M. BENLLIURE

ABASCAL, 53.-ESTUDIO

Madrid 21 March 1930

Dearest friends,

On my return from Valencia, I have just found your kind letter, which is a slight consolation that I missed you, as it announces me the good news that the International Jury of Barcelona granted the Great Prize to the remarkable portraits you had exhibited [possibly [12400] and [12398]].[1] And it is only fair, as those works are perfectly remarkable, for the technique, elegance and strength that are undeniable characteristics of your beautiful and noble talent.

I therefore heartily congratulate you, and I am joined in my admiration by the English artists

who have just sanctified your glory by choosing you, amongst so many illustrious artists, as President of the Royal Society of British Artists, whose reputation is so high worldwide.

Once again, I much regret I was unable to see you, and that you too could not go as far as Madrid.

Despite my overwhelming work, I am in excellent health, and am even convinced it keeps me morally and physically in the best of shape.

A thousand thanks, dear Madam, for your affectionate letter; soon, I will not fail to salute the Marquis de la Vega-Inclan on your behalf.[2]

With my deeper respect, believe me, my dear friends, yours sincerely and affectionately,

Mariano Benlliure
