forced their hand to show that they were not abandoning their more traditional games, but they still want to hold the gameplay till it gets closer.

Finally, want to mention that u/iTardavk has kept a great post containing all this concept art, and I want to give some credit to him here, thanks for the great work!

(Edit, they now have a nicer format of this collection here: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarfieldAlliance/comments/uvfwtz/page_containing_all_of_the_currently_released/, again great work!)

Constellation Concept Art

As stated in the 2018 teaser analysis, this is 99% likely in the center of that station, most likely a Constellation headquarters. The text saying “Welcome to Constellation,” provides a pretty strong link to Constellation on top of the visual match.

The vibe that I get from this piece is very much an 19th century trophy room / library or an Indiana Jones explorer vibe, something that Todd said he liked. The use of wood, marble statues, display cases, gold accents, rugs, sketching station,  and items on shelves is what pushes it. It also reminds me of the background we see when Todd howard gave interviews. The use of wood especially is more unique for a science fiction space station / ship. Top left we can see a archival robot scanning the shelving, and what I think is another robot on the left? It has a strange outline so I'm assuming it's a robot. In the center we see a hologram display of a broken up structure.

The biggest thing about this piece is the contrast between the traditional science fiction feel and this more antique feel, apt for Constellation, an organization about exploring and discovery.

United Colonies and New Atlantis Concept Art

The spaceport of New Atlantis. The terrain outside looks like flat plants growing on near vertical juts of rocks, could be completely impassable and we can only explore the city when we visit Jemison. In the Sky we see a very close second planet or moon, which we see in other concept art of New Atlantis.

Another concept art of the spaceport but from another angle. This shows a ship outside the spaceport (Or is this pad the space port, the narration here is unclear.) The structure in the background consists of two large blocks with a river flowing through them, and the water falling from down. It appears that there is a public square of somekind between the buildings, with lots of lights. A small and large bridge connects the two buildings. Looking up, we see numerous distant ships and red floating lights, likely acting as landing lights to help guide ships in.

Here we see the same planet / moon in the background. We also see one star in the top right, and one being partly hidden by the planet / moon. Alpha centauri where this is has 3 stars so this works. We see a large center building with green sides, possibly grass, and a green space out in front of it. Around it we see buildings in stark white and orange with alot of straight lines sloping gently inwards. Very much “Future space republic idealized” vibes.

Public area in New Atlantis, possibly in front of the large structure we just saw, and we may see it in the background here. Wide pathways with people walking, the two sitting near the water seem to be in flight suits, but the two walking near the camera seem to have a toga / robe type garb. The tree-like plants in the background we see here appear to be the same that we saw growing on the rocks, with their large flat canopies. In the small channel of water on the right, we see two stork-like animals with yellow heads.

Here we see our ship from the 2021 trailer, the Nova Galactic Frontier landed at New Atlantis. In the background we see the same trees. The ship will be looked at in the ship section, but the characters here give off a very “Han Solo” vibes, especially the one facing us closest to the ship. What appears to be a guard is on the left, with a completely closed off helmet and holding an indistinguishable weapon, but with a large muzzle. In the back we have a man with a very flat hat which looks funny.

In the background on these banners here we have a multicolored rainbow like design then the What appears to be a UC triangular logo. Under it we have a line intersected by a hollow circle with a solid circle in the center. What this design means I do not know, possibly a planet / system emblem or an emblem of this district of the city.

Here we see a train, presumably near the space port due to the welcome sign in the background. The train looks especially “brutalist” with it's upside down T shape. This area feels less “clean” that others, with moss growing down from the structures above, pipes in the background, and a thick smoke. The characters in the foreground would seem more in place in Akila city, with their more rugged garb, assuming that they are mercenary types.

Not confirmed to be New Atlantis but is most likely associated with the UC. Here we see a small ship hauling a cargo container into some manufactory area. The ship, cargo container, and landing pad all have this 0 with a line through it symbol on them.

Freestar Collective and Akila City Concept Art

Interior street of Akila City. Very much feels like a starwars homestead, has that rugged, wild west, yet science fiction feel to it. In the far back we see the wall that keeps the city safe from the ashta, as well as wind turbines outside the wall. The biome the city is in appears to be some type of mountainous tundra, with the people wearing heavy coats. The tall building in the center we see in the other piece of concept art, and my best guess is that it is a government leader building. Other buildings around the center are more akin to rough shacks. Comparing Akila city to New Atlantis, the difference is massive in technology level, especially considering that the Freestar Collective headquartered here is apparently the second most powerful faction.

Exterior shot of Akila City. Here we see fairly impressive defensives, with a heavy metal gate, spotlights, and mounted guns. On the walls we see the skeleton of some creature (which to be discussed later). Very much feels starwarsy, like the city in the mandalorian season 2 ep 5. From this angle the city feels much more dense and industrial, could possibly be a different vision from the first concept art. On the left there are distinctive spherical buildings, which my best guess would be refinery or communication equipment?

On the wall we also have this alien looking skull and crossbones symbol. In the foreground, we have a tree that appears to be thorny, complimenting the personality of the freestar collective. The person in the foreground carries a hunting rifle type weapon and a combat knife, wearing leathers, boots and a brimmed hat, not too out of character in a fallout game. It appears that they are wearing some type of mask over their face, with a kind of avian feel to it.

Akila City partly covered street market / bazaar. Very dense and cluttered, reminds me of the first anthem demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL5GSfs9fi4. The signs on the left say Fresh fruit, scrap, and spices, and the stall owner appears to be wearing a glowing visor. The person closest to the camera has an assault rifle and a helmet covering their full face. Overall I get a very dune / middle eastern / oriental vibe to this street. Oh also on the left there is a little gecko on the wall :D.

Ryujin Industries and Neon Concept art

Two separate concept arts of the exterior of Neon. This very well illustrates why while the concept art is cool, we can't take what we see there as gospel, only the broader strokes. Probably then it isn't important for me to analyze all of these but oh well. As Todd probably would say, the concept art is about the tone.

Both show a domed city on top of a platform in the sea. Both show flying ships as well as watercraft around the city. The city in the top concept art appears to be fully domed, while in the bottom the edges of the dome are open. The bottom also has skyscrapers that have outgrown the dome and broken through it, and the top does too but less dramatically. Also in the bottom picture, we appear to be on a secondary landing platform. The lights and colors on the first one make it look like the underside is also used for habitation, possibly for the poorer citizens, but the second one looks more stark and industrial.

The industrial underside of Neon. Very utilitarian maintenance area under the city by the pillars holding the city up. A walkway extends out from the camera, but does not reach the other side, possibly used for docking? On the left we see two boats raised up out of the water, and their designs are sleek, with almost a fallout retro car style. Right under the bridge we see a large barge filled with fish, most likely the fish that is refined into Aurora.

Street market in Neon. Almost as dense as the market in Akila City, but much more dark and wet. Very heavy cyberpunk vibes, with the dark neon lighting, character design, and high walls. On the left there is a seafood shop, with crabs, fish and squid on display. Above the shop there is something written in an unknown language. On the right we see more of the unknown language, and possibly it tattooed on the person there. The language gives me strong aurebesh vibes, the language used in star wars with it's straight lines, rounded corners, and square endings.

Finally a shot of an open air courtyard type area in Neon. Reminds me of the megablock from cyberpunk 2077 with it's overall design and multiple levels.

The center tower has the name of the major corporation Ryujin Industries on it, so we can assume their prominence here. Bottom left we have a yellow building that says “Station” and “Arrival” on it, so I would assume it's a gateway, possibly a rail line, to the starport. On the other signs around, particularly on the top right, we see that language from the previous image. Considering it's presence here in addition to english, which could be indicative of multiple languages in the game, at least lore wise?

Suit Concept Art

Concept art of the “Constellation standard spacesuit” with the more unique T shaped backpack that we see in the junkyard environmental concept art. We get a nice view of the twin “Jetpack” nozzles with what appears to be scorched parts under them inside the depression. On their belt we see a satchel and pistol. The left leg has more pouches and the right leg has some type of rifle. There are some gadgets on the left arm, possibly a compass and or knife?  Could possibly function like the wrist in metro exodus, with multiple distinct elements making up the hud.

“Light” Crimson fleet armor.  In ways of armor, it is just a very rough looking / stitched together leather / hide torso piece over the environmental suit. The suit is about what you'd expect from a space suit, albeit much rougher and exposed than the Constellation suit. The backpack as well feels like it's been stripped of its casing and only has the bare essentials. Note that even so, there are two downward facing nozzles on the pack, which may be just exhaust, but feel to me like a jetpack mechanic. Finally to note is that what appears to be that unique writing we have seen in neon is here along the helmet.

“Medium” Crimson Fleet Armor. While all of the crimson fleet gives me “Belters” from the expanse vibes, this one most of all.

This suit is the same as the previous one, but with heavier armor layered over the top of it, particularly around the legs and shoulders. The chest area now has numerous pouches and what looks to be grenades, while the belt on the back now carries even more gear. The shoulder pads have some ensignia that I can't make out, along with a 1z patch.

“Heavy” Crimson fleet armor. This one is the most different of the three, with the robes and closed off helmet giving this almost a religious look. The helmet cover extending far out over the eyes and the shape of the eyes give the suit an enclave power armor or avian feel. Also to note is that the backpack here appears to have some covering to protect the components, as well as what can be assumed to be the jolly roger described in the first welcome to Constellation word document.

Concept art for a “Violent Spacer.” I assume that a violent spacer is the Starfield equivalent of skyrim bandits or fallout raiders, a generic human enemy. His suit feels a little more high tech than the crimson fleet, with a metal chest plate for protection.

Armor for an “Ecliptic mercenary” Their black and gray color scheme as well as the eclipse insignia on the right shoulder solidifies their name. This looks most like typical sci fi armor, with less exposed components and heavier armor, something that a mercenary would likely care about. Of all the suits (except perhaps the Constellation suits) this one is my favorite, it really gives of an aura of professional mercenary, and hopefully will be more developed than the gunners were in fallout 4.

Environments Concept Art

Since we established that this concept art is mostly for the “tone” of the game, the environment is what excites me the most (behind ships bcIlove love love spaceships). While the details will probably be lost, it would be very strange to show an overall biome here that is not in the game (Though it could still very well happen :/).

An acid / sulfur planet. We see a gas giant and moon in the sky, which is black despite the sunlight on the right, likely indicating little to no atmosphere. The general look of the area is like the toxic valley in fallout 76 or Kadra in mass effect andromeda.

In the background we see 3 alien wildlife creatures

They appear crab like, with multiple armored legs and pincers, but with an elongated head. What appears to be their mouth is at the bottom of the head, on the body, with either their eyes or breathing holes on top. They look almost rock like, or exposed bone for armor. The Flora include small pitchers in the acid lakes, vines with caps that make my trypophobia act up, and long “trees” with bulbs on them.

A rocky desert planet, reminiscent of the american south west and Eos from mass effect andromeda.

This biome has some very unique features in the blue markings. The rock formations have vibrant blue lines at certain elevations, and these markings continue across disjointed outcrops at the sameish height. They are similar to regular rock strata, with the exception of their blue color. Whether they are just some kind of mineral deposit layer formed geologically, or something more, the visual contrast to the orange desert is striking.

The planet also has multiple “dead” looking trees on it. While they appear withered, many have crystalline growths on theme where you would expect leaves, leading me to believe that they are alive but just evolved without leaves. Some of these crystals have the same blue color as the rocks, whether this means they use the same mineral or if the color on the rocks means more is unknown

The planet also has one moon on the top, and either a sun or other celestial body further away below the moon.

Another desert planet but distinct from the first. There is a purple ringed planet in the sky nearby. The sands here are a deep shade of orange, and are more dune like than rocky. The dunes have long wavy light lines through them, which could be roots from these cacti we see. The cacti have a gray, seemingly hard protective shell around them, with the softer purple inside being only exposed at the top. At the base of them, other plants have taken root, in a miniature ecosystem. In the background on the left of the image we also see objects that look to me like they could be a tumbleweed analogue. Further in the background, we see wavy, hard bark like trees, also appearing dead but could also just be how they adapted to the environment. Finally just to note that we see a second Constellation member on the far dune.

A dense jungle planet. Lots of ferns, palms, trees, vines, and flowers. The forest floor looks very dense with no easy to navigate path, so let's see if the game stays with that design. On the trees we see air plants as well as pitcher plants. The plant on the right looks like a human sized sundew, so we may have hostile plants to contend with.

Note that we also got multiple locations in fallout 76 called “sundew groves,” possible preparation for this? (Also one of the spawn locations for the Alien invasion seasonal events is in one of these groves, that's full on conspiracy theory lol)

A swamp planet that I can bet just by looking at it is going to be poisonous / toxic in some way. Severe flashbacks to dark souls, blighttown and it's poisonous swamps. The trees are similar to mangroves or cypress trees, with less but thicker roots, and a massive size, easily larger than the largest redwood. On the tree, there are localized clusters of thorns (again reminding me of blighttown qwq), which may be an independent growth due to the sporadic growth. We also see smaller, but still larger than human height, root protrusions, with many having flat mushrooms on them. In the rear, there is drape like moss or vines on the trees, which I pray is not some type of spider webbing. Finally there are bubbles rising out of the swamp, further making it feel more “toxic.”

This is one of the wildest locations we have concept art of. Of all the concepts, this one feels the most “alien,” the least real, the most like a vision or dream. It appears to be underwater, with the sea anemone type plant life, coral structures in the far rear, and a beam of light shining down? The structures on the walls tho, especially on the left here look too straight to not be manufactured. They could be coral that just grew in geometric patterns, like crystals, but they dont look organic to me. Possibly sunken alien structure that grew sea life on it during it's time under water. If this is underwater, can we expect underwater exploration, like was concepted in fallout 4 but had to be cut> Also note the other explorer here holding a flashlight by their waist and with a different backpack from the standard Constellation one.

A rocky ice / glacial world. Lacking a planet in the sky or a dense atmosphere, this concept has the most majestic sky out of what we have seen. The landscape is rocky and icy, with a dramatic sheer of white rock / ice in the distance. On the left we see two characters outside an exploration vehicle.

The rover has 6 wheels what are spiked to provide more traction on the icy surface. The body of the rover is shaped like a pentagon, with large external boxes, probably for storage or components. The front has a large door protrusion for entry and exit. The rover has a large tail, with a red beacon light and the number 7 printed on it. Hopefully in addition to space ships we will have ground vehicles to drive in the game?

Going to talk about the ships in another section, working on the landscape here. Appears to be the same desert rocky planet as the image with the blue strata based of the rocks and plants we see. Could also be a different planet with a similar biome as the background is not super detailed, and we don't have a great view of the crystal leaves we saw earlier.

A Lava plain looking planet, with a hole the ship is descending into, with some yellow gas escaping. Most likely a different planet from the first concept art of the acid world, but could be another biome on that world. The yellow smoke makes me cautiously say that they could be related. It really depends on the number of planets, if we have many with each planet being a biome of few with multiple biomes to one planet. The planetary surface above the cave seems very flat and featureless, possibly cant walk around up there and can only explore this cave?

One of my favorite favorite concept arts. A scrapyard world full of discarded metal and crashed ships like jakku or could be the aftermath of a battle long long ago. We see numerous wreckages here in a haze with mountains extending in the background. Two wrechages can be made out as ships, with both of them inside impact craters, assumedly from being brought down from orbit.

The closest ship has the title “Expedition” on it, and has numerous engines, both on the back and some up by the front. It has 3 “pods” on this side with an unknown purpose. Now it looks like to me, that in between the character and the ship there are a whole bunch of ruined robots. Either that or Wall-e style junk piles but based on what appears to be the right arm of a robot to the left of the character, I'm thinking these are scrapped robots, either scrapped at another time or left in the wake of the battle. Looking by the character we see another robot / vehicle with a missile pod.

The closest person has a different outfit than the standard Constellation gear that we have seen.

The helmet has glass all the way around, the backpack has a vent uptop and two side protrusions. Note that the backpack still has two nozzles pointed down, possibly for a jetpack feature like was speculated for the Constellation gear. He has military pouches, armor similar to fallout combat armor, and overall has a more militarized vibe compared to the exploration style of the Constellation set. His weapon also feels like a fallout laser rifle, with the rectangular barrel and a sheer flat end.

Sunrise on a rocky ice / glacial world over an encampment. Could be the same rocky ice world as before, based on the rocks which look similar with their angled flat layers of rock outcroppings. The character near the camera again is wearing a different suit from the Constellation standard, with this one having a vaguely quarian looking helmet and a tube connecting it to the pack. He stands next to a beacon, and what looks like a drone with a light, something which we will see in another concept art.

They overlook an outpost made of different segments. From the central dome, tunnels formed via multiple segments branch off in 4 directions. In the direction facing the camera there is no module and we see the airlock. The left side has one segment and a presumed airlock, whole the right side has 4 segments, an airlock, and some vertical inflatable segment, possibly vertical airlock? Close to the camera there is a detached grouping of 5 segments. Close to the dome we see two robots, with arms like vasco, compact torso / head combinations, and tracks like fallout robobrains have.

Far background we have another person by some machines, one of which is a vehicle distinct from the rover we saw earlier. Also in the far back we have a structure that looks like a sci fi oil well. Also Also in the far back is a solar panel array. This possibly could be concept art for the new settlement system?

Space concept art of a planet and a far away planet with rings. The planet's surface looks oddly metallic, although that could be the glare from the star. Also just want to say I love rings and all the ringed planets is making me very happy.

The player on a seemingly artificial world / structure with a very large planet very close by. Gives me Remnant from mass effect andromeda vibes but dormant, with geometric shapes protruding from the landscape, and a dark metallic material.

I believe this to be the structure we see in the teaser trailer with the narration “what you've found, it's the key to unlocking everything,” or at least something else built by that civilization.

The concept art has a similar surface to this, with a manufactured material, and shape designs on the surface. This side profile feels the most same to me.

This one is higher and more drastic, but it has the same raised blocks with slanted tops as the concept art.

Two explorers entering a toxic feeling cave of some kind. The kave kind of gives me spider web vibes (please Todd no more spiders), though that could be from the concept art style. The two explorers have non Constellation armor on, looking more industrial in black and orange red. Behind them sits an excavator that seemingly dug into this cave, colored in white and orange red.

I believe this to be a group of the United Colonies. The colors of white / black and orange match with the color pattern of New Atlantis, and looking closely, it looks like the shoulder patch is the same triangle symbol as seen on a flag in the New Atlantis concept art.

They might not be the same, but with this low resolution it looks like it.

Exploring a cave with a drone friend. Could possibly be the same cave and suit from the previous concept, for sure isn't the Constellation standard. In the back of the cave there are some blue crystal formations, possibly some minable or object the player wants to collect.

Most interesting aspect about this concept is the drone. The way it's over the character's shoulder like this really makes it feel like a gadget / companion.  We see possibly another drone in the concept art with an outpost on the icy world. Could possibly be a gadget that can be deployed for utility like a flashlight and scouting, or could be more like a full companion with more options. Or could just be an enemy type that accompanies other npcs, or could be completely concept and not in the game. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Another cave, this time with more crystals in the center. Possibly deeper in the previous cave. The center has a glow that may be just for the art or could be some artifact. The large and crossing crystals remind me of the “”Cave of the Crystals” in mexico.

A Constellation explorer in a dark watery area. The rocks around are very pocketed and broken up. The two rock formations in the back are “weeping” water out of them, assumedly being fed from a geyser below, otherwise I don't know how the water got there. Could also be frozen water and that's how the streams stay there. One thing to note here is that the character model is much more detailed than before. I don't know but just wanted to point it out.

Interior Concept Art

Detailed shots of concepts for an airlock. The bottom right is the most interesting to me, with the ever so slightly pipboy feeling screen with the raised part around the screen. We also get what appears to be a shot of the airlock from the cockpit in the ship in the 2021 teaser. The left image is from the pilot's seat facing backwards, and we get a better image of a “support seat” for a possible crew member to man.

More realized render of an airlock. Most of the text is unreadable, but the screen top left shows a person in a suit at like a conference panel, possibly placeholder? Also just to the right of the center of the airlock is what looks like an old style circular pressure gage, which helps with the style they are going for.

Someone relaxing in a circular window of a spaceship / station. Not too many details can be made out due to the way this concept was drawn, but we do have some broad strokes here. First, the character appears to be using a smartphone or whatever stand in we have for this universe. Could possibly be a device that the player also has access to as part of their toolkit, as a codex for information, to contact characters and receive communique. Other thing to note would be just how relaxed the character is, with even a cat sleeping with them. While spaceflight may be “flight in the 40s” dangerous, this concept speaks to it's routineness now.

A (supposed) family on a ship or station. Note the possible same black cat as in the previous concept. The male kind of looks like gordon freeman with the facial structure and glasses, don't think it's important but it just struck me lol. He wears an orange flight suit that looks almost exactly like a current nasa high altitude flight suit. The suits this was based on were not designed to be proper space suits, but instead to be worn inside a craft and to be more comfortable and agile while still providing some life support in the event of an emergency or depressurisation.

The kids shirt has a symbol that looks like two concentric diamonds with 7 stars above it. Note that both are walking not floating, meaning we have some form of artificial gravity here. Last character we have here is a floating robot performing repairs, decorated with a cowboy hat and pink stuffed animal backpack next to a triangular window design that we see in multiple locations, including the 2018 teaser ship. The design of the arms feels similar to vasco’s, andIam 99% sure that this is the same robot as in the very first “welcome to Constellation” concept art we looked at.Based on that, the very nasa design of the suit, and the happy, family, friendly atmosphere, i'm going to assume that this is something related to the “good guys” main faction Constellation.

In the background we have a potted plant, a wooden table, a leather chair, and a bunch of other artifacts to make the craft feel more homely. Last real important thing I noticed was this display screen. It's too low res to make out any real details, but maybe just maybe is a version of this UC logo? Not definitive as this one has the interior lines following the exterior rather than being vertical, but it's the closest logo i've seen.

An interior shot of a craft or ground based outpost / colony. Very similar to the outpost interiors in mass effect andromeda. Appears to be an science pod designated A2, based on the desk and sign in the background. The sign says this contains: “Lab 02” “Lab 03” “Clinic” and “Biology.” We also have a component that is labeled “Xiang” in the top right, possibly manufacturer or model.

This is a very weird image and it took my head some time to understand it. I first thought it was like a breakfast table with a little drone above it in the morning because of the weird scale and objects in the foreground. It looks like some industrial area, enclosed with some light coming in from an opening from the top. The center of the area is a large flat disc, with a ship parked on it and two people standing nearby. They looked like models at first but that's the perspective I believe. There is also a second ship hovering above. Overall not super detailed and we can't tell much about it.

Concept art of the inside of a ship based on the context in which it was shown (Into the Starfield 3). Very much the style of the ship we see in the teaser, the airlock door especially. We see a first aid box like the one in the teaser, and a keyboard that comes out of the wall. There is some lettering but none that really give any information. We do see a KB-215 and across it a KB-216, so they are component numbers.

Concept art of the crimson fleet based on the context in which it was shown (Into the Starfield 2). Very “Crimson” from the light produced by the welding. I can't tell what he is working on, appears to be somewhat transparent. The suit appears to be a foil metallic heat shield, similar to those for early American launches. We see plastic kegs of some kind, and interestingly one on the left is on fire, reminding me of the fire barrels in Fallout, but its placement here is certainly not OSHA approved. We also see what looks like an engine block suspended on chains above the workshop. Completely reading too much into this, but looks much more like a ground vehicle engine than anything for a spaceship. Also note the weird glowing “Logo?” in the top of the painting, feels oddly out of place with how vibrant it is.

Interior of presumably a home for the freestar collective / Akila City. Very much western sci-fi with the contents and wall material. Bottom left we see a rifle, then moving up a helmet or backpack perhaps, a cowboy hat, and a poster to visit neon, reminiscent of the poster in our ship in the 2021 teaser.  In the center of the room we have a desk with a monitor with rounded corners on the screen, a very uncomfortable looking chair, and a vest hanging nearby. Lots of indistinguishable pictures and items by the bed, but the sink next to the bed head is an interesting location for it.

Food Concept Art

Very much bento box vibes, with everything packaged up. Based on the logo under the handle we know these are made by the United Colonies. Makes me wonder and hope for some type of (possibly optional) actually interesting survival mechanics, or if this is just for worldbuilding.

I am glad I don't have to eat this food 😅. We've got worms, grubs, what looks like moss, some other things in the box I can't recognize, and whatever multiMeat is. Unfortunately I was not able to find any easter eggs from the qr codes. We have a package of worms by Full Food and a package of water by Crystal, both 300 centileters. Both on top say Nexum? Local, so they may both be under one manufacturer. Very much reminded of the expanse’s take on food in space, with most of it being mushroom derived and recycled for practicality, not for enjoyability.

Vasco Robot Concept Art

As stated in the meet vasco video section, I am almost certain that we will be able to modify vasco in a way precipitated by fallout 4s robomoding feature. These concept arts basically confirm this, as they all show vasco in wildly different configurations.

Less detailed models of vasco, our robot companion. In this, which im going to assume is his “base” configuration, he has two, somewhat digitigrade, looking legs with large pads, two long and thin arms with 3 fingers a piece, a single camera off to his right side for viewing, a boxy body, a large box on his left arm, unsure of it's purpose, and two cylinders in the back, which feels like to me will be a source of power, similar to the cylindrical RTG’s that current mars missions use.

A higher detail shot of the standard configuration, notably with a “factory new” paint instead of the Constellation paint we see in the in engine footage. Also note he is white and orange like the United Colonies colors in these concepts, not white and red for Constellation that we see in the in engine footage. He has text on his arms and the large left shoulder box, but eitherIcan't read it or it's the made up language used in some of the neon concepts.

A modified version of vasco, lets count all the changes here:

  • Teal Feet and thicker legs
  • Crotch light?
  • Left arm has a new beam with a light
  • Right arm has some type of railgun / rocket pods / weapon, with 4 clusters of 3 holes
  • Right arm also a black and white pauldron reading NavFe?
  • 4 Cameras for the eye instead of 5
  • Roll Cage and dome around the head
  • More of those rocket pods / weapons on the shoulder.

        More modifications here

  • Bottom one looks like a “standard” gun
  • Top one is an single eye with a cap to protect it

The body we see here is also different with

  • Thicker legs
  • Yellow Bars around head
  • Backpack on left shoulder
  • Other modifications to the body and arms, but this could just be because this is a more detailed concept

Here is the previous image with the backpack, winch, foot, and possibly repair tool highlighted. Also note that the pack on the back is not the twin cylinders here. So my list of areas on vasco that could be modified based on what I see here is:

  • Head
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Left and right arm
  • Left and right shoulder (could be combined with arm but think that the backpack at least would be seperate)
  • Left and right leg (could be combined into one leg or could be split and offer separate foot combinations)

There could be plenty more areas to modify, as well as misc modifications on top like for the repair tool and winch, (if they are not just standard tools)

Ship Concept Art

This shows the same ship as in the 2021 teaser, the Frontier NG (Nova Galactic?) 1350. The ship is smoking and being repaired by vasco while the player and a person rest next to a small structure. The structure looks like a platform with a possible telescope on it? Given the remoteness of this place, I see two scenarios:

  1. The player ship was damaged and landed at this remote outpost to repair and talk with the person there
  1. This structure doesn't look like a form of habitation, and there is nothing else around though.
  1. The player ship was damaged and forced to land, the small structure was set up by the player for them to use / rest at with their companion while vasco performs repairs.

Todd’s, To just sit there and watch the world go by’ comment rings strong here

This area is a rocky desert, with a larger planet in the background, noticeably, the planet seems cratered but in a weird artificial way? The craters don't overlap with each other, either is just a limitation on the art or they are that way for a reason.

The ship overall looks like it does in the teaser, with different colors being the main thing. We can see the ship's cargo bay which vasco is repairing, along with 4 large landing legs and landing engines. The ship has some ball shaped structures on it, which following along the real world space aesthetic would be used for storing liquid gasses, helium 3, hydrogen, or oxygen being the main contenders. The top of the skip appears to have an extendable circular docking port to be used to connect to ships and stations in space.

Here we see the first of three shots of a ship with the lettering “RS - 2556 A.” It very much reminds me of a star citizen ship called the endeavor, a modular ship with a cockpit, a modular body along a center spline, and a rear engine block.

One of the other concepts of this ship shows it better. From this view though we can the spine of the ship under it, which is a thin strip that goes from the cockpit and towards the engines.

Quick aside for the background, a planet with a nearby moon, this seems to be a common theme in these concepts, with other celestial bodies nearby, too nearby for realistic scale, and dominating the sky.

This shows the same ship flying over rings. If the scale of this picture is held, the rings are miniscule, but makes for a cool shot. Here we can see the better “spine and module” ideaImentioned earlier

This is how the possible customization looks to me. An engine block at the back, three custom rooms / pods, and one of the red lines designating the end of the pods and to the bridge. I could be reading too much into it and this ship could be just designed to look like that, but the instantIsaw this ship design my brain went “thats modular”

Final shot of that ship design, this time it's landing. Instead of 4 large engine blocks like we see on the ship in the teaser, this one has numerous maneuvering thrusters and a few larger ones to help it land. This feels much more advanced than the first ship, which looked like it wasnt many years ahead of current tech in the ways of engines.

A landed ship that says “STELLARIS (something) HC-46” This ship is more inline with the first one in design, with a large body and less spread out. It also contains what appears to be liquid gas tanks on the side as well. Its cockpit feels more industrial with its larger supports and beams breaking up the glass, but the original ship had this too. It lacks the large engines for landing, and it's rear engine block looks larger and has a lot of exposed struts and parallel plates.

A trio of ships flying in the upper atmosphere of a planet, with rings and a moon in the background. They have a cross designed engine block, the same center piece as the stellaris ship, a radar dish in the center, and a different module leading up to the exact same cockpit as the stellaris. The center piece being the same is excellently shown in this image by u/Money-Criticism-9990 here, but also note that the cockpit is the same too. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/unye3b/ship_customization_might_be_more_complex_than_we/)

Ship customization is something that excites me to no end, and i'm really hoping that the atleast give us a tiny look at it at e3.

Here we have the ship entering the ground we looked at earlier. It has 4 landing thrusters like the original ship, and two canted engines on the back, which are the same as the original ship from the trailer.

So that and the center chassis and cockpit of the stellaris have been found on different designs, hopefully meaning some kind of ship customization. This ship also has what appears to be a snub craft on it's back?

Could very well be imagining it, but looks like a miniature ship that isnt connected at the bottom hull to the main ship, with its own docking port on the top.

The same ship as previous but in a hanger now. The hangar looks amazing, with scaffolding and elevators, standardized cargo containers, upper rooms, a hospital on the left, and numerous crew working around our ship, with us in the foreground. The ship here is like I said the same as previous, but painted in white and gray instead of Constellation colors. IfIhad to pick a favorite concept art, this would have to be it, the whole vehicle shop is so exciting.

Finally for the ships we see a very detailed ship in space. It feels like either in game / engine or is a concept render; if this is hand drawn, props to the artist for sure. The cockpit is an odd geometrical shape, connected via a tube very similar to the international space station, and connected to something under the chin. This then branches up to a docking collar and out to two radiator / magnetic coil looking devices, and back to the rest of the ship. The ships center body again looks oddly segmented, with more docking modules coming out of it. Going further back, we have some kind of scaffolding, holding red solar panels, two large drums on the bottom which may be engines, one certain backwards facing engine, and two forward facing engines to slow the ship down. This is something that many more grounded science fiction ships have, as “flipping and burning” the main engine to slow down might not always be practical.

Overall, while this is definitely a ship based on the cockpit and engines, it's construction and solar panels remind me heavily of the international space station.

Based on it's construction, it would seem that it would not be suitable to enter an atmosphere, as it's far too delicate for the friction that would cause. The question is will the player be able to own ships that can't land on a planet's surface or will they be left to npcs?

E3 Poster Concept Art

Final piece of concept art. What I assume is the player with the helmet (or frankly could be a character), a woman who most assume is the person voicing the 2021 trailer, a man with a Constellation badge, and Vasco all feature here. We can assume that they will be in some way important to the story, or atleast Constellation. In the center bottom we have a lit planet with an artifact and in the center top we have an unlit planet. The artifact appears to be related to the one we saw drawings of earlier, with the jutting out shapes with flat or slanted tops.

In the center of the beam of light we see a ship

This ship appears to be built along a center spine, with 4 pods off to the side being the same, although one has a yellow canister on it, and the back two pods being engines. This feels very similar to the concept art of the RS - 2556 A ship we saw earlier, but is distinct, whether because it is or just because concept art changes is unknown.

An ending (for now)

Whew, after so many pages I've finally reached the end. I;m sure that there is more information that I've missed here, but with over 100 pages I hope that I got the majority of it. Creating this document has been a great experience trying to organize all the information we know about, and I can't wait to see what has changed when we see them in game. We might get a pre-e3 teaser trailer like Fallout 4 and 76 got, but with the delay everything is up in the air. If so ill make sure to append some analysis after this section. In addition, I'll likely clone this document and make a post e3 2022 doc adding everything we learn this summer.

If you've made it this far, I hope it wasn't too much of a bore 😅. If you saw anything egregiously wrong please tell me, 120 pages is a lot to proofread myself. I can't wait to see this community explode with the information we will end up learning at E3.

Until then, this is Gokamo signing out, i'll see you in the Starfield 😉

Ps: Todd please hire me lol

An Intro for those new

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to check this document out! If you are new here, before the xbox showcase this year, I created this document trying to catalog and analyze everything we had so far gotten officially (and a couple verified non official things) about Starfield. In it, I said that after I would update it with all the new information we got there. Why? Because God has cursed me for my hubris, and my work is never finished. But over an additional 250 pages here we are. If you didn't read the original pages, they are above this (if you are reading the full version), which may be useful for context, but I know that’s a lot of prerequisite work to ask, so i'll try to provide refreshers when I reference back to it. So without further ado, let's get into it.

(not) E3-2022 Gameplay Reveal

That was quite a lot wasn't it? 15 minutes of starfield content to dissect. I cant wait. So many systems that we thought wouldn’t be feasible / they wouldn't bother with made it in which is really exciting. A quick rundown of my favorites

  • Jetpacks!
  • Weapon’s visible on the character model!
  • 0g combat!
  • Dinosaurs?!?
  • Good looking diverse backgrounds and traits
  • Unlocking skills and ranking them up via use, a mix between skyrim and fallout 4
  • Researching and crafting upgrades and modifications
  • Settlement building from fallout 4 but much improved with an overhead camera
  • Ship building, even more modular than I predicted and hoped for!
  • MANUAL SHIP FLIGHT! (in space at least)
  • 100+ stars!
  • 1000+ planets!
  • Tons of biomes to explore, making good on a lot of concept art.

Overall I thought it was a great showcase, although I still have several questions that I would love to be answered, and maybe will be in the coming days / weeks / months. Also a couple reservation, but again overall thought it was great, definitely living up to being the most ambitious sandbox Bethesda have created ever.

The trailer is split into 5 main segments, those being:

  • Combat
  • Story
  • Customization
  • Spaceship combat
  • Exploration

Which is a good compartmentalization of what the game consists of. There are also intermissions before each of those sections with Todd. For this analysis I will be going chronologically through the entire 15 min video and making references to my previous write up and other sections in the video when appropriate. So without further ado, let's begin!

Introduction

We begin with the original quote that was modified to be in the 2021 teaser trailer.

The wonder is,

not that the field of stars is so vast,

but that man has measured it.

Anatole France, 1984

Anatole France was a nobel prize winning humanist french poet and writer.

We then hear narration which in contrast to the 2021 trailer, where the narration is ground control talking to the spaceship frontier, is coming from the frontier itself.

  • Control this is Constellation Starship Frontier
  • All ready to start on your signal
  • Maintaining exit vector course
  • Steady till ready(?)
  • Coordinates input, plotting jump course
  • Guidance has converged, we’re looking good
  • Allocating auxiliary reactor power, system checks are green across the board
  • Grav jump commencing in 5,4,3,2,1

Seems to fit in as the other half of the conversation we have in the 2021 trailer which for a reminder was

  • Constellation Starship Frontier, we have you on scanners.
  • Performing remote system check.
  • Helium 3 tanks check, seals are intact.
  • We are still [a] go.
  • We read you Constellation.
  • Start of the dialogue we got in this trailer right before this line, the controller is responding to them
  • Jemison route looks good.
  • Prepare for departure.
  • Graviton Loop Array Spool, check.
  • Space lanes clear.
  • Main engines go, ignition.
  • Good luck Constellation, you are go for launch.

Not much info from completing the conversation other than confirming the use of a gravity drive as their method of FTL space travel. I wondered if this was our character’s voice, but Bethesda has since confirmed no voiced protagonist on twitter here (https://twitter.com/BethesdaStudios/status/1536369312650653697)

We then get some brief words from Todd, but nothing more that what he has said in the past covered in the earlier document.

Combat Gameplay

We start the gameplay going to the moon of kreet to investigate an abandoned research outpost relatively early in the game. We will see later how we join Constellation, so I assume that that mission occurs relatively after joining their group as you have their ship and vasco, a Constellation robot with you. Seeing as how it's a small task, my guess is that it's their first mission they send you on as a somewhat test of your abilities.

We see the ship flying down in a canned animation like ones in mass effect andromeda when landing on a planet. When I saw this I feared that there would be space flight, but it seems that there are only no seamless transitions to planets / flying above their surfaces, which while would have been great, is an acceptable trade off to have what we see later on.

Kreet is a rocky, almost volcanic looking moon with all the black rocks. Here we can see coral like structures in the foreground, as well as a  red bush with many thin branches. We also have some smoke rising out from vents in the ground. In the bottom left we see the outpost we have to explore, with the roof section we will fight on later. This intro also names the planet as:

Kreet

Moon of Anselon

And the date being:

Sol Date: May 7th 2330

Which can either mean multiple time keeping systems, or more likely just acknowledging that dates in space are weird and somewhat meaningless as they change from planet to planet so we will just use normal earth time for convenience pleasedontthinkaboutittoomuchok.

A Lot of people have speculated that since implementing the entire Earth in this game would be very hard to do, Earth was destroyed or devastated by some event. Points pointing to this include the omega book in the 2021 teaser, a book about the end of the world by a comet, and the fact that earth is nowhere mentioned by Bethesda so far; the capital of the United Colonies (UC for new readers) is New Atlantis in Alpha Centauri, one star over from Sol. Notably the name, “United Colonies,” seems to be saying “we systems are united notably excluding the home system.” If Earth is gone, why still use Earth time, almost certainly for convenience for us used to earth time, or maybe historical significance in game, but it's an interesting point to think about.

We then get another look at our ship, which is similar to the 2021 trailer with the notable addition of weapons on the cockpit and above the engines and different paint.

Then we get our very first look at gameplay, in the same cargo bay as the 2021 teaser, with our good old ladder friend to our right. The 2018 leaks were definitely proven by this UI, and it's very cool to see how it developed. The right of the screen is mostly the same with the notable removal of a stamina bar, which appears to be moved into the O2 CO2 bar as we will see later, but the right symbol has changed a fair deal.

Also note the pistol we have is called a “SEMI-AUTO EON.”

We still have the O2 and CO2 ring denoting how much oxygen you have, but we now have a central display of the planet we are on, with the time of day shown as how much of the planet is lit, with this picture being right at sunrise/set, and later seeing a crescent and gibbous (don't know if these are the correct terminology for a moon that you are on but you get the idea). This is a larger version of one of the symbols in the leaked UI center, and the other functions have been moved elsewhere, as we see this symbol change to different variations later on so each function can be given adequate space. In Between those two we have a compass with north marked on the bottom left. Finally, we have an outer ring with the top segment highlighted and a marker top left. The marker is for the quest objective, and around the ring enemies will appear as red marks.

The circular nature of this display is due to the fact that this UI is supposed to be on the chronomark watch, and we have seen in the watch manual leak. The leak even has a display very similar to what we have here, albeit modified for the real world.

The player then toggles into another mode in order to scan a plant. Lots of good info on this screen so let's look at it all, although first let's note that the player switched to a red mining laser we will see later called a “CUTTER”.

Bottom bar has button to scan, establish an outpost with a cap of 30, either 30 per celestial body or system or the player has 30 outpost beacons in their inventory to place, a photo mode feature likely lifted from fallout 76, which I felt was one feature from that game really turned out well, and toggle a guide, which ifIhad to guess is this next section.

This section displays info about the planet you are on, in this case Kreet. Its traits are unknown, and I'm not sure exactly what these traits are. My best guess would be that they possibly tie into the procedural generation of planets, with planets sometimes having special traits that modify how they were generated. We see that we have scanned 5/8 resources, 0/0 fauna, and 0/2 flora. Interestingly this does not add up to 66.6% so not sure what's going on with the numbers, possibly fudged for the demo’s sake. We see our scan range is 50 meters, keep that in mind for later, and that the current biome is 50%, in contrast to the general survey being 66.6%. Does this imply multiple biomes per planet or can you find the same biome archetype on other planets?

The plant we just scanned is a dust root, and we have 13% scanned. This number is static after we scan the plant so we may have to scan it around 8ish times to fully mark it as scanned and then it will change the total survey percentage? Overall this scanning system reminds me the most of No Man’s Sky or Spore’s space stage strangely enough, with us going to planets and scanning the lifeforms on them. Overall it's a common mechanic for exploration, I just hope they can make this gameplay loop not feel like a chore and really make it feel like exploring.

We also get a popup saying 50% of kreet survey data was added, independent of the other ui elements, possibly this has to do with the quest we are on and not on scanning the whole planet? Don't think it matches with current biome 50%, as that number doesn't change when we scan, but this pops up.

Finally, the watch UI changes. We have a small version of the clock on the top, the name and designation of the body, and the temperature (assumedly in celsius as other measurements are in meters), oxygen percentage of the atmosphere (showing it is definitely not breathable here!), and gravity (assumedly measured in lowercase g, the gravity of Earth. For reference our moon is roughly .16g)

Despite the guide saying 0/0 fauna, there clearly is fauna on the planet? We see these small skittering trilobite looking creatures right after this and another crab creature, so i'm not sure why the display lists 0/0.

Here we wake up a Kreet Stalker along the path, another form of fauna. They aren't directly aggressive towards the player, and after a standoff they, and 3 of their friends, move along. They appear to be a version of this creature we got in a concept art earlier:

However note the vastly different biome these creatures are in. Four cases this could be:

  1. They made the concept for the creature and then moved it to Kreet instead.
  2. Kreet has multiple biomes, and the Kreet Stalker can be found in many of them, this leans into the “current biome” on the guide.
  3. This creature can be found on multiple planets. We could have a Kreet Stalker and a Jemison Stalker for example.
  1. We see another creature later on 2 planets(or at least 2 wildly different biomes) so this is the most likely answer.
  1. None of the above ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We then turn into a cave with green stalactites and an iron deposit. Note that the scan range is now 10km instead of 50m. The player then mines the iron with their mining laser (which doesn't use ammo, the mining laser can shoot and we see it far later down the road, and when in shooting it will assumedly use the ammo). This was the most No Man's Sky feeling part of the trailer, and while I enjoy mining in games that flesh the system out, I can envision a world where this becomes a grind. Fallout 4’s resource system was pretty unintrusive, as you loot a place just take everything that isn't nailed down and you get a ton of components, having to go out and mine may end up being a drag on the gameplay loop, or they may do it well, who knows at this stage.

We then get our classic Bethesda location discovered popup, as well as seeing the xp gain popup.

The outside of the lab is nothing to write home about, looks very much like the 2018 leaks, very much like a prefab outpost on a remote moon would be expected to look like. This one leaked image looks very similar to this outpost:

Here the player scans a crimson fleet ship, called a “Ghost.” This is the ship design from the 2018 builds (albeit with a different paint job)!

We also see it flying later, I was super stoked to see it actually in the game. Also note that since we are near the research facility location, in the scanning UI it says the location name on top.

It was here that it started to feel that the lighting was a little pale and blue? The lighting changes in different shots, especially on other planets, so it very well could be a thing based on the planet’s atmosphere, the star of the system, or the day night cycle, but at least on this world it felt just the slightest bit strong. If this is something that changes from planet to planet I'm all for it though, different lighting based on the star can do alot to make similar planets feel more different.

The player then pulls out the “GRENDEL” gun which has been analyzed to death by me, Odah, and everyone else as it was in the 2021 teaser so I won't repeat that here. However, switching to it we see the quick select menu, based on fallout 4’s cross instead of fallout 76’s wheel, which in my opinion I preferred. Note the triangle symbol next to the name with 5, I'll get back to that.

Entering the facility we see this room which looks reminiscent of this concept art piece, down to the red lights and hanging chains.

Going through the next rooms we see a biohazard sign, possibly related to the creature we see later.

The player also passes a health and safety sign, with the interesting bottom text all but illegible, but I can make out a radiation symbol.

Also about 2 frames of the health kit we have in our ship storage bay but green instead of red.

The player turns the corner to see two crimson fleet pirates around a glass display case. You can hear them say “... Hold them off here while Brogan sets up on the roof”. Brogan is a named pirate we will see later in the demo, fulfilling a similar role to Gristle in Fallout 4, a namer raider commander during an early quest. On the left there is a star system model with 5 planets, and a science device with holes and what look like test tubes in the holes. This model may also be a gas giant named Olivas we see later as it has 5 moons. Note the bottom left UI showing two red marks indicating the enemies.

Once detected, the bottom left UI flashes red to indicate it, and when the player shoots, more red marks appear, seemingly alerted by the sound. We also get a look at the health bar for enemies, which is now above their model instead of the top of the screen. The pirate outfits are very faithful to the crimson fleet concept armor we saw, with a mix between low tech expanse style belter space suits and almost religious looking robe type clothes.

The player takes them down, and they feel to be more bullet spongey than the comparable raiders in the Fallout 4 gameplay trailers, and these two don't seem to have any reaction to being shot which feels slightly off, although other enemies do react so possibly is just not finished being polished.

Right as the pirate runs up to us we see a confirmation of pickpocketing

And when the pirate with a knife is killed, we see the quick loot menu from Fallout 4, but there is nothing in it that we see the enemy is carrying. Hopefully this is just for the demo, as being able to loot everything that an npc was wearing and using was a great source of immersion in past games.

We don't get a good look at what's in this case, but it doesn't look like something good.

Also this may be another body in the background, seemingly with blood around, not killed by us, either by the crimson fleet or whatever caused this facility to be abandoned. Or could just be some piping.

Another green medkit right after the scene changes.

The player then starts to sprint, which drains the O2 CO2 meter. While possibly still being used for losing oxygen from a suit tear or the like, it also measures the co2 buildup from stressful activities, with your suit / pack taking time to refill the oxygen in it. Basically, this bar is your stamina bar from the other games.

The player then does a short sprint into slide, and takes down another enemy, who is staggered by being shot before throwing a grenade at another enemy. They then proceed up the stairs and finish off the third enemy with a break action shotgun called a “COACHMAN” after missing nearly all their shots with the grendel.

When switching to the coachman, we see the same triangle symbol as we had with the grendel, but this time we have 90.

Not quite sure what these could be, as they are certainly not ammunition, they kind of remind me of some kind of mastery points or modification points for a weapon to upgrade it?

Also this pirate's armor is less robed than the earlier ones and has a clear helmet.

\

On the wall we see a UC logo implying they worked the base before it was abandoned.

Going into another room marked as biohazard, we get our first lockpicking minigame, with a novice lock.

The player has 15 “Digipick'' lockpicks, and there are two circles, with missing segments. We then have a selection of pairs of segments that we have to fit into the missing holes, and when one layer is full the next opens up. Reminiscent of other Bethesda lockpicking minigames and others like mass effects but has its own identity. Given this is only a novice nock and has 3 pairs of segments to fill, master level locks may take a lot of time. When opening the case, we see a laser weapon called an “EQUINOX” inside, but interestingly we see the weapon in the case’s inventory before it opens as well as the physical item.

Moving on we then see a seemingly man made horror that seeing as we get attacked by it later on, i'm betting escaped and caused this facility to be abandoned in stereotypical sci fi fashion.

It seems to be created from captured alien dna.

The text says:

Experimental Analysis of Selected Clone Cell

  1. Heterogeneous Cell to be extracted from captured specimens
  2. Tumor Growth + something else
  3. Selective effects + something else
  4. Illegible
  5. Illegible but has a red blue and green key

Feel like this will end up tying into some quests / the alien dna background we see later.

The player then steps out onto the roof to confront 3 pirates, 2 of which dash for cover.

One of the pirates is named Brogan, the one we heard about before, and is level 6, and is assumedly the leader of the gang. Note that the Equinox looks very similar to a fallout 4 laser rifle, with the boxy design, albeit less exagerated.

It was here when the frustration at the person playing the game started to get to me 😅. I don't know why every single game demo has to have someone playing it who plays like they are a robot who has never played a game before. I get the desire to make it smooth and cinematic, but it just makes the actual gameplay we care about feel clunky. I really can't judge how combat will actually feel as standing still and hip firing a few feet to the left of the enemy is not at all how it will actually play out in game. The Doom 2016 demo did this prominently too, with the demo gameplay being so much slower and less interesting than the actual gameplay was, so I will definitely want to see more gameplay. Fallout 4’s demo also had this to some degree, and I think I can feel this being a moderate upgrade from that combat system which I enjoyed, so not too worried, but again, would love to see more as the release date comes closer.

Also note the blueness of the whole scene again, again feeling that it is something unique to this planet as other shots don't have it, so I wont mind it.

After killing the pirate leader, we have a dropship land and deliver more pirates. This ship is the same design as before and the same as the leaked ship. Our quest updates, with the name of the quest being “one small step,” an obvious reference to Neil Armstrong’s quote upon landing on the moon.

The logo on the left is a constellation one, maybe just because we are constellation or maybe it will change based on what group we are doing the mission for.

As we move towards the landing ship, a pirate casually walks out with his back towards us, gets shot in his jetpack, which explodes and sends him flying. Not the greatest show for the intelligence of the AI but they wanted a shot that showed off the jetpack unique death animation.

And we were right it was a jetpack! When flying a boost meter appears above the character's health as fuel for the jetpack.

They then do a second boost in the air to get closer to the ship, which is nice that it's not just a higher jump. The player also switched to a new gun, a ballistic smg called a “MAELSTROM

The player then ADS with the maelstrom, fighting the pirates that came out of the ship before this segment ends. The question is will you be able to enter these ships that have landed for reinforcements or will they fly away or will a hatch be locked in the cargo bay preventing you from entering further? Seeing as we see boarding enemy ships later, I'm holding out hope for the former.

I very much like seeing the ammo count on a lot of weapons, that combined with a lot of the information looking like it's on the watch makes me hope for a survival mode with no hud, like metro’s ranger modes, or atleast the capability to use as much physicalized UI as possible. In that game's ranger difficulties, all the UI you had was physicalized, with a watch in your wrist you could raise up to see information.

Overall a good but slightly rough combat section due to the aiming, inconsistent hit reactions both for the player and enemies, and enemy AI in general. It's still early on for time for more polishing, I expect some bugs from Bethesda, and I don't trust the person controlling the player to give a good feel of the combat, so overall am not worried. It looks to be similar to Fallout 4 and that was pretty much all I needed, the other systems are what makes a BGS game fun. And while this segment was pretty good, the other three are leagues ahead.

Intermission 1

Soon after the start of the game, you are invited to join Constellation, reiterated like we have heard so many times before as “The last group of space explorers.” They are headquartered on New Atlantis and we get a story trailer.

Story Trailer

Just a little forward here, I'm dividing this story trailer into 4 acts, and then discussing the narration at the end of each act to get a nice compromise between being relevant chronologically and not getting lost in all the other details.

Act 1: New Atlantis and Constellation

We start with our ship landing at New Atlantis, an image which invokes thoughts of these two pieces of concept art, with the ship down on a pad with the city further up a mountain. On the right we see the area we will see in the 3rd shot from this scene.

An overview shot of New Atlantis, very similar to this concept art. Both have a rounded raised structure that is hollow in the middle, but it now has a large tower on top of it.

In the background we see a UC Distribution center, and a building that says Gal(Bank? eria?). We see the gardens we will see closer later, as well as the flat canopy trees we saw in the concept art.

Trying to look in the background, there appears to be a sheer drop off into foggy mountains? Perhaps the city’s location on a mountain will prevent the player from just walking to the city and make them have to land there.

We then see an area at the spaceport right near where our ship landed.

Here it is from the earlier shot. Lots of text so let's go through it.

“Welcome to New Atlantis” “(Capita)l of the United Colonies Est(established) 2161”

  • “Warning! Active Launch Pad, Do not proceed. Trespassers will be prosecuted ”
  • “Pad A <<<”
  • “Notice to visitors. No entry for passengers without valid visa for interplanetary travel. Prohibition on audio-visual recording without permission of UCSS”
  • Maybe this is why Constellation is the last group of space explorers, it's restricted and many people don't bother with traveling the stars.
  • UCSS is likely “United Colonies safety and security” as we see that on a wall.
  • “Arrivals proceed to security screening >>>”
  • Will we actually have to go through security or will our Constellation membership wave that for us?

  • “< Hotel & Shopping, Interstellar Inn”
  • “^ NAT, New Atlantis Transit”
  • Some form of inter city transportation system, vivec had gondolas to help move around so New Atlantis may have something too. Or this could be a line just from the landing area to the main area.
  • “> UCSEC, United Colonies Security & Safety”
  • Different from UCSS, why have two acronyms?

  • “Welcome to New Atlantis… Security checkpoint…. You will be scanned”
  • Security could just be a laser wall we run through and only stops us if we have contraband

  • “ < Arrivals proceed to security screening”
  • “All Bags subject to search, all threats taken seriously”
  • “> Pad B”

  • “(illegible), (illegible) spacecraft can cause physical harm, (illegible) (underneath?)”
  • “Beware of Ro(ckets?) Rocket blast of departure (illegible) resulting in extreme (illegible) by order of the civil spaceflight (obscured)”

We then get a shot of the gardens, complete with obligatory modern art, which is a lot more lived in feeling than in the concept art, which I like, although maybe the saturation or brightness could use a little boost, I go back and forth on this alot.

Guards walking in the gardens, they have armor numbered 74, what appears to be the Equinox rifle from before, and the closer has a patch with a unique design saying united colony, notably singular, colony not colonies.

In the background we see a sign for what appears to be a residential(maybe Industrial?) district and multiple npcs staring at a pillar marked NNSS or SSNN, probably Settled Systems News Network, as we see this object later in Neon.

What appears to be an ad for a “Trident” perhaps with stylized Ts?

And finally the banners from the concept art, although with many variations, possibly the colonies in the United Colonies? One with a star im assuming is new atlantis for the capitol, then we have ones with cogs, snowflakes, and lightning bolts. It looks like 6 total designs before they repeat.

Headed towards Constellation’s headquarters, overgrown in a seemingly deliberate way. Their compound feels older than the other structures, which is apt for an organization with a large focus on past artifacts.

Also note the two star shaped symbols on the door here.

We see the chronomark watch in action, prompting the user to hold it up to unlock the door. The detail on the arm is also very very nice.

After holding it up the screen switches to a padlock, and the frame before it's fully lowered changes again to the default view with O2 CO2 and planet day/night we saw earlier.

Our first shot of Constellation’s headquarters, similar in style to the concept art for the room we got inside the station, with all the wood and artifacts.

4 People are in this room that we get close ups of later. Among the books we have:

A sailing ship, which based on the white strip of paint is an early US navy ship, possibly the USS constitution, since that ship is the oldest american warship surviving today and features in Fallout 4.

A table with rails and what looks like small balls on it? I get slight vibes similar to the table with balls in outer wilds to demonstrate the gravity of the moon.

A portrait of who I have to assume is the leader of Constellation given the halo and all.

Two other portraits that we will see up close later, and other objects we get better looks at later so i'll save them for then.

Our first time talking with a character, and thank god the facial animations are improved over Fallout 4. Not perfect of course, but in Fallout 4 and before I avoided looking at faces in general and just read subtitles. This person appears to be the leader of Constellation, given the dialogue we are given here, narration of the 2021 teaser, and her prominent position on the top left of the poster.

We then have another member of Constellation, but no other information about them is given. More importantly we see close ups of the two portraits, a device with a loop which I know i've seen somewhere but I can't find it for the life of me please if anyone knows lmk I think it's some kind of loop antenna, and a spacecraft, which i'm 99% certain is vostok 1, the ship that carried Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space.

We then see another man who we dont get much information about standing next to a door to a greenhouse / sunroom area. (he keeps reminding me of gman tho lol)

And finally our 4th Constellation member, holding what looks to be a “pip-pad” type device, possibly (kinda likely given the seam on one side and gray ends) this one we see on the table of our ship in the 2021 teaser.

We also see a ship in the background and in a shot soon after, but after a lot of searches for famous exploration ships I couldn't find it, again if you recognize it please lmk! It's Jacques Cousteau’s ship, a renowned oceanographer! My dad had a newspaper about him hanging up in my house for my entire life and I don't know how I missed it! Credit to u/Optimistic_Human for pointing that out!

When we got this shot was when I knew we were going to have procedural generated planets, as everything about this terrain screams procedural to me. The trees, bushes, rocks and pebbles scattered along a smooth slope is not something you would see in a previously hand crafted Bethesda world, but it does look more realistic. I go back and forth on the procedural debate, but overall for a space game to truly explore unvisited worlds I think it will work well. Also note the detail on that sky texture, the wonders you can see without light pollution huh?

Constellation members around a holographic table discussing the artifacts that are the catalyst for the story. The rough outline for the plot we hear via the narration is to travel around the Settled Systems hunting these artifacts. Maybe not unique, but perfectly good to me, I always like searching for artifacts. Constellation really is like Indiana Jones huh?

A shot of our character approaching an artifact embedded in a rock. We know this is us based on the narration and that we go first person soon. Take note of the suit we are wearing, and how it's not the Constellation standard suit, we will see this suit later on other miners.

Another shot of us approaching the artifact, note the floating weird metal like chunks floating due to the artifact.

Now we are first person in our character and reach towards the artifact. Note the outline of the artifact piece that matches the holo table, but it has “corrupted” the stone around it with the weird metal. This looks like 4 things to me, 2 references and 2 starfield things.

1, mass effect andromeda’s rem tech with the weird dark metal look

2, also looks like the expanse’s protomolecule made ring station, and the protomolecule in the expanse functions more like this artifact as I'll talk about when we go over the audio.

3, the diagram in our ship during the 2021 trailer with the blocky aesthetic

And 4 this concept art piece that I and a good few others predicted being related to number 3. In this concept it appears to be a whole planet made of the stuff the artifacts are made of, likely significant in the main story.

After the character reaches out, the same FTL effect we see in the 2018 teaser and at the end of this demo plays, leading to believe that they could be some kind of FTL gateway device for a long dead (or sleeping or distant) civilization.

Now that we reached an ending to what I feel is the first arc of this trailer, ill discuss the audio we’ve heard.

  • Welcome to Constellation, we have a lot to talk about
  • General welcome, we have a lot to talk about because of what we found. Why we found it will be discussed later, but there seems to be enough threads to weave the start of the game together.
  • We’re all here because we're committed to the biggest question of all. What's out there?
  • Reiterating their focus on exploration and discovery
  • These artifacts could be everything we’ve been looking for.
  • Why are they looking for these artifacts? If they are FTL tech, why do we need them if we have grav drives? Are we confined in the Settled Systems by the nature of the grav drive? Or is it just much faster, point to point gateways? Or does it lead to a whole new section of the galaxy? Or does the Constellation just want to spark interest in exploration and relics can do that / love exploration so much and exciting relics are this important.
  • As to what they are, what they’re building
  • These artifacts are building something, that something we see at the end of the trailer it seems. Now, SPOILERS FOR THE EXPANSE UP TO BOOK 3 AND HALF WAY THROUGH SEASON 3 AHEAD. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T READ / WATCHED AND PLAN TO (you really should it's one of my favorite sci-fi universes)
  • In the Expanse, the major plot device is something called the protomolecule, a substance found in phoebe that hijacks life. It's originally assumed to be a bio-weapon from an alien race, but glossing over a lot of details, it ends up being a road building tool to create gateways. It is sent out in contaminated asteroids to possibly life-bearing planets, hijacks the life there, and eventually uses them to create a ring gate that connects to a network of other gates. Based on the “what they’re building” line, i'm assuming they are trying to build some device, possibly gateway related, but if they will be that malicious (though the protomolecule is more uncaring than malicious, a great quote by the main character being “It doesn’t care about us…anymore than we care about anthills we pave over…”) is unknown, but unlikely based on what I see here.
  • SPOILERS OVER NOW
  • You'll be part of solving that puzzle now
  • Pretty explicitly giving us the main quest.

Act 2: Artifact’s part 2

We then see what looks to be our ship, or a ship of the same design as the frontier landing.

Afterwards a character walks up to us, we know it's us as we see from their perspective next. Note the Argos Extractor suit we are wearing here, not the Constellation suit, this shot is before we join Constellation. We start as a member of Argos Extractors as we will see later, dig up the artifact, and then join Constellation, and i'll do a whole timeline of what I believe the intro for the story is too.

We then get a close up on this guy (who’s name was found to be Barret thanks to u/blackvrocky finding it in a twitter image’s alt text) wearing the Constellation standard suit. I believe that he could be the other person in the poster we got last year, in the bottom left. More to say on this guy in the story chronology later.

We then get a beautiful shot of Akila city, which some people have already jokingly compared to space whiterun, given the tundra, wheat fields, walls, and tall central building.

We see in the foreground by the crops the same spherical towers from the concept art, given their position I would assume have something to do with agriculture / hydroponics? They also appear to have center pivot irrigation systems like we see in real life.

For akila itself, we have the tall outer wall with guard posts and a side outer gate, as we will see the main gate later. It also looks like we have a secondary inner wall and bridges connecting the two walls. Overall feels like a much more elaborate fortified design than you’d see in skyrim for example.

We also see a large blue awning stretching off the back of the central building in the city, maybe for a market, although we do see a market type street in front of the building later.

Finally note we can see what appears to be our ship from the rear here, based on the canted engines.

The Player on a orange dusty barren planet at an industrial mining pit designated 08. It may be too early to call it, but this really really feels like Mars, although the shot with a Mars rover later is less orange, and a planet named Moloch I is more orange like this. Whether that is the weather or indicating this is a different planet is unknown. We see this area from another angle later, so my bet is on it being a main quest location because of that, possibly another artifact being found in another mine. (Looking from that other angle we see a label saying Cydonia. Cydonia is a region on mars, and mentioned in the 2021 teaser with “Reminder:Cydonia security does NOT have a sense of humor…” Perhaps Cydonia is the 4th major city and is on mars. It may be more isolationist and stereotypically militaristic for mars, leading to it not having much reach outside of sol, but having a firm grasp on their home system. More cydonia speculation later on)

Looking at the suit, two things strike me. One is the bulky backpack with a huge jetpack. The other is the redness of the outfit, it could be Constellation and their red, but Constellation so far have been more white with red accents. Could red suits be martian / Cydonian?

This is a shot we see later with where we are now circled, it appears we just got off from a landing pad.

A location we haven't seen before called “Paradiso.” Given the name, tropical flora and sharply dressed people walking around, I assume that this is some kind of resort, with the narration implying an artifact may be around here.

There is some text here but the weird font and low resolution makes it illegible. Best guess is EN(?)(?)NO

Ah Neon my beloved. You can see overhead the large yellow tinted dome present in both neon concepts.

Really got a good cyberpunk aesthetic down for this city

We see a billboard for the Vol II or (VolII) hotel. We later see a star system called VOLII later in the showcase, so it's likely that's the system neon is in. If this is Vol II (Vol 2) or Volii is still in question

  • Points for Vol II
  • The way this sign is stylized with the large two lines
  • Points for Volii
  • Everything is capitalized so we can't tell if these are I or I
  • Why isn't there a space after Vol on the starmap, when other planets and systems have a space
  • Main reason I'm leaning to volii now, but that sign is weird.

We then have a medical facility called reliant medical

Maybe a (dan)ce! place?

A spaceport terminal for neon’s intercity transport like New Atlantis had.

The same SSNN pillar as in New Atlantis.

Ominous “they are coming” message, maybe alien life, maybe neon corporate overlords.

We also have this design for a sign, which I have no idea what it is.

And finally we have this poster to see “The neon legend,” with the bottom text possibly saying Borealis?

Also I find it funny there is a guy sitting right under a danger sign lol.

Then we get a shot of a very run down station. I'm not sure where this is. The officer walking towards the camera’s vest says UCSEC, so this area is controlled by the United Colonies, but the graffiti and overall condition makes me feel like it is not a stronghold of their support, possibly a far out station / outpost? Reminds me a lot of grim hex or levski from star citizen. There is a lot of graffiti around, most being illegible, maybe one on the far left says “Don't eat?”

This guard is wearing some kind of heavy police armor with UCSEC on it

On the right there is also another person with a UC outfit.

A medical clinic, much more run down than the one we see in neon.

The one graffiti we can see clearly is a UC knife with an imperialist arm killing a cartoon creature, which assumedly represents the author’s group. That raises the question why that depiction, or was it just easy to draw?

A sign that feels very transhumanist, with binary saying “2” in modern ascii or unicode. I don't know if we will still be using those formats in 2330, but it looks like it. Very interested to find out what this means, with a tree of people all going into the mind of one possible robot looking drawing.

Finally we have something that looks like a UC recruiting poster.

A shot from the front of akila city. The large building in the center is our guide for piercing these shots together, and since we don't see the big awning as in the first shot, that shot must have been ~180 degrees on the opposite side of the city.

A store called shepherd’s in a very western font with either the owner or a worker sitting outside it. The sign reminds me a lot of a western general store, like the one in goodsprings.

A weapons store called Rowland Arms.

A small covered leisure area behind rowland arms. I just have to say that the detail in akila is amazing, all these little things making the city feel like one i've been to but sci-fied. And with this crazy detail level, based on the overhead shot it still looks to be significantly bigger than almost all of their other hand crafted cities (maybe the imperial city or vivec are close).

The main building of the city, with a copper statue outside to the left. It has what feels like a star destroyer bridge up at the top, assuming for a significant room. Also note the planet in the background, seemingly also being habitable with the green land and seas.

What looks like a restaurant called “The Hitching.” Like the covered area I swear I've been to restaurants that look exactly like this with the railing and netted roof and I think cooling fan near the center of the image.

Our character approaching some important person reclining on a couch in what appears to me a museum / trophy room / makeshift throne room. First thing to note is that this may be the same location as the image before last, as we see the same person with the UC logo on the left side of this image, although that could possibly be just reused npc models.

We then have statues of what appear to be one female and one male Greek(?) deity, although the shield has strange sci-fi lines on it. If I had to guess I would guess the woman is Athena with the tablet, and the male is Ares with the spear and shield.

We then have 5 people in space suits (not including us)

These 4 look very much like the crimson fleet or violent spacers, with the middle one being almost definitely crimson fleet based on the robe, which for a reminder was seen in the concept art.

The 5th person seems to have much sleeker armor, either a special character, a mercenary, or maybe the crimson fleet just has more diversity.

We can’t make out much of the character in the back or the person to his left, but from the lack of hair I don't think he is the collector we see in the next scene.

On the left we have another soviet spacecraft, possibly vostok 1 like we saw in the Constellation headquarters, and on the right maybe a heat shield or mars rover top of capsule?

Some type of rock or meteorite in the background

And finally a whole terracotta warrior. It seems like more groups than just Constellation are after old earth artifacts.

We then get a shot of a collector or curator, who has acquired one of the artifact pieces we are looking for. In the background we have display cases for a rock and plant. I absolutely love this guy, how he dresses, how he talks, everything. His suit is almost comically ostentatious, with all the gold and the jewelry. We also see the very much improved facial animations with him talking here.

A shot further down the same neon street we saw earlier, aren't able to read anything new, all the signs on this side of the street are too angled. And after this shot we stop being about locations and the artifact and start being about factions so ill end act 2 here. So let's go over the dialogue.

  • So, you found something?
  • Talking about finding the artifact
  • The new guy found it.
  • We are the new guy, new at our job at argo extractors as a miner where we found the artifact, with a whole timeline coming later.
  • You dug up the artifact right? That means you saw it, the visions?
  • The artifact causes some kind of visions, like the prothean beacon from mass effect.
  • The artifact you found appears to be one of many, scattered across the galaxy. If we can find more, we can unlock their secrets.
  • Details on the main quest, traveling around the settled systems and finding these artifacts.
  • Beautiful isn't it? The man who sold me this told me that it spoke to him.
  • Love this guy's delivery, and reinforcing the visions. Also this is belethor from skyrim and nick from fallout 4’s voice actor.

Act 3: The Factions

We then see the office of someone who looks like a teacher, with the construction style feeling most like the UC.

We have this leaked sign on the wall. Does this mean the space nation alliance and or starfield alliance are in the game or is this just a random placeholder decal?

Happy solar system, one reason it feels like a teacher’s office.

A comic style motivational poster, also giving it a teacher vibe.

Some coral like rock or fungal object

A glove model for an asteroid or comet type object.

Weird squid thing? I won't highlight all the objects, but there is also a solar system model and Newton's cradle behind the person.

Crimson fleet members with an equinox laser gun. Not much to detail here other than they have the same helmets and suits as the concepts.

The crimson fleet Landing at an argos extractors location, as we see their AE logo.

While we would think we are the person in the Constellation suit, we are not, as we see in a later shot. This further helps the presumed start that I and some others think: We start as a member of argos extractors, a mining group, we find the artifact, Constellation is contacted, the crimson fleet arrives after them, possibly kills the Constellation member and we take their equipment and ship and head to their hq, or they survive and we go there together.

Not too much different in the next shot, but note the npc who didn't get the memo they were under attack and is just standing on the left. We also see a character taking cover next to something that has treads that remind me of fallout 4’s sentry bot.

Again the spaceship design is the leaked one, seems to be a standard pirate ship (if that isn't an oxymoron)

The crimson fleet rushing out of their ship, equipped with equinox lasers. Note that this group is significantly more gilded than the others, perhaps we will have distinct subfactions? Also note that this facility is designated as 09, like the 08 facility we saw on (not?)mars

A member of UCSYSDEF (United Colonies System Defence) With nice facial animations. Based on the accent and job, we can assume that this is Commander Kibwe Ikande, a name we saw on a document in an “into the starfield” video as a contact for SYSDEF.

Here we see him in his command center. Tons of illegible panels, a large panel behind him seemingly showing ground maps, and an aid to his right. Also given the into the starfield document, this quite possibly may be aboard the UC Vigilance, which gives me hope for big capital class ships due to the size of this space.

Finally note that this guy has the same helmet as the UC guard in New Atlantis with the same 74 but a different color. Will we be able to dye our armor like ships? (also he is just awkwardly frozen there in that shot like the other background characters lol)

Here we have our player charging towards the pirates that just landed, and unholstering a ballistic gun called an “AR-99.” We know this is us because we go first person in the next shot. Again, note that we are in the argos extractor suit, not the Constellation suit.

A side shot of the AR-99, showing that it's made by Allied Armaments, using caseless 11.75x45mm ammo, another weird cartridge size like for the grendel.

First person view of the last shot. On the left we see someone using the mining laser that we used in the combat gameplay as a weapon, likely using the ammo counter we saw there that wasn't used when mining with it. We also have a decent shot of the argos extractor’s suit that was one of the leaked suits.

A shot of the front game of Akila City (I'm assuming because of its prominence).  Note that we appear to have a wooden wall in front of the stone wall

Based on the large building orientation and the planet in the back, we can deduce that this shot is right behind the second shot of Akila city in the street.

We then get a sign saying “Welcome to Akila City, Est.(established) 2167 by Solomon Coe”, which is just 6 years after New Atlantis was established. Possibly the grav drive was established shortly before that leading to a burst of colonization? Or some other event kicking off the spread of humanity out from Sol.

We also get a Freestar banner, with their geometric eagle and star.

We then get a shot of either an official of or the leader of the freestar collective. And he looks exactly like I thought he would for a leader of space pioneers, very starwarsy and lots of leather. He also has 3 badges on his left side. Note how in every dialogue scene we get, we are close in with a blur in the background. I'm assuming that that is how dialogue will be in game, different from Skyrim and Fallout 4 where it was just the normal camera (though Fallout 4 also had a cinematic camera). Somewhat reminiscent of oblivion, and with the blur reminiscent of outer worlds.

The interior of the freestar collective headquarters, which may be called “The Rock,” as tbh that's what this structure looks like, a rock.

This here might be the Ashta that was mentioned in the Akila City video earlier, a cross between a velociraptor and a wolf.

Finally we have an armored creature we also see later with the caption “Feeding the front lines,” possibly livestock?

A crimson fleet pirate, this time with a skull face plate on. Their base very much encapsulates the “Crimson” part of their name.

The crimson fleet command center with that written on the floor. Much more ragtag than the UCSYSDEF one, and a skull jolly roger hanging in the center. Screens are too far away to make out. Is this a station or ship?

A high ranking member of or the leader of the crimson fleet. Reminds me very much of Marco Inaros, the leader of a violent group from the outer planets, from the expanse, and the next shot even more.

This shot I swear i've seen in the expanse, and I love it for that. The low tech suits here look almost exactly like the suits that the people living in and past the asteroid belt, the belters, wear. Note the gold trim on the left one’s suit, but not on the right one’s. Also note the hair physics when this character is shot, looks like we will get that straight out of the box with the new physics reworks.

Also the knife that the right person was using says “United Colonies,” they possibly could have been a spy or assassin? In the second into the starfield video it mentioned being like a double agent in the crimson fleet. Or maybe pirates don't care where they get their goods and this is just classic pirate cutthroat-ness.

And then the narration goes back to the head of Constellation so let's wrap up act 3 with the dialogue.

  • Of course the Settled Systems is full of groups with other priorities.
  • Factions are always great, hope to see more interactions between the faction quest lines than in more recent days. I absolutely love morrowind for the amount of factions and their conflicting quests.
  • That's the crimson fleet! Get Ready!
  • Just character dialogue when fighting.
  • The fleet doesn't follow the rules. Agree to work for UC SYSDEF. Together we take down these cutthroat pirates.
  • The fleet seemingly refers to the Crimson fleet. This is the pitch to join sysdef, probably after the character has gotten the notice we saw Emil working on in the into the Constellation video which says for those unfamiliar:

United Colonies logo at the top]

[SysDef logo below it to the left] [UC Vanguard logo below it to the right]

Urgent Communique’

Please Be on Alert

Pirates of the Crimson Fleet have extended far beyond the Kryx system and have established footholds in the Sagan, Cheyenne, Lunara and Narion systems. Both SysDef and the Vanguard are committed to ridding United Colonies space of these parasites.

New Atlantis - Planet Jemison - Alpha Centauri

  • We’re not just here to shoot the bad guys, we’re peacekeepers. We protect the people of the Freestar Collective.
  • Having to say that first line means the impression they give off is just wanting to shoot bad guys. The accent really screams that space western fantasy they talked about.
  • When you sign up with the crimson fleet, no one quits. The only way out … is death.
  • Hardcore pirates joining rules, while it was already confirmed you could join the crimson fleet it's nice to see it in universe.

 Act 4: Back to Constellation

Here we see ecliptic mercenaries climbing the stairs on a frozen over base.

I absolutely love these guys armor and can't wait to get my hands on it (even if we have to kill them like we had to for elder maxon’s coat)

Up close to the camera we see someone dead, in the similar looking armor to this set, albeit with some white straps. They also have what looks like the mining laser near them

0 G COMBAT BABYYYY! I can only pray that it is used more than once for a scripted story mission, please Todd give this to me. Our character is wielding a Maelstrom while the pirate wields the eclipse.

Our character fighting some alien creature with a new gun. We don't have the name for it, but it seems like it fires 25 rounds in a mag. The square holes and lightning bolt symbol makes me think it's an energy weapon. The terrain is generic snow and rocky area, but with weird muscle like plants.

The alien reminds me of a Fallout 4 fog crawler with the large head, but it has pincers, 4 arms, and a back like a dinosaur. We see what looks like this creature later in in a completely different biome.

Here we get a taste of classic alien-esque space horror with the creature we saw on the whiteboard running down the hall.

First person combat with the same horror. The museum of witchcraft was such a memorable moment in fallout 4, really hope they get a location with the same horror vibe and love and attention in starfield.

Seemingly Constellation (based on the context of the narration and the white and red paint) trying to extract something out of a rock.

It's really hard to see, but if I full screen the original video and look at my monitor from a weird angle, I think I can just barely see something that looks like the artifact sticking out from behind the glow? It's not a very important detail and we already know Constellation is looking for these artifacts and at least one was found embedded in a rock so I won't dwell on it.

Here we have 2 people in argos suits mining with the mining laser we have seen a good few times. This is most likely in the prologue and where we find the first artifact that starts off our journey. Again, full timeline coming later (Right at the start of character creation as that holds the last piece of evidence)

Here we have two other argo’s miners suiting up a helmet and backpack. The most interesting thing about this shot is the audio which we will get to in just a bit, but again I think this is part of the prologue, where we are the new miner and they are more experienced workers.

Our character in a crystal cave. They appear to have the same backpack / suit as the shot on (not) mars, with the large single thruster for the jetpack. Note on the left what appears to be an elevator, similar to the one we saw the characters in in the previous shot. This scene also looks very much like this piece of concept art.

Ok this is the piece that I have been waiting to analyze since the trailer dropped. Having been to the Kennedy Space Center dozens of times having grown up near it, this shot looks like home. Obviously this is a museum / exhibit for old earth artifacts. That raises the question of “Where is this?.” Here are 5 options:

  1. This is on Earth in an old dilapidated museum. This would explain the debris all around the floor as well as part of the space station that has fallen down, but we haven't seen anything else of earth so far. Given that Todd later says Constellation are “look[ing] for old earth artifacts,” this may be a museum combat arena like they love and have done in fallout 3 with the air and space museum or fallout 4 with the museum of freedom.
  2. This is an old dilapidated museum on another planet, maybe Mars or Jemison. Same concept as on earth, but these artifacts were moved off world before something happened to earth.
  3. This is a collection owned by Constellation, perhaps you find these relics and can send them back to their hq and then they are displayed (I’d love this idea)
  1. Why is it in such disrepair then?
  1. This is a collection owned by that collector guy or the people in the room with the statues
  1. Why is it in such disrepair then?
  1. Catch all for anything else ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Whatever it is, as a space geek I love all of it so let's get into it with the vehicles we see.

First we have the lunar module for the Apollo program, the first (and only :( human carrying spacecraft to land on the moon).

Mercury Spacecraft > National Museum of the United States Air Force™ > Display

The mercury capsule which carried Alan Shepard, the first American into space

I believe a gemini capsule in the background. The gemini capsule was essentially a larger 2 person mercury capsule, but the mercury capsule had a retro rocket back on it's bottom to deorbit it, which we see on the capsule on it's side.

An Apollo command module, possibly the Apollo 11 one shown next to it that is housed in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum.

This one is the only one I can't immediately recognize. It's very very long. My best guess for what it could be would be a fully realized version of the soviet moon mission’s spacecraft.

If so, there would have been a point of divergence where the soviets continued with the space race, but this very much could be something else, I just don't know any spacecraft that long. If so, I hope we get some good sovietwave on our ships radio (also by the way please have a radio for the ship at least.)

Finally for spacecraft, we have what appears to be a model of the ISS, given the twin sets of three rows of radiators, solar panels, and general, but simplified, body. You can see the service module (Zvezda) here, although some things have been squashed and changed:

Note that one side of the solar panels have broken off and fallen to the floor, leading me to believe that this is not a carefully curated area by a faction.

Also if you look in the foreground, the camera is situated on the lunar rover, you can see the wheels, antenna, and golden camera.

Looking at the display case, we see a mercury (or maybe gemini suit, they are quite similar) as well as a seat presumably from a capsule.

Now looking at the signs:

A picture of the international space station with a shuttle and a nasa worm logo. Note that the nasa worm logo isn't the same as the real life one, maybe for the same reason why you can't have red crosses in games.

A poster of a Saturn V

Some spacecraft near Jupiter, you can see the great red spot. Notably, there are crosses or 4 pointed stars, one on a moon and one on the gas giant.

A history of space flight poster, possibly what this exhibit is.

A poster of a rocket taking off, the text is too hard to read, maybe it says “Leaving…”?

Then there are two posters too obscured to make out, one by the lunar rover’s dish and one behind the space station. There also may be some posters on the walls but those are really hard to make out.

A massive horned and armored creature with a beak, same as we saw in akila on a poster. These guys look so cool, and will definitely be hard to take down in a fight. We also get the first look at a tropical environment, which looks pretty good, with a good amount of vegetation, albeit not as detailed as the jungle concepts we had, but that may be another biome.

A rocky desert biome with alien ruins. Again seeing the floating nature that these artifacts seem to exhibit a lot. Also again getting very much rem tech vibes from this structure, with the jagged tower.

A close in of the previous shot. On the wall we have circles with an arc inside them like phases of a planet and horizontal lines. It reminds me of the shield designs we saw earlier, but those are more detailed. Also note the clean white composite looking material inside the floating ring between the two outside layers with lights. It looks very clean and new compared to other artifacts and these walls.

Finally our character approaching a completed artifact. This shot is one that makes me think it's a gateway. The object reminds me of both a biblically accurate angel and the drawing we saw in the 2021 trailer with the 1 2 and 3 rings. Also note that the rings on the floor are moving in the shot right before this

And thats the end of the story trailer, now to do some dialogue before capping it off.

  • The path ahead may be dangerous, but we are not stopping.
  • Resolve, not much more to say
  • Most dusties don't even make it this far.
  • Two things to note here. One is the general sentence. It implies that you (a dusty) are relatively new to this (Argos Extractors), and have gotten past a part that most others don't.
  • Second is the term dusties to refer to the player. Maybe calls the miners in general dusties as mining causes dust? In the expanse, Duster was a term that referred to martian’s, could the same be here?
  • Because whatever lies at the end of this road will change humanity forever.
  • Importance of the quest, like the line “We've come to the beginning of humanity's final journey” in the 2021 teaser.

And with that, that's the story trailer all wrapped up. Overall I thought it was very good, diverse biomes, 3 distinct feeling cities, with the one we saw all of, Akila, being a good bit larger than other cities we have seen from Bethesda, and much more detailed on top of it. The story itself of discovering and collecting artifacts from the galaxy seems good to me, it's essentially a method to get players to see the interesting locations and get lost there. The only thing I would mention now is that we do see some framerate dips at times. I know Todd said in a past interview he prefers graphics over framerate for his games, as they aren't super competitive, but the demo does occasionally dip below a floor to be comfortably playable (though star citizen is worse and I play that..). But with no release date in sight I'm not concerned about it not being addressed.

Intermission 2

We get a brief word form Todd, saying “It's the story you create, by who you are and the choices you make. And that starts with character creation.” Looking at the top of the character creator gives us the last thing to try to piece to prologue together.

Prologue Speculation

At the top it says argos extractors, and at the bottom gives us an employee number. So without further ado, let me lay out how it feels like the prologue will go.

(Note that I was too slow to get this document out and u/Exo_soldier did a great write up on this too, coming to the same conclusion here, check it out! https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/vb2d4j/based_on_the_gameplay_this_is_likely_how_the_game/)

So we started working as a new miner with Argos Extractors, all but confirmed based on this character creation.

Other miners in a cave that we likely start in.

Some special NPC’s we start with. They say “Most dusties don't even make it this far” implying that we (the new dusty) have gone further than most others.

During this mining expedition, we find this artifact, see it's vision, and Constellation, a group dedicated to artifacts, is contacted for help.

Constellation member Barret arrives at our station and asks about our experience with the artifact. Note that one of the step out experiences likely happens here, possibly when the ship is landing, as in a later interview Todd says one of the special step out moments is “When you finally get to see the surface of a planet.” I originally thought this was referring to us being on a space station for a while, but now think this means we are underground for a while before coming to the top side. However during this interaction we are attacked by the crimson fleet, possibly after the artifact or possibly just being pirates.

Us, the other miners, and Barret, rush to fight off the pirates. Barret isn't seen later, so he may die and give us his ship, chronomark watch, and possibly vasco, but that would be a little strange given he is on the poster.

We eventually, with or without Barret, go in his ship to New Atlantis to meet with Constellation about the artifact and attack. We could also go directly to kreet as u/Exo_soldier speculated, but to me that mission felt like the first quest given by Constellation HQ. After that attack you would likely want to go meet the people who know all about the artifacts to get a better explanation before taking their ship to an abandoned research facility that unknowingly has pirates. The prologue may end right after the attack and you get the ship, and can go anywhere from there, in classic Bethesda fashion postponing the world changing quest indefinitely. The first words being “Welcome to Constellation, we have a lot to talk about” would be referring to this whole artifact and attack business, and possibly Barrett's death.

Having being a miner as a background is an easy way to gain proficiency in this mining laser device, and tutorialize scanning and looking for resources.

A last minute edit, the steam page straight up says “From humble beginnings as a space miner, you will join Constellation,” so yeah this is all confirmed lol.

Customization Trailer

We then get into character creation, starting with preset heads like in their previous games, this time called “Personal records”

Two other things to note. One is that the slider bars here are gel electrophoresis bands for that extra genetic flavor as first noted here, and the other is that while our outer suit is branded Argos Extractors, the undersuit is a nautilus brand. Likely doesn't mean anything other than nautilus manufactures habsuits for spacesuits.

We then get the same body triangle as fallout 4/76, except it is on a circle instead of a triangle now. We also have body types and walk styles instead of genders, and Todd mentioned in a reddit q&a that you could pick your own pronoun between he, she, and they, although we don't see that on this screen interestingly. Also note in the bottom of the screen that we can toggle the “habsuit” which appears to be the general term for a suit worn under your spacesuit and in a “hab.”

Then we get face customization, really similar from Fallout 4 except higher quality and all the options being on one slider on the right, not having to click on a part of the face to see the options there. Along with that, we don't see any option for directly sculpting the face like in Fallout 4, although the customize (A) prompt may be that under a different name.

Starting Class

We Then get to pick a starting class, which gives us 3 skills and has some dialogue consequences of unknown significance, with no mention of if skills can affect dialogue. Note the suit we start with being the argos mining suit we have seen so many times now, and was leaked earlier.

Now a list of all the classes and starting skills if we know them.

  • Bouncer
  • Chef
  • “While the unrefined masses scarfed down Chunks by the shipload, you catered to those with a more… discerning palate. In your kitchen, countless alien species became true culinary masterpieces”

Traits

We then get into optional traits that you can take up to three of, each with positives and negatives, very similar to new vegas and the original fallouts.

  • Alien DNA
  • ????
  • Excuse me what
  • Character has alien dna in them possibly giving additional abilities?
  • Empath
  • Extrovert
  • Opposite of Introvert, increased stats when with a companion
  • Freestar Collective Settler
  • Likely Freestar Collective version of neon street rat
  • Introvert
  • You really need your alone time. You have more endurance when adventuring alone, but less when adventuring with other human companions. (Can’t be combined with Extrovert)
  • Note that they say endurance, is this just hp or does this include more like the stamina like system?
  • Also note they specify human companion, meaning vasco (and hopefully some robot dog companion please Bethesda give me this) don't count, like fallout 4’s lone wanderer allowing you to still have dogmeat.
  • Kid Stuff
  • Your parents are alive and well, and you can visit them at their home. But 10% of all the money you earn is deducted automatically and sent to them.
  • Hopefully they are interesting enough characters to be worth 10% of our income. Also hope that as you get obscenely rich, as you always do in these games, they recognize that and maybe get more items in their home / upgrade it.
  • Neon Street Rat
  • You grew up on the mean streets of Neon. You gain access to special dialogue options, and better rewards from some missions on Neon. Crime bounty by other factions is greatly increased. (Can’t be combined with any other faction allegiance trait.)
  • Other faction allegiance traits likely Freestar Collective Settler and United Colonies Native
  • Hopefully this trait’s dialogue options are good and not just one line that doesn't change quests.
  • Raised Enlightened
  • You grew up as a member of the Enlightened. You gain a significant discount at the organization store, but lose access to [the] Sanctum Universum store. (Can’t be combined with any other Religion trait)
  • First of 3 religious traits, really like that they are having different religions in the game, loved that in morrowind.
  • What enlightened actually is cant be gleaned from this description unfortunately
  • Raised Universal
  • You grew up as a member of the Sanctum Universum. You gain a significant discount at the church store, but lose access to the Enlightened store. (Can’t be combined with any other Religion trait)
  • Second of 3 religious traits, note that the universal trait replaces organization store with church store, perhaps is more traditionally religious than the enlightened?
  • Serpent’s Embrace
  • You grew up worshiping the Great Serpent. Grav jumping provides a temporary boost to health and endurance, but health and endurance are lowered if you don't continue jumping regularly - like an addiction. (Can’t be combined with any other religion trait)
  • Third religious trait, very much the most cult like, what with the name being the “Great serpent”
  • Possibly the religion of house Va’ruun?
  • I first thought it meant jumping with your jetpack, but by specifying “Grav jumping,” and our ships using Grav warp drives, I think it means traveling planet to planet or system to system. Possibly this religion is nomadic and has to keep moving around, possibly addicted to some mechanic of warping, kinda like how the guild navigators in dune are addicted to spice?
  • Spaced
  • Your body has become acclimated to space. Health and endurance are increased when in space, but decreased when on the surface. (Can’t be combined with Terra Firma)
  • Starfield’s version of belters in the expanse, although it doesn't go as far as in that setting.
  • Solidifies boarding ships and combat in space stations, as otherwise why would your character need health and endurance when fighting ship to ship?
  • Also note that they say “Health and endurance” while introvert just specified endurance. Different systems or early description text?
  • Starter Home
  • You own a small house on a peaceful little moon, but it comes with a 50,000 credit mortgage with GalBank.
  • I'm definitely taking this one, love this idea
  • I wonder if the location will be randomized or same every playthrough, it's nondescript enough to be random.
  • Mortgage for this home, but unclear if you can take them out for other purchases.
  • Taskmaster
  • Terra Firma
  • Opposite of spaced, increased stats on a planet, decreased in space
  • United Colonies Native.
  • Likely UC version of Neon street rat
  • Unwanted Hero

The traits and classes are just begging for mods to expand them, and I cant wait to download a whole bunch of them and then go cyber runner every time lol.

Outfits

Then some looks at outfits:

A high visibility work suit.

Space Preston Garvey! In actuality it is likely a Freestar collective suit, with FMN on the side, best guess “Freestar Merchant Navy?”

United Colonies security armor, same as we saw earlier here:

Gaudy civilian clothes, likely for upper class citizens, similar to what we see on neon.

Space waiter type outfit, again reminds me of neon with the gold shoulder.

A spacer duster type outfit, feels either freestar collective or unaffiliated spacer. Could also be crimson fleet what with the crimson.

Another work uniform, looks vaguely dock worker like, maybe for workers on neon by the sea?

A low tech space suit, the angled helmet makes me think of mining. The suit looks like a mercury era suit with brown fabric thrown over it. We see this same suit later on mars.

Skills

We then get into the skills, which are stylized in the form of patches, which level up and change design. There are 5 categories, and we see part of physical and science, all of social and combat, and none of tech. Something to note is the 4 colored bands in the background. On physical, and social, the last group of perks are greyed out, on combat none are, and on science the last two are greyed out. It seems that there is some minimum number of perks / levels of perks in the previous tiers you need to unlock the lower perks

  • Physical
  • Elongated hexagon outline
  • Increasing strength, possibly unarmed, one perk looks like psychics?
  • Social
  • Hexagon outline
  • Talking with people, bartering, general charisma perks
  • Combat
  • Shield outline
  • Shooting with guns and melee weapons
  • Science
  • Oval outline
  • Research and exploration?
  • Tech
  • Neuro amps and robots?

Starting with physical, left to right top to bottom:

  • Weight Lifting
  • Increase total carrying capacity by 10 kilograms
  • Wellness
  • Immediately Gain 30 points of health.
  • A food pyramid type drawing with a balance between fruit and milk
  • A person with hands over their head and a pulse coming from their head
  • This definitely feels like psionics or something religious
  • A person meditating with smoke coming off them
  • Also religious or psionic?
  • A cobra and a fist
  • Possibly unarmed skill?
  • Something that looks like a flower or a flame

Now onto the social perks:

  • Bargaining
  • Buy items for 5% less and sell for 10% more.
  • Diplomacy
  • You can force a target NPC at or below your level to stop fighting for a while
  • Something food related, looks to be an upgraded gastronomy?
  • Original level Gastronomy:
  • Upgraded Persuasion it looks like
  • Gain an increased chance of success on speech challenges
  • A treasure chest,
  • probably something like the cap collector perk in fallout.
  • A person holding a credit chit with a ship in the background
  • possibly a cheaper fast travel?
  • A gorilla
  • possibly intimidate?
  • A person giving credits
  • Possibly increase rewards for quests or another bargaining perk?
  • A person pinching a diamond
  • Almost certainly pickpocketing
  • A person burning bonds between two other people
  • Interesting social changes between characters?
  • A person standing in like a power stance
  •  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • Two people, one with a flag
  • Leadership perk or settlement building one?
  • An outpost
  • Definitely settlement building one
  • A person on strings
  • Possibly something like command npc, but that is already seen in diplomacy
  • A ship yoke
  • Spaceship proficiency skill
  • A weird thing in someone’s mind.
  • Hacking people, transhumanist, possibly related to the binary robot sign, but it looks more organic than mechanical?

Now on to combat, and here we have a lot more details as the demo highlights a good number of the skills here:

  • Ballistics
  • “Centuries of conflict have proven that when it comes to threat elimination, few things stack up to the reliable power of combustion.”
  • Ranks
  • Ballistic weapons 10% more damage
  • Ballistic weapons 20% more damage
  • Ballistic weapons 30% more damage
  • Ballistic weapons range is increased by 30%

  • Note we have general ballistic perk, but also specialized pistol, shotgun, etc
  • Dueling
  • Melee Weapons do 10% more damage
  • Lasers
  • Laser Weapons do 10% more damage.
  • Pistol Certification
  • Pistols do 10% more damage
  • A break action shotgun
  • Clearly is a shotgun perk.
  • Demolitions
  • Ranks
  • Explosives do 10(15)% more damage?
  • Explosives do 20(30)% more damage ?
  • Explosives do 30% more damage and have a 30% larger radius

  • Probably a generic accuracy perk, but i'm still hoping for space bows
  • Particle Beams
  • Beam weapons distinct from lasers
  • Rapid Reloading
  • Sniper Certification
  • “Only a trained sniper truly understands all the elements necessary to patiently and effectively neutralize a target at excessive range”
  • Ranks
  • Scoped weapons are steadier and have less sway
  • ?
  • ?

  • Greatly increase accuracy and range when shooting without aiming
  • ?
  • Challenge: Kill enemies without aiming
  • A bulletproof vest
  • Likely increase damage resistance
  • It has alot of stuff strapped to it so maybe carry weight?
  • A knee with the skeleton shown
  • Possibly better athletics or crippling?
  • A targeting reticle
  • Increased accuracy? vats?

And the final category we see any of is science:

  • An atom with a planet in the center
  •  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ general science relating to exploring planets?
  • A crystal with a tech looking wire diagram
  • Possibly related to scanning or mining?
  • A flower and a moon
  • Possibly related to scanning plants.
  • A person on a planet with a flag
  • Possibly related to outposts
  • A file
  • Research?
  • What looks like a hand held scanner / thermometer
  •  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • A flask and pills
  • Possibly related to chems or manufacturing?
  • A cross hair but science
  • Possibly related to locating things? Kind of looks like a piece of ship tech?
  • A planet with a flag and towers
  • Possibly related to outposts / big outposts / many outposts on one planet

Research and Crafting

We then get into research and crafting. Research lets you unlock new things including groups of mods while crafting functions seemingly similar to fallout 4, allowing you to craft mods for existing weapons.

Starting with research, there are 5 categories and listed beneath them are all the researches we know of.

  • Pharmacology
  • Available projects: 12
  • Medical Treatment 1
  • Performance enhancement 2 (and by consequence, Performance enhancement 1 must exist)
  • Food and Drink
  • Available projects: 16
  • Outpost development
  • Available projects: 15
  • Resource extraction 1
  • Equipment
  • Available projects: 6
  • Helmet Mods 1
  • Weaponry
  • Available projects: 19
  • Barrel Mods 1
  • Requires:
  • 20 Iron
  • 20 Nickel
  • 10 sealant
  • Shows a picture of the grendel here
  • Barrel Mods 2
  • Grip mods 1
  • Grip mods 2
  • Grip mods 3
  • Optics and sight mods 1
  • Optics and sight mods 2
  • Optics and sight mods 3
  • Muzzle mods 1
  • Muzzle mods 2

There is a research tree shown on the right (Barrel Mods 2 requires Barrel Mods 1), as well as filters for the category you are in. Based on the progress 0% and the “Projects in progress” it looks like these take time to complete, probably sped up by creating research outposts or research labs on your ship. Whether this takes in game time, real life time, or some form of research experience system that takes time, but is sped up by research outposts / ships is unknown. I would like to say it would be interesting to make them take time, but I know it will be instantly modded out like the war table timers were in Dragon Age Inquisition.

For crafting weapon mods, the one mod we explicitly see is an extended magazine for the Semi-Auto Eon gun we saw at the start of the combat gameplay. We then get some quick shots of combat on different worlds so let's go through them.

The player fighting a diseased siren with an EON on Alpha Andraste II. When he moves to the other creature it is just called a siren, so it appears that diseased creatures from 76 will be making a comeback. Note that the pistol has an ammo counter on it, but it is off from the ammo count in the bottom right by a few frames, and at the start of the clip it is completely off, seemingly showing 21 then 20 then 28, but i'm chalking it up to the stream quality or a minor bug. The sirens themselves are quadrupeds, with 4 ear like features and longish neck. Trying to analyze these shots is painful due to the quality of this video.

The planet is in a shrublike biome, with dry plants and sparse grass around. Based on the name, Alpha Andraste II, It seems like this is an undeveloped world. This seems to be a general naming system for planets in the system, with the star being Alpha Andraste, and Alpha Andraste I being the closest planet to the star, Alpha Andraste II being the second closest etc. Moons of a planet may also end up being designated Alpha Andraste IIa, Alpha Andraste IIb, etc.

Then we have the player with an equinox fighting Metropus floaters, one diseased one not, on Lantana III. Note that the equinox now has a reflex sight in this shot. The floaters very much remind me of the ones in 76, being, well, blobs that float. The environment consists of crimson leaves and ferns in a foggy sky, with a mountain in the background.

Final shot in this sequence is our character with the AR-99 fighting an angler hexapod on Moloch I. Based on the lighting, this could be the planet we see the earlier orange base on that we thought may have been mars, but based on the cydonia text, i'm still leaning towards mars.

Base Building

We then get Starfield's version of the settlement system introduced in Fallout 4.

We established this outpost on Vectera, a named moon. According to the guide, it's 100% surveyed, both intotal and this current biome, with 9 resources but no flora and fauna. We may need to 100% survey a planet before we can create an outpost. The moon is only slightly smaller than earth at .91g, but has no oxygen and is -199C. In the scanning UI, we have a button to place an outpost, and we have 30 uses for that. This can be:

  1. We have 30 “outpost kits” and have to purchase more to make more outposts.
  2. We can place 30 outposts on one astronomical body, possibly increased by research.
  3. We can place 30 outposts in total, possibly increased by research.

The outpost is established as Vectera Outpost 1, essentially confirming multiple outposts per planet / moon. We see that Vectera is in the Narion system, a system that according to the document we saw in the “into the starfield” video has recently had the crimson fleet expand into it, and we have the same build limit as in fallout 4. Instead of the needs in Fallout 4, we only see 4 items, cargo, crew, power, and production, notably in production per minute. That last one is what makes me think research and other things are going to be tied into some time wait mechanic. Crew is how many settlers you have, and power is also self explanatory, but cargo isnt. Is it how much you can store in the settlement? If so, why is it capped unlike containers in previous games? Perhaps has something to do with collecting samples or resources and you have to ship them off world to continue extraction? Without the food, water, and defense needs visable, will we not have to care about them?

We then see a top down view of the outpost, now renamed to Collins’ outpost, likely for Michael Collins, the too often forgotten third astronaut on Apollo 11 who stayed in orbit. I never thought about a top down view for fallout 4s settlement building, but after seeing this it seems like such an obvious idea. It looks like in addition to the more freeform design of Fallout 4, we also have these hab parts in a “structures” tab, that will snap onto each other, including radially off of circle parts. A Lot of them are reminiscent of the 2018 build leaks. All the structures we see are:

  • Outpost airlock
  • 2 designs
  • Design 1:
  • Four Wall Hab
  • 2 designs
  • Design 1:
  • Hydroponic hab A
  • 2 Designs
  • Second design many be Hydroponic hab B
  • Design 1:

We then see a radar that we saw in a concept image, which may serve the same function as the beacon to draw in new settlers in fallout 4.

A view of a few sci-fi windmills the character has built on the edge of the outpost. Based on the 24 total power, they each provide 8. Also based on the global power count we may not need wires, but fallout 4 also had global power count as well so who knows

Then an overview shot of the outpost. In the foreground we see an outpost like we made, but one of the circular domes is not glass, possibly a science hab variant?

A well resource extractor

Cargo containers in standard sizes. Boxes taking up the whole space and cylinders and spheres in frames to match the box size. Reminds me of Star Citizen’s Standard Cargo Unit boxes or the real life standard cargo containers. Likely that cargo stat we saw earlier. It looks like there are gray foundations that these boxes are on, do we build the storage space and resources are piled up there as they are extracted?

Lower tier windmills

First instinct was solar panels but they dont really look like them, but maybe they are.

A blooming onion looking structure, maybe a fusion reactor as it reminds me of fallout 76’s, but why in the open if that's the case?

A UC affiliated character we recruited working at a tailoring workbench

Our character behind the previous shot inside a hydroponics circular hab. We also have a little one wheeled box robot running around, as well as chairs and a table, likely placed by the player and were not a default part of the hab.

Spaceship building

Now this shot feels like a mashup. It seems to be in part of the prologue, right after this shot happens. You can see the same solar panels in the back if you go slowly. Note though that we see no one in the pilots seat.

It then cuts as the ramp lowers and we enter the ship from the 2021 teaser, the frontier.

Everything looks very much the same, with the navigation table still having the coffee cup and digital text pad, and the dining table still having that tube thing and square potato. The one notable difference is that the wall that once had all the decorations is now bare, since this is early in the story and having details about the mystery now wouldnt make sense.

Also note that we see a seat on the right past the door, where as we saw one on the left in the 2021 trailer. These are our two crew spots for the ship, as we will see later.

The player looking out the cockpit, very much like the 2021 teaser.

A science / research part of a ship, with 7 total crew members in there. That is a lot more than I would have expected for researchers on a ship. This begs the question, why have researchers on a ship? Is there something better having a science crew can do over scientists at an outpost, or will they just be mobile? If so, why is being mobile an advantage?

A more general crew compartment working on the ship. We see up to 5 crew in here at once. The screens are likely just for flavor, as the one close to the camera looks very much like a screen we saw in the crimson fleet command center.

The amount of crewmembers we see is quite high. I have to doubt that these are fully fleshed out companions, are they npcs with minor back stories like the unique settlers in Fallout 4, completely generic crew members, or a mix of all three? Have they updated their randomly generated settler / npc system to be more like a watch dogs generating backgrounds?

We then get our first look at the ship builder and boy does it look great. Let's go through each part of this ui.

Here we see our reactor power, the total power needed to power all of our equipment, and the different systems and how much power that they each use. Note that the equip power does not include the GRV bars. As we see in the spaceflight segment, the grav system is entirely unpowered, it seems that to jump we are expected to divert power from elsewhere, and therefore isn't included in the equip power as it would be a waste to always keep it on. In combat, you will presumably have to power down other systems and survive while the drive spools up to flee.

Simplified Constellation logo, the ship's name, and a blank section that says a city / planet later.

Cost for modification, these are large numbers, ship modification will be a large money sink, something Bethesda games always need.

This seems to be used in the height of the ship, as it lowers when we put on the engines one on top of another.

Stats about the ship.

  • Weapon one is lasers with a (damage? dps?) of 117
  • Weapon two is ballistic with a (damage? dps?) of 76
  • Weapon three is missiles with a (damage? dps?) of 26
  • The total hull health of the ship is 317
  • The total shield health of the ship is 220
  • The total cargo capacity is 460
  • Ties into outpost cargo, players carry weight, or both?
  • Crew of 2
  • We see their two stations behind the pilots seat
  • Jump range of 16 lightyears
  • The settled systems is ~50ly out from earth, ~100ly wide, possibly in a full sphere around earth as space is 3d
  • Mobility is 70 (no units sad)
  • Top speed is 150 (see above)
  • And mass is 361 (see above again)

Also note that there is a warning that we are given about this ship. We also see errors sometimes, seemingly when a part is being moved.

The cockpit we have for this ship, being Nova Galactic’s Magellan C2 Cockpit, provides 60 cargo space, 9 hull health, and two crew slots. It also has a mass of 10 and requires  a perk, starship design, to make. Notably it doesn't mention a rank of the perk, which will require you to know all the variations of the patch to know what rank you need. Given that the crew slots are given to the work stations, do we have to build habitation areas for them to live in? It would make sense that we would, i'm just not seeing any mechanical benefit.

We then add 2 reladyne white dwarf 1000 engines, the first one seemingly picked up from the ship as placing it doesnt change the stats, while the second engine does increase stats. These engines are class A (assuming that means they are good, similar to engine classes in star citizen), have a thrust of 1550 and a maneuvering thrust of 815. They have an engine health of 48, which we see later subsystems being shot off, so if this engine itself is hit for 48 damage, it will be lost. It also contributes 100 health to the overall hull and 100 mass, which is a surprising amount for just the engine. Also here is where we see the thing on the right go from 1 to 0.

Also note here that it now says new atlantis in the bottom

Then we add a nautilus titan 350 helium 3 tank to the ship which adds 76 grav jump fuel and 30 points of health. Due to the weird cuts we cant see exactly how much this increases jump range. Also remember that nautilus is the name on our starting hab suit. They also have a mass of 12.

Nova galactic Ng-15 landing gear, only gives the ship 4 health and 4 mass.

A nova galactic 1x1x1 hab, seems to be the hab we see earlier with the dining table and navigation table. The 1x1x1 implies we will have habs of different sizes in all dimensions. I'd love to have a 2 or 3 story central open room in a large ship. Also note that this only provides 5 health, it feels slightly weird that engines provide so much in comparison.

We then have a nova cowling with 8 health and 8 mass, mainly to smooth out sections of the ship.

Then a look at a horizon defense Mauler 104L laser cannon, only one health and one mass, but is class a and requires 4 power, meaning that this is weapon 1 for this ship. It also requires the starship design skill.

We then have a horizon defense Dragon 221P MW pulse laser, class A and 3 power required. Note that we have 2 of them, one on either side. I'm assuming both of these are in weapon 0, for a total power requirement of 6, as we also have a missile rack above for weapon 2.

Taking an overall look at this ship design, we can see the cockpit, a 1x1x1 hab, a 2x1x1 hab behind that, and then a 1x1x1 hab with a docking collar stacked ontop at the rear. We also see a cargo bay underslung the ship. There are 4 landers, helium 3 tanks on the far side, and maybe a cargo module on the close side. We then have what is assumidly the power generator on the back with 4 engines on it.

Before we move on i'll get started on the list of all components we have seen so far, but do note thatIthink these costs are going to change as some parts have the same cost as far inferior versions:

We then switch to another ship called the Longsword I, with the location name being vectera, where we established the outpost earlier. We see a full color customization system, with hue, saturation and brightness customization (what star citizen promised but postponed in favor of selling preset colors, still ticked about that one). This ship notably has 10 total crew members, which is a lot more than I was expecting.

We see a few new parts:

  • DS10.1 Phobos Cockpit
  • Deimos
  • Cargo 50
  • Health 6
  • Crew Slots 6
  • Mass 5
  • Cost 13000
  • Deimos Control Station 2x1x1
  • Deimos
  • Health 5
  • Crew Slots 4
  • Mass 14
  • Cost 5000
  • Note the description for this part, all the others have been generic but this one says “Deimos Habitat Modules come in a variety of different interior configurations. Cycle through the variants to choose the best one to suit your needs!”
  • I love love love ship interiors so I can't wait to look through all of these
  • The question is, from this outside view, how do you know what it actually looks like inside??
  • Also can you customize the interiors with a outpost builder type system, or is it all pre packaged?
  • Deimos Cowling Fore
  • Health 3
  • Masss 3
  • Cost 1500

Taking a look at the whole ship, we see it's got seemingly 4(5?) segment long body on top of a long cockpit, then two 3(4?) segment long side extensions, with the front of them being air intakes. The cockpit itself can fit 6 crew members, and its size becomes apparent when looking through the glass. It has two lasers on the sides and a docking ring on top. On the two side extensions, it has what looks to be an attachment rail which we see on another ship later. It also has a flat radar dish like thing on the outside of the yellow body.

We then see a boxy ship called the Privateer. The only new part we see here is the cockpit:

  • Viking CP-110
  • Cargo 55
  • Health 7
  • Crew Slots 4
  • Mass 5
  • Cost 18000

Again like the last ship is 3 wide and maybe up to 5 long? It also appears to be at least 3 floors tall. Note that now instead of having an A next to the reactor, we have a B. Can we have multiple reactors in a ship?

The next ship is the Mako, which is an unarmed, science looking ship. The new part we see hear is a hab

  • Taiyo Hab 1x1x1 Top B
  • Taiyo Astroengineering
  • Health 5
  • Mass 14
  • Cost 5000

The cockpit here is very open, and we can see the pilot’s seat and two seats behind him facing forwards. It has no weapons, but has the same mechanism that the crimson fleet ships have, which I think is a frontal docking ring. It looks like a 3x3x3, but the top layer only has things in the center and back, and the corners are rounded and are not full habs. It's stout nature makes me think of a crab every time I see it.

The last ship we see is called the Ranger. Only new part we get here is a Nova Cowl, which has only the generic cowl name, like the top cowl

  • Nova Cowl
  • Nova Galactic
  • Health 3
  • Mass 3
  • Cost 1500

This ship has a nova galactic cockpit different from the other one we saw, a new missile rack on top, a front facing window under the cockpit that may have a graphical glitch, top mounted docking port, solar panels, and a loop that reminds me of the ones we saw in the concept art.

There is so much to look at and try to deduce parts on ships, but I have to get this finished before the game comes out so lets move on😅

Intermission 3

“It's not just how the ship looks, it's how it performs. From engines to shields to weapon systems… because yes, you can fly it.”

Todd I know you look at this sub based on the smug way you delivered that line haha. Despite all the people saying that they couldn't get it to work in the creation engine, they did it. Not flying in the same world space as the on ground environment, but flying nevertheless.

SHIP COMBAT

We get a canned takeoff animation and then just fade into space. A little anticlimactic fade in, hope for something a little less plain but idk what i'm even hoping for to be honest. Unfortunately we aren't full on space sim like Star Citizen where the displays are physicalized and we can interact with them, but again, this isn't a full on space sim, it's a BGS RPG. They do change dynamically in flight so that is nice to see.

There are 3 parts to the flight UI

Power systems, as Todd says in an interview later, FTL was an inspiration. You have total reactor power bars and have to delegate that power to different systems. Here the lasers and engines aren't at full power and will be hampered in their performance in some way. The grav section of power is for your grav ftl drive, and it takes a significant amount of power to spool. Fine when out of combat, but in combat you will have to sacrifice power from weapons or other needed systems to spool, unless you give your ship a lot of reactors. It looks like managing the power will be used via the D pad on consoles. Note that LAS is highlighted now, my guess is that pressing left and right D pad switches what system is selected, while up and down increases or decreases power to that system.

Second is the central circle, the size of which seems to be where you can lock onto enemies, more on that in a bit. Along the outside from left to right we have speed, ballistic power, missile power, laser power, and a boost. These recharge at separate rates, with ballistic being fast to charge but it depletes all the way down to zero when fired, lasers slowly charge but take off ~3 percent of their charge (at least for these lasers), and missiles charge very slowly and in 20% increments here, each corresponding to one missile (5 in total for this missile rack). Whether these are always the same, general ideas for the categories, or completely different depending on specific weapons is unknown. Boost slowly charges and has a minimum amount of boost required to activate it. Speed appears to have a speed limiter bar but we don't have enough gameplay to determine how exactly movement works. The center two circles are where you are pointing, and the two bars on the right are where the nose is pointing, very familiar if you've played star citizen or other space flying games.

Finally an outline of the ship, the shields around it, and the total hull health. We never see the shields go down fully, and the cockpit of a different ship, so we don't know much about how(if) this diagram changes.

We then get a bit of flight before pirates warp in. We see a ringed planet that looks very much like Saturn, but could be Olivas, a yellow ringed gas giant which we see later. The planet below could be a moon of Olivas if they are going for realistic distances between other planets or Gagarin, another planet we see later, if they are not.

They warp in in a horizontal flash of light, similar to the horizontal colored flash we see when we go through a warp, like at the end of this demo or the 2018 teaser. Here we see that there are only 4 degrees of freedom for our thrusters, which is alright we just have to see how it feels. The two ships are Crimson fleet Ghosts, but the locked on target is not locked on to the two new ships. There is actually a cut here when you switch to the cockpit, go frame by frame and look at the planet below. When they cut, the locked on target, (which has a triangle on the circle pointing to it) is another crimson fleet Ghost, but with a treasure chest symbol and is behind us.

Possibly the reason we came here was to salvage it but were ambushed?

We then cut to third person and use the boost of our ship, and get a good look at the ringed planet.

Now we have targeted the hostile Ghost, and can see it’s level, shields, and hull. While targeting it, if it stays in the center circle, a target lock will build up, and when it reaches 100 we are prompted to hit X, presumably to fire a missile. We also see enemy missiles locked onto us, and a pointer on the left of the circle towards the other enemy ship. Also note that there is a docking prompt, showing that we can board ships, hopefully seamlessly with only a docking cutscene disguised as a load screen. Also Also note that the selected power system has changed.

We then destroy one of the ships, and see a large piece coming off as it dies. Later we see subsystem health and we saw engine and reactor health earlier so I think that you will be able to shoot parts off while the ship is still wholly intact, but we don't see it in this short demo.

Also note this tiny treasure chest icon we see in the background in the scene after we kill the first ship, probably marking that original Ghost.

Switching towards the other target, once the lock on starts, we see that our weapons gimbal towards him, not firing directly in front.

We then kill the second ship, lower our speed, I think using a limiter like how star citizen does it, and get a close shot of the Ghost’s tail. Also if you go frame by frame you can notice the Ghost being duplicated, then the original copy getting removed.

We then get a nice montage of ships in space.

A new design going through an asteroid and debris field next to a red gas giant.

The original Frontier design going through an asteroid field.

A cargo ship labeled 36 Flying. It seems to hold at least 16 standard rectangular cargo containers that we saw way back in the outpost segment, which may be the size of two square standard cargo containers.

Either a station on a monolithic ship approaching an ice world. With all the cylinders, it makes me think of a gas or water freighter, like the expanse’s canterbury in function, not exactly form, as this ship is pretty much the bare essentials.

The Ranger from the ship building segment approaching a station above a lunar looking moon. The station is mostly trusses, cargo, and equipment, but the right of the station appears to be habs or pressurized. It appears that there is at least one ship already docked here. Also with all they have done, hopefully we will be able to build our own stations like we can outposts and ships?

We then see the frontier flying underneath that same station, as you can clearly see the ring and dish to the top left of the ship.

A ship in a dogfight, you can just see the other ship by the near engine’s exhaust. On the sides of this ship, we see “SV 94 UCSEC (may be another character in there, too dark to see)” Indicating that this is a United Colonies Security Space Vehicle. It has a cargo bay on its belly, notably lit with lights, and the same cored metal part split in half as a lot of other ships right below its fuel tanks.

We then get a shot of the pilot, who is wearing our starting argos suit and the UC helmet marked 74 we saw many times before. (because of this 74 I thought the ship would say 74 too but it definitely says 94)

Fighting a higher level crimson fleet ship called a Haunt I. It looks like the Crimson fleet ship classes will be based on ghosts and spooky names.

Our frontier ship fighting a ship that looks like the same ship as the shot with the red gas giant (With the fire effect being off). This ship may be the Haunt.

Will our designed ships be added to the leveled lists or is that ship a “stock” design we can buy?(second option probably more likely).

The Longsword I fighting a ship that looks like a flattened privateer. Not much to note other than new paint color, but given that the possible paint colors are every color in the color wheel that's not important lol.

A ship flying, due to the lighting cant make out many details other than cargo bay, four round engines, and the common metal plating piece between the engines, possibly grav drive?

Ship to Ship docking! We can undock, get up and presumably walk around our ship before boarding, and directly board. Considering that we often see docking ports on the roof of ships, will it be a connected ladder and then gravity flips on the other ship, or will we get some zero g combat too?

What appears to be us flying a crimson fleet ghost destroying the cargo ship with the number 36 on it based on the engines.

New flat ship charging into a destroyed ship we can’t make out.

Reg gas giant ship / haunt flying through debris. Appears to be the planet we started this ship combat segment on the left.

Our ship firing a missile at and destroying a Haunt I. Like I speculated earlier, missiles charge up in discrete intervals (this missile rack having 5 missiles, each missile counts for 20%), and when fired deplete an interval (20%). Also note that we got a critical hit on the reactor of the ship, which may have made it blow up but it's health was low already as seen here.

By the ship's health bar we see a red/ orange Shield and Gravity symbol, likely indicating that those subsystems have been damaged.

The rest of the shots are nothing new, so let's move on. All in all I loved this segment and can't wait to see how it feels. Space combat on top of an RPG is something i've been waiting so long for.

Intermission 4

Nothing much to say here again (idk why I made intermission segments now that I think of it), but this segment coming up i've rewatched so so so many times, it's an incredible 90 seconds of reveals.

Exploration

We first get a look at Jemison, the capital world of the UC housing New Atlantis in Alpha Centauri as we know from the into the starfield video. It appears to be an ocean-like planet, albeit with large strips of land running across it. Todd says we can land in New Atlantis, but we can also land and explore anywhere on the planet. A great way to reveal it. A Lot of concerns are brought up about the scale of the game, but i'll address them later as it only gets bigger.

Looking at the planet view:

  • Jemison
  • Alpha Centauri System
  • Survey 15%
  • Type: Rock
  • Terrestrial or gas planet, maybe more
  • Gravity: 0.91G
  • Fairly close to Earth
  • Termature: Temperate
  • Atmosphere: O2
  • Magnetosphere: Unknown
  • Interesting inclusion, will the lack of a magnetosphere have any effects like solar storms?
  • Fauna: Abundant
  • Flora: Abundant
  • Water: Biological
  • Life in the water

We see New Atlantis on the planet, with a tower icon for it and a chevron indicating we are there. We then have a scan prompt and a landing prompt, with our destination set as New Atlantis.  Looking in the bottom left we have a set landing target, which I assume changes the destination prompt. We also have a “show me”, which may provide a preview of the landing site, show a map key, or do a tour of the system or show where you are? Will it let you try to land in the ocean? Could you land somewhere else and walk to New Atlantis (or atleast near it as it's on a mountain)? Is there a limited area generated when you land in a random spot or is the whole world preset, think the latter but not 100% sure? Can you walk a lap around the planet, even if it's completely unfeasable? Lots of questions that don't get answered, that we will probably find out in the coming months.

We then Zoom out to the whole system of alpha centauri, seeing 4 planets. The map shows the curvature of space time around bodies which I really like. Jemison with one moon, which looks really really far out. A red planet with two, a blue green planet named Gagarin with none, and a ringed yellow gas giant named Olivas with 5.

We see details of gagarin and a moon of Olivas named Chawla:

  • Gagarin
  • Likely named for Yuri Gagarin, first man in space
  • Alpha Centauri System
  • Survey 18%
  • Type: Rock
  • Gravity: 0.89G
  • Termature: Temperate
  • Atmosphere: O2
  • Magnetosphere: Unknown
  • Fauna: Moderate
  • Flora: Moderate
  • Water: Biological
  • Traits: Unknown
  • Interesting we only see traits for this body not the others.
  • Chawla
  • Moon of Olivas, Alpha Centauri System
  • Survey 36%
  • Type: Rock
  • Gravity: 0.43G
  • Termature: Frozen
  • Atmosphere: CO2
  • Magnetosphere: Unknown
  • Fauna: None
  • Flora: None
  • Water: Heavy Metal

Notably, despite this system being Alpha Centarui, we only see a single star, despite that star system in reality having 3 stars (although proxima centauri is small and distant). Hopefully we see the other stars in the system, as it would be a real shame to not have binaries and trinaries given how common they are in reality.

Looking at the system, we have a minimalist map of the system top left, and a faction control area in the top right.

Note that the system changes from when we first see it, to when we zoom out of gagarin. Before:

After:

This can't be accounted for by just rotating the camera, we see the location marks moved, and the moons shuffled. Will we have actual orbits of the planets in real time or do they move when we fast travel for example?

Over two planets and a moon we have this symbol, which may mean a settlement, maybe an artifact, which interestingly is not there when we zoom out of Gagarin, despite a higher survey number. Probably toggled off?

We then have a pretty obvious space station symbol.

A ship icon, possibly derelict ships, or missions where you meet with someone on a ship?

And an eye, maybe the main quest?

We then get the line “But not just this system, but over 100 systems, over 1000 planets, all open for you to explore” and a view of the galaxy map. That's a lot, and a fair few people have complained about that number saying that it's too much and therefore the planets are going to be boring. There are 3 points I'll bring up in response to that.

1.

I think the best thing in reply to this is a quote we get from Todd later; “There are alot of ice balls in space, so that was one of our big design considerations for this game. What's fun about an iceball? And it's ok sometimes if ice balls aren't, it is what it is.”  Not every planet is going to be interesting. Not every planet is going to be worth landing on. There is no way the game will expect you to 100% every planet. They are there to make the Starfield settled systems truly feel as expansive as space, something that to me always feels missing from other space RPGs. The traditional Bethesda hand crafting is still there. Star Citizen has this with its massive planets, and outside of the hand placed outposts and cities, you don't really go out into the wilds of the planet very often except for the novelty of it or a mission. But you could if you wanted to. Just having that choice to go and explore if you want to, even though lots of times you won't, makes the world feel so much more real than the slices we get in sci-fi rpgs like mass effect (which I still love).

2.

Just because a planet doesn't have much human settlement doesn't make it boring. Having followed this game for so long, the one theme that they keep pushing over and over is exploration. And in the real exploration of space, that's the kind of world we are exploring, with their “magnificent desolation” as Buzz Aldrin described the moon. As a space geek I love having the opportunity to explore space in a game, more detailed than other games on the market let you, with Star Citizen having no real exploration mechanics (yet, coming 20 years later given how salvage has been going :/), and No Man's Sky being heavily stylized.

3.

Another quote from Todd we see later is essentially saying, ‘we wanted to have a full planet, so we made the technology to do that, and when you have the tech, why not make more to fill in the universe?’ Ties into point 1, the traditional Bethesda game quests are still there, just on a much larger backdrop. And limiting themselves to 100 systems and not having an infinite amount of them is something that I am glad to see. Completely procedural is a lot harder, but choosing a certain number of them lets them still spend time with a lot of them, adding outposts and or locations. The distance between the points of interest have increased, but the points of interest themselves are going to be what we expect.

In summary, I'm glad to finally have a space rpg with this authentic sense of scale. For a game set in space, I much prefer this system then a series of linked flat maps like in the outer worlds

We then get a view of the systems, and information about the selected star:

  • Star (maybe we will find a black hole or red dwarf?)
  • Designation Alpha Centauri
  • Level 1
  • Leveled star systems, some being harder than others. This is somewhat relieving to me, as I prefer having hard areas in RPG’s. It always feels bland and unrewarding when npc’s are always at the same strength comparatively, and all the work you put into leveling up feels like you did nothing (looking at you eso).
  • Spectral Class G2
  • Same as Alpha Centauri A in the real world, and same as the sun, Alpha Centauri B is a K1 while proxima centauri is a red dwarf
  • Catalogue ID GL 559A
  • In universe catalogue of stars or objects
  • Temperature 5790K
  • Mass 1.10 SM
  • Solar masses
  • Radius 862420 (km)
  • Close to our estimate of Alpha Centauri A of ~847015 km
  • Magnitude 4.37
  • This is the brightness of the star, notably from Earth, which may be weird if earth is devastated, but old habits die hard.
  • Planets 4
  • Moons 8
  • Outposts 0
  • Player established outposts
  • Survey (total system) 15%

Looking at the map, we see the following systems named, with two having icons indicating settlements I presume

  • Sol
  • Narion
  • Settlement
  • Mentioned had a problem with crimson fleet pirates in the into the starfield video
  • Alpha Centauri
  • Settlement
  • Cheyenne
  • Mentioned had a problem with crimson fleet pirates in the into the starfield video
  • Jaffa
  • VOLII
  • Volii or Vol II, leaning towards volii now as we don't see a space.
  • Likely houses neon as neon has a VOLII hotell
  • Notably, it doesn't have a settlement icon, not discovered yet?
  • Porrima

The stars that are named are either the ones we have visited or heard about? Notably, Sol doesn't have the settlement symbol, maybe Cydonia isn't on mars or maybe we just haven't found it? The system in front of Jaffa may be a binary system, if so why isn't Alpha Centauri?

Biggest thing I noticed, despite the parallax, it seems two stars are closer to earth than Alpha Centauri.

Narion is also close but seems to be further away from the camera. Three possibilities

  1. I got the parallax effect wrong trying to watch this short clip over and over and they are further than Alpha Centauri. In that case the red one may be Barnard's star, and the blue one may be Sirius, two stars relatively close to earth often featured in sci-fi.
  2. In Starfield's world we discovered new stars that we don't know about very close to earth.
  3. Bethesda didn't care about the accuracy of star placement to that degree. Kinda doubt this one given the amount of detail in the information panel for alpha centauri, but then again Alpha Centauri doesn't appear to be a trinary system so maybe.

Finally, while on this map I'll randomly mention a theory some people have had about the crimson fleet being based in Sol in Cydonia on mars. Main point being the crimson relating to the red planet, and while I think that would be cool, post disaster sol faction trying to retake colonies, I dont think thats the case for one reason. Looking back at the Into the starfield doc we saw emil working on, it says “Pirates of the Crimson Fleet have extended far beyond the Kryx system and have established footholds in the Sagan, Cheyenne, Lunara and Narion systems,” seemingly establishing the crimson fleet’s base as being in the Kryx system. It also states that “This is clearly no longer just a Freestar Collective problem,” implying that the crimson fleet used to just be a threat to the Freestar Collective. If they were based in Sol, one system away from the UC capitol, why would they initially be fighting the Freestar Collective and not the UC?

We then get our final montage, and this one is my favorite, showing all kinds of landscapes and environments.

First a shot of Akila city. We see the front game we got a shot of, as well as where the market type area was based on the orientation of the central building. We also can see the roof of the hitching from this angle.

We also get another view of the secondary walled area, which has the same standard cargo containers as our player built outpost. That area also has a landing area for ships, one of which we see taking off now. Also note the background landscape, it will come in handy later.

We then get the second shot of the mining area on maybe mars. I showed earlier in the story trailer where that shot was from, on the left near a landing pad. We also see another ship landed not on the pad with people nearby.

Looking down into the pits we see a lot of cargo boxes, a loading zone, and terraced like steps. The biggest thing we see is the name CYDONIA on the side of a building.

If Cydonia is a city, could this be Cydonia? Ok so having seen everything about Cydonia, let me lay out everything we know about it and some theories.

What we know

  • Cydonia the name of a region on mars, and is named after a greek city state called Kydonia or Cydonia
  • In the 2021 trailer, words written on a mirror says “Reminder: Cydonia security does NOT have a sense of humor…
  • This location has cydonia written on it.

Speculations

  • Cydonia is a city on mars and this is it. Without a strong magnetosphere, early cities on mars would likely want to be built underground to protect from radiation. We know magnetospheres were thought about as we saw them when looking at planets.
  • If it is on mars, why do we not see anything about Sol in any of the starfield info we have gotten? Why are they not a faction we have seen despite being probably one of the first settled places and should be well established? Is cydonia an isolationist, militarist, authoritarian Martian civilization, as we often see in sci-fi Martians, and that's why their security’s harshness is mentioned?
  • Cydonia is an outpost / small settlement on Mars
  • This isn't a massive location, seeming smaller than akila, and looks much more like a mining outpost. The city could be underground though.
  • Cydonia is the name of a Martian faction, and this is one of their outposts.
  • In the expanse, one of the major factions in the later trilogy of books is named Laconia, also a Greek city state / region. Avoiding spoilers as much as possible, Laconia in the expanse is also related to Mars. If Cydonia is a faction, their name could be placed on this outpost and their capital could be elsewhere, as this area doesn't feel like a major city, though it could be if they are going for safety from radiation. Also the one quote we have about Cydonia security also makes sense if it's a faction, although it might make more sense if it was Cydonian instead of just Cydonia, but their equivalent in the UC is just United colonies security so maybe not.
  • Cydonia is the name of a city / faction not on mars.
  • Just because it shares the name with a region on mars doesn't mean it has to be there, the name comes from a place on Earth. The expanse’s laconia isn't on mars, so maybe cydonia isnt too. We see one shot later that is 100% on mars, and it looks much less orange, and another shot on Moloch I that looks much more like this outpost, so maybe Cydonia is on there (if so why does Moloch I have a generic name) or a similar planet? The color deviation may also be just a factor of the weather. I would bring up Sol not having a settlement icon above it, but VOLII does not and I'm pretty sure neon is there.
  • Anything else
  • ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ catchall

An refining outpost on a frozen moon. They have tanks of methane and traditional high visibility arctic orange colored buildings. Based on the sky color it looks like an o2 atmosphere?

Third shot of neon, again the same street, kinda wish we got to see more of the city. Based on the arch of the dome, this is likely the main street in the center. One of the shots we couldn't read earlier is called the emporium, and we also have a Gal(bank?) building. Seeing the shot coming out of this center area, maybe there are other areas down below this main level? It would be like the concepts of the fishing rig we saw with lights underneath the main platform. We also have a sign below the street, which would be a weird place for a sign if there was nothing below it. I hope they didn't pay much for that prime real estate lol.

It is a picture of a Chinese dragon with the text “our products, your life, one dream” which is very vague and somewhat concerning in a cyberpunky corporate way. The characters on the right could be stylized English or could be the unique neon language we saw in the concept art, too obscured to tell.

Windmills on a frozen planet, likely the same one as the shot before the last based on the terrain and sky. Could also be a player outpost on that planet. I love this shot, with the massive frozen plane and the music that plays here, it really feels like space and an untouched world.

Possibly another outpost or structure in the far left but I doubt it.

Another favorite shot (i'm going to say this about a lot of shots lol) of our character walking through rock formations in a desert. Our character has a double barrel, a more fabricy looking brown and black suit, and a brown and black fabric covered jetpack.

An open air crystal trough. If you told me this was from an elder scrolls elsweyr or hammerfell I would believe you. This looks like a super cool place to explore, and I think it will have to be as part of the main quest. We see the same “corruption” from the artifacts earlier on some of the crystals here

Weird 4 legged (with two appendages in between the legs) plant looking creatures with spouts on their backs. Look properly alien. They are in a forest with a couple different kinds of trees, including massive ones like the one in front here and on the right. It looks nice and dense, which always seems to be a problem with procedural generated landscapes, with them usually making very evenly dispersed objects imo.

This screenshot could have leaked and no one would have bought it. We see the frontier landed in a field of amber grasses, with trees in the backgrounds and large mountains beyond that. But the focal point of the image is DINOSAURS. Long neck dinosaur look alikes with little antlers and protrusions on their backs. But the dinosaurs distract from two other things in this image. Number 1 is this flying boney looking bird creature we see top right.

Secondly is that our character has no backpack on. Considering this starfield twitter post says “Your pack provides O2, scrubs CO2, and can even provide a boost”, does not having one mean this planet has a breathable atmosphere and / or our stamina regeneration is dampened?

I love love love this shot. We haven't gotten a proper sand desert in a Bethesda game since daggerfall (not counting new vegas, and that was more rocky desert than sand dunes, and was obsidian). Small clumpings of plants and rocks are around, presumably where there is water? On that note, we haven't seen any bodies of water while on foot this entire trailer which is slightly weird.

Also note this tangle of roots which looks cool and may be a thing to explore?

Then my favorite shot of them all, our character walking past spirit or opportunity on mars! I used to watch the animation of the Mars Exploration Rover launch and landing over and over when I was a kid, so finding them is going to be one of the first things I try to do. Note how different mars here looks from the cydonia images, much less orange and with a gray fog. Again this could be a result of the weather.

Our character is wearing a suit we saw the front of in the character part of the video, and notably their backpack doesn't have any nozzles for a jetpack. We will likely have to choose tradeoffs between things like carry capacity and ability to jetpack.

Sunrise or set on a barren planet or moon, with another body above the sun.

Another rocky moon with a gas giant in the sky that looks alot like jupiter.

Sunrise (or set) on a craggy icy moon. In the sky we see a gas giant that looks like Saturn, or this could be Olivas, or another unknown planet.

A hazy forested mountain range with blue light. We finally see what I think is a river on the left, and if so it looks a little rough. I think this is the same planet as in the story trailer when they say “What’s out there?” It has green, yellow, and red flora, and we see one animal here, another one that looks like a dinosaur:

Amber grassland, occasional trees, tall mountains, and a planet in the sky. My bet is on this being the same planet as the one with dinosaurs, as well as the planet Akila city is on, with the planet in the sky.

A crater on a dry barren moon. We see an outpost of some kind on the horizon on the left:

Another favorite shot, amber grass, sparse trees, high rocky mountains, my guess is the Akila planet again. Reminds me of the elder scrolls 6 teaser as well. We also see the armored animals again here, like we see on a poster in akila, as well as in a tropical biome, possibly hinting at animals on multiple planets. On top of that we also see three other animals:

Armored creature

Weird thing that kinda looks like a low poly horse? Probably bipedal though

Pink insect animal

Seems to be the same creature as this, also on a different world indicating reuse of species.

Sulphur-like biome with rock pillars and a hazy yellow sky.

A tropical biome. Out of all the procedural generation things that we have seen, this one looks the worst to me? It just feels not as dense as you would expect for a tropical area, but maybe that's just this biome, maybe other full jungle biomes will realize the concept art they did for them.

Our ship taking off from a crater of a luna-like moon. The next couple shots keep the ship’s position in the same place, this is likely our animation for leaving the planet and going into space.

Likely the same planet as the blue one with the river as we see the green, yellow, and red foliage again, just not at twilight.

Likely the same desert planet as before, trees are scattered around, not around an oasis.

Likely the same sulphur planet as before.

Likely the same planet that we have seen a good few times that I think is the same planet that has akila city on it. Taking a look at the planet in the sky for both this shot and one in akila:

It looks very similar to me, which on top of the biome similarity makes me think they are the same.

Likely the same craggy icy planet as before.

And finally in the trailer we get a shot of the frontier grav jumping away. Just a little bit about this effect, it feels more science fantasy than other aspects, with the color and effects and all.

But one last thing, the thumbnail for the video:

We see the same striped desert environment as in the concepts, the frontier and vasco, a ship in the sky, which has the contour lines we see so often. But most importantly is the structure(s) in the distance.

Either a hitherto unshown city or this structure we see in the main poster for the game, leaning towards the later. If so, we know the environment that we will see this structure, likely important to the main quest, in.

And that's it, the entirety of the gameplay reveal covered. Only took over 250 additional pages😅

Except it's not as we have a couple more things to go through! Overall thoughts on the presentation were pretty positive, with each segment getting progressively better. The environments and number of systems look massive, and the potential for mods, which is one of my favorite aspects about Bethesda games, seems astronomical.

Pete Hines E3  2022 interview

https://youtu.be/DDZOooMXpoo?t=10900

There was an interview with Pete Hines during the extended part of the Xbox show and he mentioned some things about Starfield.

  • “It's one of those things about a Bethesda game studio game that I always love, …, you cannot pin people down to ‘oh it's about this,’ because it's not, ultimately what those games are are massive sandboxes.”
  • “It's about creating this huge sandbox with over 1000 planets that you can completely explore, but you don't have to.”
  • Reiterates that items are physicalized, i.e. you can go into a weapon shop and pick up and steal everything.
  • You can spend all your time making ships, exploring planets, or following the main quest, it's up to you.
  • Mentions choices in quests and having moments talking about quests with others and having different experiences with them.
  • “Oh yeahIjust ran in shot and stole his ship and all his crew members and took off, oh you can do that, you can do anything”
  • Piracy and stealing ships confirmed.
  • Every ship is customizable to the nth degree
  • Mentions resources for building ships, in the demo we just paid for them but we can also build them ourselves.

Todd Howard E3 2022 IGN Interview

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4j-PV-sSbXs

Todd Howard did an interview with IGN right after xbox’s extended showcase where he elaborated on a couple points.

  • Was very happy nothing leaked this year
  • “We’re pretty aware, you throw that [1000 planets] out near the end, people will go ‘wha what did you just say??’ and then they’ll have a lot of questions on how that works, and we will probably deep dive into that in the future, here’s how we pull it off and how it feels.”
  • Almost sounded like he was about to say soon after saying “in the future” but corrected himself
  • “You go through in your head all the things you would want to do in a game like that, and we try to say yes as much as possible.”
  • “We do alot of procedural generation, but I'd keep in mind that we’ve always done that.”
  • Daggerfall had lots of procedural generation, oblivion’s forests were procedurally generated, lots of Skyrim’s and fallout 4’s quests were procedural.
  • “A planet by itself, in like a game concept, is infinitely big, if you're going to do it in some realistic fashion. So once you’re dealing with scales like that and procedural systems, the difference between one planet that has some variation on it and a hundred planets or a thousand planets, it's actually not that big of a leap once you have good systems working for that.”
  • Which is a good point. If you want to make procedural planets that have a lot of hand crafted locations on them to make it really feel like a planet, you may as well make a ton of them.
  • “We have done more handcrafting for this game, content wise than any game we’ve done.”
  • Over 200,000 lines of dialogue
  • Fallout 4, with the main protagonist with 2 voices taking up a large number of lines, had 150,000. Skyrim had 60,000.
  • “If people just want to do what they are used to in our games, follow a main quest and do the quest lines, you're gonna see what you expect from us, but then you have this whole other part of “i'm just going to wander this planet” and it's going to provide some gameplay and some random content, kind of like a daggerfall would.”
  • “There are alot of ice balls in space, so that was one of our big design considerations for this game. What's fun about an iceball? And it's ok sometimes if ice balls aren't, it is what it is. You wanna go land on that weird planet, check it out and build an outpost and live your life there and watch the sunset because you like the view of the moons there, go for it.”
  • This is exactly what I was feeling about the 1000 planets. Not all of them are interesting, many are barren lifeless rocks. It's space, that authenticity that having all those planets explorable helps to make the game world feel real. While there is plenty of Bethesda exploration of human environments, we also get the realistic space exploration experience of the “magnificent desolation” of untouched worlds.
  • Using their base of tools from previous games, the two things they had started working on were planets and space combat.
  • Your ship has power systems that you have to allocate power to ala FTL, different weapons, engines, shields, and gravity, which is the graviton loop field array which you have to charge if you want to flee, like I thought upon seeing the gameplay footage.
  • Bethesda keeps the pace of space combat slow, look at mech warrior for some inspiration.
  • “It's not just dogfighting, the ship stuff includes: you can dock with other ships, you can disable them, you can dock, you can board it, there are actually some quests that involve that, you can steal the ship, there’s dialogue in space, there’s star stations you can visit, there's smuggling, there's piracy, all the things we would want”
  • Lost of features confirmed here, how in depth who knows, but boarding and ship stealing are highlights for me.
  • Dialogue in space is also a highlight, it makes the space half of the game not just a shooting gallery.
  • “I might get the number wrong, maybe there is 20, and that really is, think of it like a class, it's a start”
  • “There is some dialogue that works into that choice and some other options in the game based on what you picked”
  • It feels like the backgrounds are going to be more on the cyberpunk side of small nodes to it and a few additional options instead of a dragon age origins significant changes based on backgrounds. Given the ~20 backgrounds that's understandable, but here's hoping for a couple nice changes based on backgrounds
  • “I think the chef is kind of funny”
  • Talks about roleplaying systems outside of just fighting, gastronomy, dialogue, crafting, manipulating people, leadership etc.
  • “The way the game starts is pretty much set for everybody”
  • No different starts, most likely the argo employee storyline I outlined earlier
  • “We probably have a few [Step out moments] given the scale of the game, the early ones are the ones we do spend time on to make sure it's impactful. When you finally get to see the surface of a planet or what that planet looks like from space.”
  • Here are the two step out moments Todd mentioned in a previous interview, and as predicted one being in space and one being on a planet.
  • “We have 4 main cities in the game, and new atlantis is easily the biggest city in the game and the biggest we have built”
  • New Atlantis
  • Akila
  • Neon
  • ???
  • Cydonia on Mars?
  • If so, why haven't we heard about it?
  • If Constellation is about collecting nasa artifacts, why haven't they gotten spirit / opportunity yet when they have all those other artifacts? Something doesn't add up about Sol system yet.
  • Paradiso?
  • Crimson fleet base?
  • Space station?
  • Alien town?
  • Endless possibilities
  • 4 Main cities doesn't mean there won't be smaller cities and towns too. Think on the scale of falkreath and morthal in skyrim
  • “It has all the services you would expect, you can work on your ship there, the factions touch on that, but that's also the headquarters for Constellation
  • Describes Constellation as nasa meets indiana jones meets league of extraordinary gentlemen, right as predicted based on the library concept art.
  • Nasa for space exploration and discovery
  • Indiana Jones for hunting for artifacts and history
  • League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for band of adventures stopping evil plots.
  • “Constellation is still exploring and figuring out the mysteries of the universe, and they also look for old earth artifacts, you'll see that in some of the stuff we hint at. They've uncovered some of these artifacts that they don't know their origin, and that's the quest you start on.”
  • The looking for old earth artifacts side questline sounds amazing to me, finding old probes and history.
  • But why? Truly, what happened to Earth? It very much sounds like something happened to the old order.
  • “[Main quest] may be 20% longer, .., if previously we aimed for a 25 hour main quest, this one may be in the 30's, maybe 40 just for the main quest.”
  • “Certainly are going to be doing extra content for this game, and we love our modding community, we think that for our modding community is going to be a dream as there is so much they can do.”
  • Mods will be insane, a first person sci fi rpg sandbox customizable to this degree has not been seen before to my knowledge, can't wait to have my Roci to fly.
  • “We think what we want to do in a game, and how can we make that work the best it can be. And there are some things we don't do intentionally, is that really where we want to spend the time, is that going to be impactful. People have asked can you fly the ship straight down to the planet? No. We decided early in the project that the on surface is one reality and in space is another reality. If you try to really spend a lot of time engineering the inbetween, you're just spending a lot of time that's really just not that important to the player, so lets make sure it's awesome when on the surface and awesome when in space.”
  • Very understandable. Seamless flying in star citizen is amazing, does wonders for immersion, but the amount of effort invested in that would not be worth the cost for Bethesda I have to grudgingly admit. I would have loved to have that feature (maybe in a starfield 2), but the ship building, flying, and fully explorable planets are certainly a better focus for effort.
  • Fallout 5 after elder scrolls 6 are in the queue, and mentions other projects that they look at from time to time.

Gamepass Pc trailer

Very brief but we got two new clips from the PC Game Pass trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_LlyqIunck

Nothing much to say about it but dang, the skyboxes and game as a whole is pretty.

Another Ending

So I think at this point i've crossed the minimum word count to be a novel 😅. And even then I didn’t analyze every little detail and speculate on them. And i'm not even done yet, as i'm sure there will be more info that comes out up till the release. I definitely plan to try and release a completed doc right before the game releases, and if we get any more big events I'll probably release an updated version then. But until then i'll have a little bit of rest haha.

If you actually read all 400+ pages, thank you so much and I hope I made it somewhat interesting. Please let me know any typing errors you noticed or ideas and details that I missed so I can add them into this monstrosity of a google doc. I can't wait until the next info dump (and the game’s actual release ofc), but until then, ill be signing off once again. See ya all during the next big event!

Ps: Todd please hire me part two electric boogaloo lol
