Editing Profiles: My most recent call to edit profiles resulted in way too few responses! If you haven’t done it yet, please do the following:

1. Log into http://ncknows.org/admin with train1 and pw: ncknows

2. follow these instructions: http://ncknows.org/nclh.html

Advisory Board Report: I’ve attached two versions of the edited Advisory Board report. I hope this gives you a bit of a better idea of where we’ve come from and what we hope to achieve in the next year.

Listserv Migration: Many of you have already received notice that I am migrating the listserv to Google Groups. This is in response to folks who mysteriously have not received emails from the previous list. My hope is that GGroups will make it easier for all of us to stay in touch. My goal is to share next month’s report through Google Groups.

NC LIVE urls= Confusing! Here are two videos that will (hopefully) make sense of how to handle NC LIVE urls in a cooperative setting.

Sending Permanent Links to libraries who use NC LIVE’s authentication:

Transcripts of the Month

We have three transcripts this month and the first two are about ebooks. Dre Orphanides from NCSU deftly handles this complex question about returning ebooks in Adobe Digital Editions. His conversational tone goes a long way, I think, to helping ease the patron’s frustrations. Thanks Dre!

15:42 ncsu-ao@libraryh3lp.com Do you have the Adobe Digital Editions software? I seem to recall that you have to return them from within the software.

15:42 ncsu-ao@libraryh3lp.com Then you should be able to download them again as a new checkout

Years from now we’ll look back at 2013 as the wild and crazy days of ebooks! There is a dizzying array of devices and databases and each one requires learning a new procedure. In the meantime, here is an expert answer about downloading ebooks at CML from Leanda Gahegan (who works at CML!) As you can see, CML offers both classes and one on one help with ebooks. Every profile in NCknows has links to audio/ebook help at the bottom but in the case of CML, their help page (http://www.cmlibrary.org/about_us/info.asp?id=50) is rather thorough- consider suggesting it to patrons. It also has a link to classes/help.  (Many thanks to Nathan Cook, Jenifer Daniels, Janet Goretti, Linda Katzman, Kristi Madron & John Peitzman who are part of the CMLibrary “quick team” to handle these resources).

12:01 cml-lgahegan@libraryh3lp.com goodbye.

And here’s a fascinating one. We had a rash of kids misusing the service in May so when I saw this I suspected the worst. But as it progressed I realized, well, perhaps this I’m a bit quick to interpret perfectly normal rambling patron behavior as inappropriate. Behavior that seems inappropriate to my jaded eyes turned out to be not that bad and even perfectly normal considering the bizarre nature of virtual reference. Kudos to Andrea Putnam from Fayetteville State for being patient, wisely using NC LIVE’s Kidsearch, and restoring my faith in the essential goodness of all patrons!
