Jesu dulcis memoria........ Tomás Luis de Victoria (ca. 1548-1611)

text attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (c. 1090-1153)

Publisher information – public domain

Jesu, dulcis memoria,

Dans vera cordis gaudia:

Sed super mel et omnia

Ejus dulcis praesentia.

Jesus, how sweet the very thought,

Giving true joy to the heart:

But above honey and all else

Is his sweet presence.

About the piece:

“This “Jubilus on the name of Jesus” is generally ascribed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, but the real author appears to be an anonymous Cistercian who lived at the close of the 12th Century.  Jesu, dulcis memoria is the Vesper hymn for the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus which is celebrated on the Sunday between the feast of the Circumcision (Jan. 1) and Epiphany (Jan. 6), or on Jan. 2 if there is no such Sunday.” –excerpted from Translations and Annotations of Choral Repertoire, vol. 1: Sacred Latin Texts, by Ron Jeffers

Liturgical text

text from Psalm 100 / Lesser doxology

Danket ihm.lobet seinen Namen.

Amen.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth!

Serve the Lord with gladness;

Come before his presence with rejoicing!

Know that the Lord is God.

He has made us, and not we ourselves,

To be his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving

And into his courts with praise.

Give thanks to him; praise his name!

For the Lord is kind,

And his mercy is everlasting,

And his truth endures for ever and ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

And also to the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning, is now and always,

World without end. Amen.

Publisher information – Oxford University Press, 2004, ISBN 9780193867963

Infant Holy, Infant lowly, For his bed a cattle stall;

Oxen lowing, little knowing Christ the Babe is Lord of all.

Swiftly winging angels singing, Nowells ringing, tidings bringing:

Christ the Babe is Lord of all.  Christ the Babe is Lord of all.

Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping Vigil till the morning new.

Saw the glory, heard the story, Tidings of a gospel true.

Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, Praises voicing, greet the morrow:

Christ the Babe was born for you.  Christ the Babe was born for you.

Caroling, Caroling.................................... Alfred Burt (1920-1954)

text by Wihla Hutson (1901-2002)

Publisher information – Shawnee Press, Inc. – Alfred Burt Carols, set 1, song 1

Caroling, caroling, now we go; Christmas bells are ringing!

Caroling, caroling, thru the snow; Christmas bells are ringing!

Joyous voices sweet and clear, Sing the sad of heart to cheer.

Ding, dong, ding, dong, Christmas bells are ringing!

Caroling, caroling, thru the town; Christmas bells are ringing!

Caroling, caroling, up and down; Christmas bells are ringing!

Mark ye well the song we sing, Gladsome tidings now we bring.

Ding, dong, ding, dong, Christmas bells are ringing!

Caroling, caroling, near and far; Christmas bells are ringing!

Following, following, yonder star; Christmas bells are ringing!

Sing we all this happy morn, “Lo, the King of heav’n is born!”

Ding, dong, ding, dong, Christmas bells are ringing!

“In 1922, Reverend Bates G. Burt began the ritual of sending a newly composed carol to friends. His son, Alfred, perpetuated the observance in 1941 until his death in 1954. The collection, known to choirs across the globe as the Alfred Burt Carols, resulted in some beloved favorites such as The Star Carol, and Caroling, Caroling.”  -- P. Steenblik, dissertation
