The children will demonstrate that water flows down a slope.

When does water moves faster and when it moves slower?

  1. Help the children identify characteristics of sand and soil that makes up Earth’s surface.
  2. Display Flip Chart page 38 and read aloud.
  3. Have the children identify materials. (Eyedropper, tray with wax paper, water)
  4. Ask the children to identify the objects.
  5. I will tell the children that we will learn how water moves.
  6. Have the children place X on the appropriate pictures.
  7. The teacher will model how to drip water on the paper using the eyedropper.
  8. Ask: Where will it go? Does it move faster or slower than when we held the tray like a slide?
  9. the teacher will guide the children in describing the results.
  10. Help the children understand that as water moves downhill, the steeper the slope of the paper, the faster the water moves.
  11. ASk: Where did the water move both times? How did you hold the paper to make the water move faster? Do you think the water on flat paper would flow faster or slower than when we held the paper straight up down?
  12. Discuss results.
  13. Have the children work together to create models of steep mountains, gentle hills, and flat plains.
  14. Have the children answer the following questions: What can you learn about how water moves? When does water moves fast? What happens to water that falls on the flat plains? Why? (It doesn’t move because it is flat)
