Petition in Condemnation of Legacy Preference Admissions at Georgetown University

We invite all students, clubs, alumni, faculty, and affiliates to sign below and call on Georgetown University to end the unfair advantage it gives to legacy applicants who are descendants of faculty, administrative staff, or alumni, a policy that directly hurts campus diversity.

In light of the Supreme Court's recent decision to ban race-conscious admissions, we, the Georgetown community, are deeply concerned with the inevitable impact on diversity and inclusion in admissions and on campus. While President DeGioia released a commendable statement in opposition to the ruling, we are worried by the findings in Georgetown’s own report, which project a decrease in enrollment of students from underrepresented groups. According to page 3 of this report, universities like Georgetown will need to “[eliminate] admissions preferences for legacy students” if they wish to maintain current levels of diversity.

With this knowledge, we call for an end to the unfair advantage given to applicants with legacy status, a move that would increase diversity without negatively affecting donation rates, as supported by outcomes at peer institutions.

It is essential that both our university and the workforce to which it contributes adequately reflect real-world demographics. Diversity means that broader perspectives are brought to the table, creating an environment where all concerns can be addressed. However, the preference given to applications with legacy status in Georgetown’s admissions process harms diversity. Nearly 1 in 10 Georgetown students have legacy status. These applicants, who are disproportionately more white and wealthy than their peers, enjoy an admissions rate more than double that of non-legacy applicants. In recent admission cycles, Georgetown has seen an admirable increase in diversity among accepted students. Ending legacy preference will help ensure that we continue to increase diversity despite the recent Supreme Court decision, a goal we know is shared by students, alumni, and administration.

In recent years, members of the administration have argued that the continuation of legacy status is necessary because it incentivizes donations from alumni, which, in turn, supports financial aid programs. While we understand this perspective, many private universities have not considered legacy status for several years and yet have not seen a decrease in alumni donations. MIT and Johns Hopkins University are great examples, doing away with their legacy admissions policy in 2006 and 2014, respectively. In the years since, Johns Hopkins has maintained the same donation rate, and MIT’s endowment has continued to grow rapidly, receiving its highest-ever donation amount in 2021 while maintaining the 6th highest endowment in the country. At the same time, both universities saw an increase in diversity, with a ten percentage point increase in students of color enrolled at Johns Hopkins.

As supported by both Georgetown’s own research and our peer institutions’ financial reports, ending legacy preference is an obvious first step if we as a university want to truly embody our Jesuit value of Community in Diversity.

Note: This petition explicitly advocates for the removal of preferential legacy status from descendants of alumni, faculty, and administrative staff. We continue to support preferential admission consideration for descendants of the GU272 —the enslaved people owned by the Maryland Province of Jesuits—as a form of reconciliation.

We, the undersigned organizations, stand against Georgetown University’s use of legacy preference in the admissions process. We request that the University remove any advantages given to applicants with legacy status and any application questions that would help indicate legacy status.
