Please excuse me from visiting the Salon[1] with-you this morning, I must get off some important cables, but I should be delighted to have you lunch with me here at the Crillon at 1 oclock,

[1] Salon de la société des artistes français, Paris, 1934; de László exhibited portraits of the Archbishop of Canterbury [6164] and Mrs Morton L Schwartz [4019].
[2] Possibly a reference to the completion of de László’s 1934 portrait of General Pershing [10242], which was painted in the artist’s studio in the Paris home of his friend Armand, 12th duc de Gramont (1879-1962) [11801]. Sittings took place from 4th to 8th June. The General gave his last sitting on 10th June, and the portrait was finished the following day.
