A very brief

History of Osgiliath

S.A.        3320        Foundation of the town as capital of Gondor. Thrones of Isildur and Anarion stood side by side in the Great Hall.

3429        Anarion defended Osgiliath against attack from Sauron.

T.A.        1437        Burning of Osgiliath during the kin-strife. Tower of the Dome of Osgiliath was destroyed. Palantir was lost in the waters.

1636        The Great Plague devastates Gondor. Most of the population of Osgiliath died or fled into Ithilien.

1640        Only very few of the refugees were willing to return to Osgiliath. The King’s house was moved to Minas Anor. Osgiliath now partly deserted began to fall into ruins.

2475        Orcs from Mordor swept across Ithilien and take Osgiliath. Boromir I. defeated them and regained Ithilien. Osgiliath was finally ruin and the great stone-bridge was broken.

3018 Sauron started open war on Gondor, attacked Osgiliath and took the part east of the river. The last bridge was destroyed.

Conclusions for MCME map:

At the server time (T.A. 3001) the major structures (Dome and great stone-bridge) were in ruins for more than 1500 years. Most areas were deserted for almost the same amount of time. There has been no fighting in Osgiliath for more than 500 years. The town has been fully deserted and laid in ruins for the same amount of time. But because of the last bridge the place was still an important connection to Ithilien where many people lived until Sauron returned openly to Mordor in T.A. 2951.

  • Most parts of the town should be overgrown with a lot of plants: grass, bushes, trees…
  • There should be an intact bridge over River Anduin and a maintained road from east to west gate as (Ithilien is still under control of Gondor)
  • There should be some well maintained defensive structures to protect the bridge and barracks as it’s obviously a military key location. These structures should be made of stone, they were probably build 500 years ago after the last attack.
  • All the wooden defensive structures should be removed (no fighting for more than 500 years).
