Why a Chromebook? Why not? Online tools for common tasks.

There are millions of web resources you can access on any web-based device, but here are a few suggestions for web apps that you can find in the Google Chrome Web Store or that simply work directly in your browser without the need of an app.  These work in the Chrome browser, on a desktop or laptop, and of course they work on Chromebooks and Chromeboxes.

Finally found (after more than a year) where this started, albeit with just a few entries. Thanks to Kellie Ady et al at the Cherry Creek School District in Denver. I’ve been adding ever since.

Thank you for looking through this collection. Feel free to send suggestions to vogelp@gmail.com. I have an aversion to extensions and prefer to populate this list with pure web-based applications. My list is also slanted to the secondary level as I am a teacher of grade 11 and 12 Information and Communications Technology and of Physics 12.

It is an honour to have had so many people look at this list over the past several years. Even as I write this comment (October 26 2015 at 12:46 PDT) there are fifteen people viewing the Google Doc.

Chrome platforms in use in my school:

  • Samsung Series 5-500: the original Chromebook platform sold to schools in March 2011
  • Samsung X303, the units that look a little like MacBook Airs
  • Acer C720
  • Acer C720p, the touchscreen white units (my favourite)
  • Acer C740
  • Acer CX1 Chromeboxes, as of September 2015, to replace a traditional Windows lab
  • Miscellaneous Acer, Asus, Lenovo units in testing for possible replacement use.
  • Acer Chromebook 14 for Work (amazing high-end i5-powered unit).
  • Acer Chromebook R11 Flip.
  • Various HP and Lenovo units.

Chromebook carts: we use the CloudCraft carts. Google gave us the initial one as a freebie with our first Chromebook order.
