Why Do I Teach?

by Kristy Hernandez

Teaching is the profession that allows all other professions, trades, and society as a whole, to prosper.  Without teachers, how would we learn to do the things we all know how to do?

So, why do I teach?

That’s easy... I teach because someone once taught me.

I teach because I have been chosen as one of the lucky ones to make a difference in the lives of children.

I teach to help, encourage, and inspire other teachers.

I teach because it is fun and it makes me happy!

I teach because the long hours and sleepless nights are worth it when one student draws me a picture, writes me a note, gives me a hug, or brings me a souvenir from their vacation.

I teach to see the wonder and excitement of children when they learn something new or can finally read an entire book all by themselves!

I teach because I’m able to laugh all the time…you should hear the funny things 1st graders say!

I teach because I get to be part of a school community, filled with amazing people, that I am privileged to work with, and learn from, each day.

I teach because it is the best and most rewarding job of all.  I am so grateful and honored to have been gifted with the opportunity to become a teacher.

Even on the hard days, I know that I did something good in the world to help make someone’s life a little bit better.
