My dear de Laszlo
I neglected to answer at once about the sketches you were kind enough to offer me I need hardly say I shall be delighted to have them and thank you very much for your

kindness.[1] You are like the lady in the opening of the Arabian Nights who made every King’s [son?] pay duty to her. Not only all the crowned heads of Europe and beyond the seas (but there are a diminishing number) but all the great potentates of the world come to sit in homage to your art.
Yours Sincerely
Sheffield

[1] De László made a number of preparatory works and studies [112258][7287][2761][2986] for a three-quarter length portrait of Lord Sheffield painted in 1904 [12808]. De László also kept what is likely a copy of the official portrait, cut down and with a plain background [2759]. He painted Lord Sheffield again in 1919 in gratitude for all his support during his internment [2065].
